Plan of Study for General Engineering concentration in Multidisciplinary Engineering Credits

First year Engineering Program 29-36 Students are very strongly advised to take a CAD course such as CGT 163 or 164 during their first year in engineering. A CAD course is required for this concentration. Required sophomore mathematics : Multivariate calculus (MA 261), and linear algebra & differential equations, MA 262 or (MA 265 & 266), or equivalent 8-10 Sophomore Science selective. One of the following: Phys 241, Phys 261, Biol 121, Biol 230, organic chemistry or equivalent. 3-4 If MA 165 and 166 and 262 are taken, science selectives (in First Year Engineering program and this science selective) must add to at least 7 credits, or an area course must be math or science. Statistics selective. One of the following: IDE 495*, IE 230, IE 330, ChE 320, ECE 302, STAT 350, STAT 511 or equivalent. The engineering courses count towards the required 47 credits in engineering. Statistics courses count towards Area requirements. (3 counted elsewhere) * IDE 495 is recommended as normal course. Communications selective. One of the following: Com 114*, Com 315, Com 320, Com 325 or equivalent. These courses can count towards the first year program, towards the general education program, or towards the Area requirements. (3 counted elsewhere) * Com 114 during the first year program is recommended as normal course. General Education: Follow Engineerings General Education Program requirements. Strongly recommend Econ 251 & 252, and Spanish 18 Engineering: Minimum 47 credits at 200+ levels, of which at least 18 credits are at 300 + levels, of which at least 6 credits must be at the 400+ level. Maximum number of credits in any one engineering discipline is 24. Note: It is the students responsibility to see that all prerequisites are met. Required Engineering Core: (Can substitute or transfer equivalent courses except for IDE 301 and major design experience courses, which must be taken at Purdue-West Lafayette.) Topic: Electrical circuits Statics and Dynamics* Example Courses: Credits ECE 201 or equivalent 3 (ME 270 + ME 274), A&AE 203, (CE 297 + 298) or equivalent 3 or 6 Fluid mechanics * ME 309 (1 cr. counts as lab), CE 340, A&AE 333 & 333L (1 cr. Counts as lab), ChE 377 (1 cr is lab) or equivalent 3 Thermodynamics ME 200, ABE 210, ChE 211, MSE 350 or equivalent 3 Engineering Economics IE 343 or equivalent 3 Capstone design EPICS (senior design option) or IDE 485 3 Professional Preparation IDE 301 1 Typical Engineering Core total credits 19-22 *Most fluids courses require a statics/dynamics prerequisite. The recommended sequences are: CE 297+CE 298+CE 340+CE 343(lab) 9 cr core + 1 cr lab

ME 270 + ME 274 + ME 309 9 cr core + 1 cr lab A&AE 203 + A&AE 333 + A&AE 333L 6 cr core + 1 cr lab Students who plan to earn a minor in mechanical engineering should take the ME sequence. Some mixing of courses is allowed because courses are considered to be equivalent (for example, ME 270 + CE 298 +CE 340 + CE 343), but students should discuss other sequences with an advisor first. Engineering Selectives: Do parts a, b, and c. a. Three additional credits of engineering design. Must be approved by Dept. Engineering Education. Example courses: ABE 330, ABE 435, A&AE 251, CE 456, CE 470, IE 386, ME 263(CODO from ME only), ME 413, or EPICS (300 level or above). [A total of 6 credits of EPICS is required if EPICS is used as both the engineering design selective and the major design experience course.] Should be completed before taking major design experience course(s). 3 b. Three credits of hands-on (not computer) laboratory. At least 2 credits must be in engineering (Example courses: A&AE 204L, A&AE 333L, A&AE 352L, A&AE 364L, BME 206, ECE 207, ECE 208, ECE 323, CE 343, CE 344, and the following count for 1 credit each: ABE 305, ECE 270, CE 352, CE 353, ChE 377, ChE 378, ME 309, MSE 235, MSE 335, MSE 367, NUCL 205). One credit of hands-on lab (not computer) may be in other disciplines (e.g., A&D, Science, THTR) but courses cannot be one of the required courses in the First Year Engineering Program. (Note: Since CHEM 116 is a selective for students who entered Purdue in August 2006 and later, it satisfies the requirement of one credit of lab, but the credit cannot be double counted.) Only the credits assigned to lab can be included in this category. 1 cr lab (may be counted elsewhere) + 2 engr lab Note: The lecture credits of engineering courses with 1 or 2 credits of lab can be included in engineering electives, and the lecture credit for courses in other disciplines can be included in Area except for CHEM 116 (for students entering Purdue August 2006 and later) where all 4 credits are included in the First Year Engineering Program. c. Engineering course in materials or strength of materials. Example courses: MSE 230, ABE 305, A&AE 204, CE 231 CE 333, ChE 330, NUCL 273, or ME 323(CODO from ME only) 3 Total credits engineering selectives: 8 engr + 1 cr lab (may be engr) Engineering area: In selecting engineering area electives and selectives remember that of the 47 credits of engineering, 18 credits must be at 300 + levels, of which at least 6 credits must be at the 400+ level. Engineering area: Selective Courses: 1. One of these beginning courses: ABE 210, BME 201, BME 204, BME 205, BME 295 (BME classes may be available to CODO only), CE 203 (4), CE 220, CHE 205, IE 370, ME 263 (CODO only cannot double count as design selective), MSE 240, NUCL 200 or other beginning engineering courses not in MDE core and approved by ENE. 3-4 2. A follow-up to core courses: For example: ABE 435, A&AE 334, A&AE 372, BME 304 (may be available to CODO only), CE 270, CE 303, ChE 378, ECE 202, ECE 321, IE 330, ME 300, ME 315, MSE 382, or other follow-up courses approved by ENE. The following courses can be used but cannot also be used for the selective requirement for a materials or strength of materials course: ABE 305, A&AE 204, CE 231, NUCL 273 3 3. One additional advanced (300 + level) courses such as: ABE 301, ABE 305, ABE 320, ABE 325, ABE 450, CE 303, CE 321, CE 331, CE 350, CE 371, CE 403, ChE 306, ECE 301, ECE 311, IE 332, IE 336, IE 577, MSE 370, NUCL 300, or other advanced course approved by ENE. Other 300 level engineering courses listed as selectives or as follow-up to core can be used (but cannot be double-counted). 3

9-10 Engineering area: Elective Courses: These courses are chosen to meet the students educational objectives. Consider either MSE 230 or NUCL 273 not taken as selective, additional design courses, and undergraduate research. Engineering course taken as Statistics Selective counts as engineering area course, but is not double-counted for graduation. 6-10 Total Engineering Area Courses Total minimum required Engineering credits @ 200+ level 16-20 47

Area: Required selective in area: CAD Course such as: CGT 110, 163, 164; THTR 554. Can be part of first year engineering program credits not doubled counted for graduation. 3 or 2 Area: Elective Courses in area: Statistics course taken as Statistics Selective counts as area course. Consider ENGL 421, COM 325, MA 303 (if take MA 262), MGMT 200, MGMT 201, OBHR 300, additional engineering courses, and other courses to meet educational objectives. There is no minimum in the Area since more than 47 credits of engineering courses may be taken. Typically 9-18 Minimum required for graduation 124
