Standards: Minor- 2A2a (investigate and describe how weathering wears down the earths surfacewater, ice, wind)

ind) Minor- 2A2b (site evidence to show that erosion shapes and reshapes the earths surface as it moves from one location to another water, ice wind) Major- 4.RIT.4 (determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to grade 4 topic or subject areas) Major- 4.RIT.3 (explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text)

FQ: What is the difference between weathering and erosion? EU: Weathering and erosion shapes and reshapes the Earths surface.

Procedures: 1) Unpack FQ and discuss the objective for the day. 2) Review the difference between weathering and erosion. 3) Explain that we will be discussing water erosion today in your stations. Go over the introduction PP as a whole group and have students take a few notes in their science notebooks. 4) Introduce important vocabulary words. Have the students record the vocabulary words on index cards. Students will come up with definitions as they go along. a. Water erosion b. Delta 5) Review what needs to be part of your science notebooks during an investigation and discuss. 6) Go over the stations and their expectations at each station.

Stations: Station 1: Investigation and Science Notebooks (teacher will be present during this investigation) INVESTIGATION STEPS: 1. In a large container, form a mountain of soil about 3 inches across (wide at the top) and about 5 or 6 inches tall in the container. 2. Press the coins/chips into the surface of the dirt/clay. (Place them at different angles with the edge protruding out; leave about half the coin showing.) 3. Create a rainstorm by pouring water on the mountain with the watering can. 4. Record your observations. (Are the coins sticking out more or less? What does the bottom of the mountain look like?) 5. Remove the coins and put them back onto a paper towel to dry. 6. Drain the water into a sink.

-After the investigation have students complete the observation portion in their science notebooks. (see attached for the required information in the science notebooks)

Station 2: What is water weathering and erosion? (content books) -Use chapter 2 in the Weathering and Erosion Book. -Answer a few questions. (see attached)

Station 3: What is water weathering and erosion? (content books) -Use chapter 2 in the Erosion -Answer a few questions. (see attached)

Station 4: -Use the National Geographic Website on the sqworl site to look deeper into weathering and erosion -Students will answer a few questions about weather and erosion as they explore the site. After Stations: 1) Students will complete any unfinished work from their stations. 2) Complete their vocabulary words and practice them. 3) Conference with students using the correct questions to meet their MAP data

Closure: Discuss what water weathering and erosion is. Take a few notes in science notebooks. (use the PowerPoint to guide your discussion). Discuss some of the pictures in the PP. Answer the FQ

Assessment: Observations in science notebooks Answers to station questions Group questions aligned to MAP data
