, about 15-20 students Age/Population: ESL Canadians, young adults (18-early 20s) from various cultural/L1 backgrounds Materials: video clips (Modern Family, season 1 episode 8, Great Expectations) Language Focus: The purpose of the activity is for students to understand requests and problems in communication with implied meanings. Skills/Objectives: The micro-skills (from CLB 6 listening competencies) targeted are: Identify specific factual details, main intent, main ideas, and implied meanings. Identify language functions (requests and problems in reception and communication) Identify situation and relationship between speakers. Identify mood, attitude and emotional states from tone and intonation. Predict what will happen next in a story. Identify some common idiomatic expressions.

Lesson Sequence: Stage Warm-up Tasks/Procedures Think about a time you really wanted something but knew your parents would say no. How did you bring it up? How did you try to convince them? Think about your tone of voice. Practice dialogue with a partner. Pre-view some key vocabulary (PJ party, commitment, insult, permission) Go over idiomatic expressions. Watch 30second clip first request to go to party T asks comprehension questions (What does she want to do? How did she ask? Did she get permission?) Watch 1minute clip second request to go to party T pauses video twice, and asks comprehension questions (How does she feel? Why? Did she get permission?) T hands out sentence strips, in pairs Ss identify speaker and put the sentences in order Watch clips again and confirm order of sentence strips, listen for implied meanings Ss work in small groups and reformulate scene.
