This application note is to be used to assist machinery builders in selecting the correct Dynamic Braking module to be used in their safety application. The Bonitron M3500 Dynamic Brake is selected according to the electrical characteristics of the MPL-A, MPL-B, F, H, N, Y, 1326AB, and 1326AS series Rockwell Automation servo motors. This application note should be used in conjunction with the Light Curtain and Emergency Stop Control SERCOS drives with Bonitron Dynamic Brake Module Kinetix6000, 1394 Digital, Ultra3000 application note.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Bonitron is a Rockwell Automation Encompass Partner that manufactures the M3500 Dynamic Braking module with a built in timer, power contactor, and DB resistors. The M3500 is used in safety applications that require frequent interlocking of the motor, such as in a light curtain application. The internal timer is preset configurable at initial commissioning. Bonitron offers five dynamic brake sizes, which must be selected according to which servo motor is being used. The following tables provide optimum motor resistance values for the MPL-A, MPL-B, F, H, N, Y, 1326AB, and 1326AS series servo motors and the corresponding Bonitron Dynamic Brake resistance values. It also includes the motor shaft rotations and approximate stopping times using the Bonitron Dynamic Brake for the condition where load inertia = 1x motor inertia. The initial velocity is from rated motor velocity. Other load inertias and velocities will produce different number of shaft rotations and time to stop rotating. The curves which follow in the Appendices show a profile of the motor velocity, DB resistor current, and shaft torque. The scaling of the graphs on the Y Axis has been normalized. This means that a current scale of 1 = I motor rated rms, a velocity scale of 1 = 1000 rpm, and a torque scale of 1 = rated torque at stall. The plots are shown using the Bonitron DB Braking Units.
