Student Standards Being Taught: 1. ELA(1) 13. Listen for meaning in conversations and discussions, including looking at the speaker without interrupting. 2. ELA(1) 4. Read with comprehension a variety of first-grade narrative and informational texts, including recalling information and retelling a story with beginning, middle, and end. 3. ELA2010(K) 23. Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding. 4. TC2(K-2) 10. Design original works using digital tools.

II. Objectives: After the lesson, students will understand the different elements of a story. Students will create a retelling rope with all of the elements of a story. Students will apply this knowledge through creating their own story on an iPad using the book creator app. The students will be able to discuss the different elements of a story (Setting, Characters, Problem, Beginning, Middle, End, and Solution). Students will create a retelling rope. The students will create their own story with all of the elements on the book creator app. Introductory Activities: 1. The teacher will use the story retelling chart to discuss in detail what the parts of a story consist of. i. Setting- The time and place ii. Characters- the people or animals who act out the story iii. Problem- the struggle the character is having iv. Happenings- the events, beginning, middle, end v. Solution- how the story was tied up 2. The teacher will show the video discussing the different elements of a story.

Developmental Activities: 1. The teacher will hand out materials to create the retelling rope 2. The pictures found on the retelling chart and the ones handed to children will be the same. Together the teacher and students will create a retelling rope while referencing the chart. Culminating Activities: 1. Students will work in group and will be given a story retelling worksheet. 2. Groups will write down the elements of their own original story.

3. When students have finished preparing all of the elements of their story, they will use the app Book Creator to complete their story.

Assessing Student Learning: 1. After completing their story they will present the story to the class. 2. We will go through the elements of each story as a group. 3. This will allow me time to assess whether or not the students understood the material fully. VII. Modifications for Special Needs: I will assist special needs students when needed. If a special needs student needs support during the activity I will offer that to them. VIII. Resources: 1. Story Retelling Chart 2. YouTube video/Smart board 3. Yarn 4. Alternate Activities: Students who finish early or need an alternate activity would work on a journal entry of a new story.
