help in drawing a general conclusion with respect to other areas.

VI
CHAPTER ONE

1:1 INTRODUCTION
It is globally belief that the computers are able to provide useful information
if properly fed with a reasonable input or it will result in “Garbage in Garbage
out”.
The use of computer to carry out a very wide range of activities for work, study
and leisure has become part of our everyday life. It is no longer something that
you may want to use if you are interested; rather like motor car it is an
essential part of our lives. We are constantly told that anyone can use a
computer, and o some extent this is true. As we became more and more upon
technology this will not be enough.
Computer in commercial and industrial settings have been around for several
decades, nothing new about that. What is new however is the availability of
computing power at modest cost to managers and workers throughout business
organization and banking industries.
However, in the banking industry computer has been used in various areas carrying
out their day-to day activities. Thanks for the introduction of microcomputers,
the power to retrieve and process data no longer belongs exclusively to computer
specialist.

1:2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Modern technology have brought about the use of computer system in all areas of
our human Endeavour’s, in Nigeria and other African countries workers sees this as
an attempt to rep[lace them and to result them into mass retrenchment or loss
their jobs. They always believe that where computers are installed will require
less human effort to perform the desired operation. The problem of this study can
be stated as; does the computer effectively assist in the banking sector?

1:3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

In this perspective the objective of this study is to know the merit of
introduction of computer services into banking industries.
i. Computer take a lesser time in dealing with laid down projects, assignment
and acquisition.
ii. It is much reliable and also save time.
iii. It also provides easy accessing of already completes project.
iv. It also provide easy access of information about customer by just keeping
the customer account number into the computer.
v. Computer helps to detects and eliminate fraud for immediate action for
further occurrence.
1:4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Before the use of computer in united bank for West Africa plc (UBA) Nigerians will
recall the long-gone days of the tallies when customers needed to rush to the
bank’s as early as possible to submit their tellers in exchange for tallies so as
to avoid the long delay characteristics of that era. Which the analyst said that
the long queues and inefficiency of that era was as a result of the manual
processing of data.
By courtesy of modern developments in information and communication technology has
given the way to automated, faster and more seamless processing. These problems
include
Inaccuracy
Inefficiency
Time consuming
Tiredness at the end of the day

1:5 HYPOTHESES
For the purpose of this research the following hypotheses are drown in other to
arrive at the same answer.
i. The operation of the Nigerian banking industries are inefficient
ii. Efficiency is improved through computerization
iii. Computerization of banking industries is necessary
iv. Access can be made through computerization
v. Fraud is limited through effective computerization

1:6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of this project is to concern on the impact of computer services in
banking industries.
Lack of desired cooperation from some respondents by with holding some needed
information concerning their type of jobs limited the scope of this research work
to the content there in.

1:7 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS

Computer: Computer is an electronic devices that is capable of accepting data as
input, process the data and finally provide information as output. It also store
and analyze information fed into it, for calculating or controlling in machinery
automatically.
Software: Software is the invisible component that cannot be seeing physically by
the user of the system.
Program: Program is the set of instruction that direct and control the operation
of the computer hardware.
Computer Network: this is the ability of several computers to communicate with
each other. It also links a number of computers for the purpose of communication
and for sharing of common data files and peripherals.
Bank: Bank is a financial intermediary that performs one or more of the following
functions; safeguards and transfer, lend or facilitate lending, guarantees credits
worthiness and exchange money.
Computer services: this is the work done by the use of electronic machines e.t.c.
Banking Industry: This refer to a place where business activities of bank are
carried out as services.

CHAPTER TWO

2:1 HISTORICAL EVALUTION OF COMPUTER SYSTEM

The life of computer began with the abacus, calculating instrument still used
today by people throughout the world. No any improvements were made until in
seventeenth century.
In 1617, a Scotsman, John Napier of Marchiston (page 54) published a table of
logarithms for the first time which reduced complicated multiplication and
division to more single addition and subtraction. He also developed numbering rods
called “Napiers Bones” which speeded the multiplication process of that era.
By the year 1642 to 1694 ( page 55) an improvement was made by inventors like
Blaise Pascal with the “first calculating machine”, sir Samuel Moreland who built
a smaller calculator, Baron Gottifried Whilhelm Vonleibnitz and mathematicians and
machinists from various countries. From 1812 to 1833, the English man Charles
Babbage constructed his device which called “the Difference Engine” that add,
subtract, multiply and divide. Also the machine that used punched cards to store
information was developed by an inventor Joseph Jacquard (page 55- page 59).
From 1890 to 1944, an important breakthrough was made by DR. Herman Hollerith who
invented a machine that store information on punched paper cards. This machine was
used in the U.S census of 1890 and students at the Massachusetts institute of
technology who’s observed some relationship between laws of mathematical logic and
logic circuits.
The first all-Electronic was built for the united state army by scientists at the
more school of engineering at the university of Pennsylvania in 1946, called ENIAC
(Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator). In 1948, IBM cooperation come
out with SSEC (Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator) for scientific to use.
The computer age had begun.
Soon, other manufactures began to enter into computer field. In 1951, Remington
Rand produced and sold UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer), the first computer
to store data internally. The competitions continue.
New technology began to come very quickly, the development of transistors,
magnetic cores, silicon chips, and microprocessors, to name only a few of the
recent achievements have had a tremendous impact on the efficiency, speed, and
capabilities of computers. Who knows what will come next? We already have energy-
conserving robots working in dark and unheated factories. Know our health is
already beginning to be monitored by computers. What will the next breakthrough be
and one after? Perhaps you will be the one to build it.
2:2 BRIEF HISTORY OF BANKING IN NIGERIA
The period 1892-1952, there was an inquiry by the colonial administration to
investigate the banking practice in Nigeria.
In 1948, the inquiry under the leadership of G.D Paton was established by the
colonial administration purposely to investigate banking practices in Nigeria.
Prior to the inquiry, the banking industry was largely uncontrolled. The G.D Paton
report, an offshoot of the inquiry became the Conner stone of the first banking
legislation in the country. The banking ordinance of 1952.The ordinance was
designed to prevent non viable banks from much rooming and to ensure orderly
commercial banking.
Establishment of the CBN
Central bank of Nigeria serve as a mother of the banks which regulates, plans, and
controls the movement of the banks across the country.
By 1958, draft legislation for the establishment of the central bank of Nigeria
was presented to the House of Representatives, in March, 1958 the act was fully
implemented on July, 1959 when the central bank of Nigeria came into full
operation.
CBN Act from 1958-2007
The central bank of Nigeria Act, 1958 (as amended) and the banking Decree of 1969
(as amended) constituted the legal framework within which the CBN operate and
regulate banks. The wide range of economic liberalization and deregulation
measures following the adoption in 1986, of a Structural Adjustment Programme
(SAP) resulted in the emergence of more banks and other financial intermediaries.
The bank and other financial institutions (BOFI) Decree 24 and 25 of 1991, which
repealed the banking Decree of 1969 and all its amendments were, therefore,
enacted to straiten and extend the power of CBN to cover the new institutions in
order to enhance the effectiveness of monitory policy, regulation and supervision
of bank as well as non-banking financial institution. Unfortunately in 1997, the
federal government of Nigeria enacted the CBN (Amendment Decree No.3 and BOFI
(Amendment)) Decree No.4 in 1997 to remove completely the limit autonomy which the
banks enjoy since 1991.
The legal current framework within which the central bank of Nigeria operates is
the CBN Act of 1991 and all its amendments. The act provides that the CBN shall be
fully autonomous body in the discharge of its functions under the act and the bank
with other financial institutions act with the objective of promoting stability
and continuity in economic management.
Today, under the leadership of Chukwuma Soludo, the bank recent success is
partially due to the rise in crude oil prices. The banks use of capitalization has
given more strength to the banking sector agent an earlier failure by the central
bank to control the fall of many merchants’ banks and commercial banks in the
early 1990s. by the 1990, the liberalization agenda of an adopted Structural
Adjustment Programme (SAP) led by unprecedented growth in the banking sector.
However, a large number of banks in the sector were mainly engaged in arbitrage
and seeking government funds to stay afloat. By 1995, most of the banks were in
distress.

2:3 COMPUTER NETWORK IN NIGERIA

In Nigeria, our traditional payment model was the “brick and motar” system, which
was the same as expansion of bank branch networks necessitated by compulsory
appearance of consumers in the banks to consummate transactions. This system was
riddled with a number of challenges, chief among which were insecurity,
inconveniences, high cost of transaction, inability to access real time
information, cumbersomeness and high business risk.
Today, Nigerian banking industry has significantly influenced by evaluation of new
technology, the growing applications of computerized network to banking industries
reduced the cost of transaction and increase the speed of services sustainability.
The nature of financial intermediaries made banks improve their production
technology by focusing on destination of products. In other words, the evolution
of banking technology has been mainly driven by change in distribution channels as
we evidence from Over the Counter (OTC), Automated teller machines (ATM), Phone
Banking (PB), Personal Computer Banking (PC-Banking) and must recently Internet
Banking (IB).
However, it seems natural to consider progress in Nigerian banking technology as a
reason for market consumer given the nature of network in the banking sector. This
bring about the spreading of (ATM) across the country while an increasing number
of branches are being linked by sophisticated computer based systems.
2:4 OVERVIEW OF INTERNET BANKING
One might remember the days when he/she physically went to the bank to deposit or
withdraw, transfer and even to get a bank statement book manually updated by a
teller.
Today, internet banking (IB) frees both the bankers and customers of the need for
proprietary software to carry on with their online banking transaction.
2:5 APPLICATION OF COMPUTER TO CURRENT BANKING INDUSTRIES
Today, the study of banking industry in Nigeria has change for good. Industry
watchers and analysts are happy with technological innovations and creativity
brought into the dynamics of banking operation in last few years. Such services
are;
1) Electronic Banking: this involves banking with either your own computer or
with an Automated teller machines (ATMs).
a) Personal computer banking (PC-Banking): PC-Banking is the services rendered
by the banks to enable customers at home or their offices access their account for
transaction by dialing into the banks internet proprietary software system with
the help of password.
b) Automated teller machines (ATMs): the most visible form of electronic fund
transfer in relation to Nigerian banking sector w the introduction of Automated
teller machines (ATMs). The ATMs released banks from the constraints of time and
geographical location, they presented banks with a more economical substitutes for
brick and motar branches.
Infact, ATMs are generally connected to bank computers by private lines, the
branches are being linked by sophisticated computer based-systems, drastically
cutting down transaction time and cost.
2:6 DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER OPERATIONS
Saving Department: Saving department deals with paying and receiving of cash to
and from customers respectively. Computer help this department in viewing the
customer interest with the use of their account number.
2) Current Department: This department deals with paying and receiving of
chaques from organization or customers respectively. With the help of computer the
time consumed in performing this operation reduced.
3) Account Department: computer has immensely aided this department in
recording the asset and liabilities of the bank which was considered as the income
and revenue obtained from daily returns. Through computer an accountant can check
any department and also there is more access to it by customer’s ledger card
method.
4) Marketing Department: in this department computer reduces the stress imposed
on the public relations officers.
5) Credit Department: with the help of computer there is no need to start
looking for record of loans and advances rendered to any customer, with the help
of the customer account number an update can be made accordingly as customer make
his payment and the balance is displayed on the screen.
6) Clearing Department: this department use the computer n clearing of chaques
with much ease, and having the customer account number displayed immediately the
number is coded in, the chaque is cleared in less time.
7) Administrative Department: checking and record keeping of banking activities
are made very easy with the use of computer by having full and comprehensive
information about the bank. This lead to easy administration of it’s personal
activities within the bank.
8) Computer Department: All transaction obtained for the day are recorded in
this department, easy activities going on the other department have to be
transferred to the computer department, which stand as the central unit for the
bank for any record purposes.

4:1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter focuses on presenting the data obtained into the table, analyzed the
presented data and finally comes out with a reasonable realistic hypothesis of the
research conducted.
4:2 DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS
Tabulation is a part of the technical process in the statistical of data. The
essential operation in the in the tabulation is counting to determine the number
of cases that fall into the various categories. Manual tabulation is employed in
this research for objectivity and less consumption.
4:3 TEST OF HYPOTHESIS
Hypothesis 1: The operations of the Nigerian banking industry are inefficient?
From the Analysis of the questionnaire administered, it can be deduced that
operation of the Nigerian banking industry prior to the introduction of computers
was inefficient, because the operation were rated highly efficient after
implementing computers to the banking industries. The Rating was made based on
considering the online real time on wide area network access across the country.
Therefore, hypothesis 1 was proved that the operation of the Nigerian banking
industry were inefficient considering the above statement.
Hypothesis 2: Efficiency was improved through effective computerization.
Question 2: How efficient/speedy do you think your services is with the use of
online real time wide area network?
Table 1
RESPONSE NO. OF RESPONSE PERCENT (%)
Highly Efficient 9 90%
Efficient 1 10%
Inefficient 0 0%
Total 10 100%
From the above analysis on hypotheses 2, 90% of the respondents agreed that the
services delivered is highly efficient with the use of on line real time wide area
network while 10% says its only efficient.
Question 2: has the use of computer curtailed the long time delay spent on queue
by customers in the bank?
Table 2:
RESPONSE NO. OF RESPONSE PERCENT (%)
Yes 10 100%
No 0 0%
Total 10 100%

The table above has shown the total support of 100% from the respondent
(staffs),that is computer help to cut the long queue facing the customers while
performing their transaction with the bank.
Hypothesis 3: Computerization of banking industry is necessary.
Question 3:
RESPONSE NO. OF RESPONSE PERCENT (%)
Highly Efficient 10 100%
No improvement 0 0%
Inefficient 0 0%
Total 10 100%

All then respondents Rated the banking operation after introduction of computer as
highly efficient.
Question 2: is the automated system worth having?
Table 2:
RESPONSE NO. OF RESPONSE PERCENT (%)
Yes 10 100%
No 0 0%
Total 10 100%

In this case all the respondents show 100% of worth having interims of automated
system.
Question 3: Is your “online real time wide area network” available to both your
current and saving account holders?
Table 3:
RESPONSE NO. OF RESPONSE PERCENT (%)
Yes 10 100%
No 0 0%
Total 10 100%
The answer shows a 100% of access to both current and saving account holders to
enjoy “online real time wide area network facilities of their bank.
Therefore, the hypothesis 3 was proved positively as computerization of banking
industry is necessary.
Meanwhile, the use of computerized systems access can be made to an account
nationwide.
Hypothesis 4: Fraud is limited through computerization.

CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5:1 SUMMARY
Information system has been with us for a long time, may be as the history of man
him self. Then pencil and the clerk dominated the period around 1955. By today
standard, data processing was very rudimentary for most organizations because it
was limited to only accounting system, payrolls etc to operate business for
example, order processing and invoicing but computer come along with changes.
We are now moving to a time where access to the information can be made nationwide
upon “online real time wide area network “through our knowledge modern computers
and communication method have opened up new information technologies.
Computer has immensely aided in banking industry or baking sector in the areas of
managerial position, sales department and other various department in the bank.
The use of programmed decision making offers several important advantages to the
firm, since the computer is potentially capable of making better programmed
decision than the human user.
One of the most existing things about the information and retrieving is that they
are used oriented. In other word the ideal of implementing a new computer based
system result in satisfying the need of the operation and help to managers for
decision making which have never been possible by the former manual and electro-
mechanical methods to complete the function effectively since many business and
customers are falling to the bank, for effective performance of this duty it needs
an effective automated systems.
CONCLUSION
Computer wizard of today business has a greater role to play on business oriented
organization and especially in banking system.
The research has critically examined then influence of computer on modern banking
system in Nigeria. The finding of this research has show that computer has greatly
influence the banking industry and still reveling that there is a lot of room for
new expansions and improvement as the technology advances, the influences involve
positive excellent of services delivery e.g. taking decision promptly and
immediately, easy depositing of funds in one branch and retrieve it at another
branch location instantly e.t.c
Furthermore, internet banking is another concept of delivering services to
customers globally promptly as the client needs. Expansion does not mean having
more braches but providing higher quality services.
Conclusively, computer helps to speed up internal response and increase
efficiency, ascertain actual stock position.

RECOMMENDATION

Banking without visiting the bank is now technically possible as it was stated in
the conclusion. As the technology advancing, the industries should be re-
engineering their systems inform of automating the services as well as updating
the machinery and equipment like electronic banking.
Base on the finding of during this research study, the following are the
researcher’s recommendation of which if the management of the firm adopt would
bring about more improvement in their operations.
The recommendations are as follows, new hardware and software will be required
because it is what the case study of this research is using presently, and the
equipment is:
Mainframe and Microcomputers with other peripherals.
Network essentials e.g. Network card, Network cables, Network connectors,
Coaxial cables, Router and very small aperture terminal (VSAT).
New software for the management of human resources should be introduced in
order to enhance performance (pinnacle software).
Automated teller machines (ATM)
Provision of virtual private network (VPN) through which the bank will
collect and share the user name and password to their workers.
Finally, users of this system should be given adequate training to cope with
the usage of the system.
