ART Course Syllabus 2012-2013

Course Overview This course is designed to introduce you, the student, to basic art concepts, materials, and methods of producing art to help you express your artistic talents. The elements of art (line, value, space, form, color, texture, and shape) will be addressed along with the principles of design (rhythm, movement, emphasis, balance, variety, unity, and harmony). Prerequisites There are no prerequisites for this course. Course Content Drawing Unit: sketchbook, positive/negative collage, line control techniques, still life drawing, shading techniques, cup drawing, clothesline drawing. Color Unit: colorwheel, value scales, monochromatic painting. 3D work: wire sculpture, basket, kite Course Materials Furnished by school Course Policies

Absences and Makeup Work Regular attendance and active participation are fundamental requirements. Excessive absences, late arrivals or early departures will result in a significantly lower grade. If you must be absent (excused) it is your responsibility to check with the teacher to determine what you have missed. Late work may be turned in up to, but no later than, four days after the due date and will receive a 10% deduction towards your grade each day it is late. (If you turn a project in four days after it is due, you will receive a 40% deduction from your project grade). You will receive you full credit grade for work turned in at the time it is requested in class. If you have an excused absence on the date an assignment is due, it can be turned in for full credit on the date of your return. Class Participation: Please remember this class is participation based. It is imperative that you attend class regularly and participate, to complete work fully and on time. Otherwise, your grade will suffer due to

an excessive amount of absences, or lack of involvement.

Classroom Rules/ Expectations Be gently with the art supplies and equipment. Clean your work area and equipment. Return supplies to the cupboards. Please respect yourself and others in the class. Use proper language when expressing yourself to the class and in conversation. Arrive on time. Listen attentively when project instructions are given. Homework Policy: All artwork must be done in class, under the supervision of the art teacher. I will not accept work that I have not seen you do in class. Exception: Students may work in their sketchbook outside of class.

Grading Policy The following components make up your project and semester grade:
Creativity using your talent and imagination to add to the assignment. Craftsmanship using care, accuracy and neatness on all projects. Class participation class participation is a vital component to your success in art class. All projects must be worked on and completed in class under the supervision of the teacher. Following instructions on all projects.

Grade Distribution A The student who consistently produces strong projects that demonstrate a high level of technical ability and/or progress in learning techniques. The student will also be actively involved in class discussions and demonstrate a clear understanding of topics covered in the course. B The student who does very good and occasionally outstanding work on assignments. Projects must be well executed and completed on time. Class involvement must be strong. C - The student whose projects and class participation are adequate but do not represent strong effort or improvement. Projects must be completed on time. D The student does not adequately demonstrate an understanding of the material covered in the course and shows little effort in the project and technical phases of assignments. Attendance and class participation are inadequate, and some projects are late or incomplete. F The student who misses class often, turns assignments in late, shows little effort on projects and demonstrates little progress over the course of the semester. Types of Assessments

Projects will be grading using the grading rubric noted above. There will be quizzes given after each connecting project, to assess your knowledge of art vocabulary and processes learned in class. There will be a Final Exam, at the end of the semester, which will consist of all the quizzes combined. Progress Reports Per YPS district schedule Powerschool updated regularly
