Project Name: Recycling Rangers

Purpose of the Lesson:

The purpose of this lesson is to develop and reinforce 21st century skills within the framework of a project designed to increase environmental awareness.

Students will be utilizing the research process in a multi-part lesson to create evidence that they are able to manipulate factual information to develop conceptual knowledge.

Essential Idea/Question Driving the Project:

Why is recycling important and how does it keep the Earth clean and prote cted for future generations?

Standard for this Lesson:

Expectation o The student will develop and apply knowledge and skills gained from an environmental issue investigation to an action project which protects and sustains the environment Topic for this Lesson: Environmental Science Indicator for this Lesson: o Indicator 6.4.1 Identify an environmental issue and formulate related research questions Methods of gathering information may include o Writing letters o Performing a literature search o Using the internet o Interviewing experts o Indicator 6.4.3 Interpret the findings to draw conclusions and make recommendations to help resolve the issue o Indicator 6.4.4 Apply the conclusions to develop and implement an action project Methods of implementation may include o Physical action o Persuasion o Consume action o Political action

INSTRUCTIONAL DECISION-MAKING
(What knowledge of my students influences my instructional decision in this lesson? How will my instruction remove barriers to learning and/or build on students strengt hs?)

Any background knowledge that the students may have will influence the depth of their KWL chart. By using the chart

ANALYSIS AND REFLECTION

(What does the data from the formative assessment indicate about student learning? To what extent did students reach the desired result? What insights did you develop about teaching? How can you improve your professional skills?)

Students must be able to properly understand the process of recycling. We can see their understanding in the activities that are included in the lesson. Doing their own research shows initiative and effort. The sort mania shows they understand the basic concepts of what is recycled. Finally, when they present their findings we should be able to see that they have a full grasp on the concepts. I learned that I have a lot to learn about creating a lesson plan. As a group we found that the when we find the standards first, it is much easier to mold a creative lessons around the curriculum. To improve my professional skills, I simply need more exposure to the curriculum and creating lesson plans. I really enjoyed working in a group to create the lesson.
