Understanding Computers in a Changing Society ISBN13: 978-133-19103-2 Cengage Learning Deborah Morley Middle/High School Computers The textbook progresses from the intro which details the basics of hardware and software and moves through to the topics of all computer related material, ending with current technology. Chapter topics include Internet and Security, Privacy, Ethics & Intellectual Property, and Emerging Technology. The text is straight forward and written in a down to earth style. The concepts are clearly explained without the use of overly technical terminology. Each chapter has Ask the Expert boxes that feature a question about a computer concept, trend, etc. There are no obvious callouts for these special adaptations. Lessons will have to be modified on a as needed basis.

Throughout the book there are links to additional information, online videos and podcasts. Each chapter also includes Trend Inside the Industry, Technology and You, and How It Works sections for students to learn more and relate the information to their everyday lives. Complex concepts are explained in an understandable manner with realistic examples from everyday life.

The chapters have a list of learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter. The summary of each chapter highlights where these objectives have been discussed. Key terms are bold faced and defined. Objectives of application are made clear throughout the book with all the current examples which makes them easy to apply. Each chapter has a self quiz made of different matching, multiple choice and short answer questions. There are also 2 class discussion questions. In addition to these activities, there are projects for each chapter that can lead to a group presentation, developing an opinion, independent research or hands on application. The standards for computer class would most likely align with the ITSE (International Society for Technology in Education) Performance Indicators along with the Common Core Standards for Literacy in Technical Subjects. The content and additional projects and resources available in this text meet these standards.
