LESSON PLANNING TEMPLATE

Name __Jorie Pinsof___ Grade level ___Kindergarten_ Observation: 3

general goals of LESSON long term: Students understand math concepts and station work. short term: Students are actively engaged in each station and understand symmetry. specific goals of lesson long term: Students will be able to work independently and grasp the key math concepts. short term: Students understand and can define symmetry.

1. title of Research Lesson: ________Symmetry__________________ 2. standards addressed: Danielson framework: 3a directions and procedures

CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.B.4 Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/corners) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length). CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.B.5 Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components (e.g., sticks and clay balls) and drawing shapes. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.5 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail.
3. background of the LESSON:
- The children have used scissors and cut before - Have worked in groups - Have all painted

Introduce symmetry

Introduce symmetry Does anyone know what it is? - when you fold something in half or split it down the middle, its the same on both sides - show examples - ask them to give other examples - humans - demonstrate that the colors make it symmetrical too - and patterns

Worksheets Paint There will be four stations Crayons 1) cutting Poster - at this station there are Stickers pictures folded in half. I Printed pictures want you to cut around Pattern blocks the line and see what happens. - Can you guess? - Make you keep it folded until after you cut it out - Then unfold it and color it in! 2) Color by number at this station youre going to color the matching numbers the same.

6. evaluation:

(How will you know whether or not you have achieved your short-term specific goals? What did the childrens responses to this lesson tell you about whether your goals were met?

Informally assess the children based on their comprehension of symmetry -how they manage the activities and follow instructions Asses children on their ability to follow directions

7. post-lesson reflection:

What would you change about this lesson and why would those changes improve it?

I needed more time. I didnt allot myself enough time to complete all of the stations, which created a rushed lesson. I could have also focused more on my placement in the class. I was far away from many of the students by starting at the carpet activity. A reoccurring skill that I need to work on is talking at the kindergarten level, and using their words. I used phrases like handle yourself, but could have gone deeper by explaining what I mean by that.

How did your organization and materials affect the success of the lesson?

Having everything prepared and ready for the kids helped them succeed in the stations. The line down the middle helps the students visualize half of the paper, and gave them a place to fold, which can be tricky for kids at this age. In the cutting station, I pre-folded all of the paper to make sure that all the children could get started right away, and would be guaranteed a perfect half. I thought about the little details that went in to the stations, and I think with more time it would have been better represented.

What were some challenges with this lesson? What surprised you?

Time was the biggest challenge. Another big challenge was managing the whole class while they are all working on different things at the same time. Having so much going on was very difficult to control. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the students caught on to

the idea of symmetry having never learned it before. For the most part, all of the students worked hard and did what I expected them to do.

additional comments?

Although this lesson didnt go exactly as I planned, I learned a lot from it. There was a lot of preparation work and time spent thinking through little details. I want to try another station activity like this again in the future, and I will know for next time that I will have to manage my time better.
