Student A: Sophie Year Level: Prep Nutshell statement: Sophie is able to estimate quantities up to ten, and can count

all numbers in successive order from one to ten. Sophie uses one-to-one correspondence (attributing one number to one quantity) to count a collection of objects, and can identify differences in quantities between groups of objects, using words such as more or less. Sophie is adept at demonstrating an awareness of location, by placing an object beside, behind or in front of another object. She is also able to accurately identify colour patterns and name each corresponding colour when pointed to. However, she is yet to match or continue patterns of objects following on from an original pattern. Sophie uses a subitising strategy (grouping quantities without counting) to name quantities, as well as matching numerals to quantities from zero up to four. Similarly, Sophie demonstrates that she is able to correctly order numeral cards from one to nine, and is also capable of correctly identifying numbers before and after a given number up to five. Sophie is also competent at ordering up to four objects from smallest to largest, and correctly identifying the smallest and largest object in the group.

Student B: Fatima Year Level: Grade 4 Growth Points reached: Domain Counting Growth Point Number 5 Growth Point Explanation Given a non-zero starting point, can count by 2s, 5s, and 10s to a given target (State Government of Victoria, 2009). Can read, write, interpret and order Place Value Addition & Subtraction Strategies 6 4 numbers beyond 100 (State Government of Victoria, 2009. Given a range of tasks (including multi-digit numbers), can solve them mentally, using the appropriate strategies and a clear understanding of key concepts (State Government of Victoria, 2009). Multiplication & Division Strategies 4 Can solve a range of multiplication problems using strategies such as commutativity, skip counting and building up from known facts (State Government of Victoria, 2009). Nutshell statement: Fatima can estimate a collection of objects greater than twenty, and uses a one-to-one correspondence strategy (attributing one number to one quantity) to count a collection of objects greater than thirty. Similarly, Fatima uses count on and count back strategies (counting forwards or backwards from a given number other than zero) for number problems up to four-digits in length. Fatima is capable of interpreting eight-digit numbers and can order four-digit numbers from smallest to

largest. However, she is yet to estimate a two-digit number within a set range (for example between 60 and 80) on a number line starting at zero up to 100. Fatima uses mental computation strategies such as known facts, counting on and back, doubling, adding ten or building to the next ten to solve multi-digit addition and subtraction problems. Likewise, Fatima demonstrates an understanding of the place value of the hundreds digit when solving three- and four-digit addition and subtraction problems. Fatima has also displayed knowledge of the known facts of multiplication and division to share an equal number of objects between a given number, as well as multiplying two-digit numbers.
