Africa maize exports

SOUTH AFRICA exported 37,925 tonnes of white maize in the week to Jan 30,
up from 33,014 tonnes, boosted by higher sales to Zimbabwe and Mozambique,
the South African Grain Information Service (SAGIS) said on Tuesday.

said on Tuesday.Zimbabwe purchased 12,010 tonnes of white maize in the week to Jan 30 — a drop
from 19,932 tonnes of the total white maize export in the week to January 16, 2008. Mozambique bought
12,293 tonnes of white maize – the highest during that week.South Africa’s total yellow maize
exports rose to 2,207 tonnes from 1,982 tonnes in the week before, a SAGIS official told Reuters news
agency.South Africa also imported 4,129 tonnes of yellow maize from Brazil during the week, down from
23,303 tonnes previously.South Africa is the biggest maize producer on the continent. It has so far exported
1.45 million tonnes of the grain since the beginning of the maize marketing season last May, compared with
460,059 tonnes for the whole of the 2007/08 marketing season.The country harvested a bumper maize crop of
