CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.2a Recognize and produce rhyming words. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.5 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail. Objectives: Students will be able to build their phonemic awareness with identify rhyming words from the book that is being read and pair their own pair of rhyming words to use on the matching game. Materials: Clipboard, pencil, rhyming chart, index cards, and Maxi, The hero by Debra and Sal Barracca. Procedures: 1.Students will be given a rhyming chart (attached)- Students will have to write down the pairs of rhyming words that are embedded within the pages of the book that the teacher is reading out loud. 2. Students will be called one by one to come sit on the rug. They will be given the rhyming chart to write on and asked to bring a clipboard and pencil. 3. Present the book by talking about the cover and the author 4. Teacher will read the first page (included in the back) and after reading it students will be asked to identify the rhyming words (example included) (form of assessment) *This will be done for every page of the book. 5. After reading the book, students will be asked to go back to their desks and write down rhyming words in pairs 6. The words they write down will then be written individually on an index card. 7. They will be paired up and ask to mix the cards up and place them faced down. 8. Once paired up each student, in his or her pair, will play the matching game. They will pick one card and find the other card with the matching rhyming word. (Form of assessment) Assessment:

Students will identify the words in the pages and write down on the rhyming chart Students will write their own rhyming words to put on index cards Students will play the matching game and match rhyming words from the index cards. Management Issues/transitions: Students will be called to the rug one by one. Having them write down the rhyming words, helps them remain concentrated, they are the maximum four letter words and can be difficult for some students but with the help of the teacher, it is possible Differentiation: When students get paired up, the teacher will pair them up depending on their level of reading.
