Jakob Hemerick Mrs. Knowles English-1 1st block 16/5/13 Are you ready to die? In the poem The Earth Opens and Welcomes you, the author, Abdellatif Laabi, focuses on the theme of when people die the earth welcomes them and its unexpected and peaceful. The author describes how when people die earth opens up and wants to welcome you to another place that is peaceful. In the poem The Earth Opens and welcomes you, Abdellati Laabi uses Metaphors and Imagery to communicate the theme its peaceful when you die and that person gets a second chance somewhere else. The first poetic device that was obvious was metaphors. On line 51-53, Your country will heal as if by miracle/when the men exhausted by illusion will/ go. Drink from the fountain or your goodness. They consider that person to be a leader and help overcome hard times. They were using a metaphor to compare water or a drink of goodness, and it will help them recover. This relates to my theme because they want him to share his goodness and he can distribute it to people before he dies. Another example that is, Fruits from the vast orchard of life (29). So its saying even though you die someone will continue the life you had after you die or your family. They are comparing orchard to life by using a metaphor to state they are similar like the reproduction system. This relates the theme because it is a part or earth and fruits grow in an orchard.

The other poetic device that was in the poem was imagery. In stanza 7, the speaker stats, Before leaving you left your desk clean. You can just picture in your brain what a clean desk looks like and how different people have different cleaning strategies. This shows imagery by saying the desk is clan and organized. This is communicating with the theme because this person that died had their desk clean for the next work day but that didnt happen. He never knew if he would do or how it would happen. The speaker states in line 15 Yesterdays word Tarnish by the Tumult. In other words tarnish mans that it was a commotion noise in a big crowd. This person said allot but the next day they sunk in the the earth and its people and it meant allot to them. The commotion that the speakers talking about would be in speechs form and this person said then the next day he died without living. Otherwise they did or did not live out the words that were said. He wasnt afraid of death to come because he did what he needed to do and he had a nice live that was ready to be over. When this person wasnt ready to die but was prepared. They were growing old and they had given out greatness to friends and family. Most of all they lived out their dreams. So the next time you think about death think of this. Do you have all of your dreams lived out to the fullest and are you ready to pass away when its your time.
