Trigeminalneuralgia(TN),alsocalledticdouloureux ,isachronicpainconditionthatcauses extreme,sporadic,suddenburningorshocklikefacepain.Thepainseldomlastsmorethana fewsecondsoraminuteortwoperepisode.Theintensityofpaincanbephysicallyand mentallyincapacitating.TNpainistypicallyfeltononesideofthejaworcheek.Episodescan lastfordays,weeks,ormonthsatatimeandthendisappearformonthsoryears.Inthedays beforeanepisodebegins,somepatientsmayexperienceatinglingornumbingsensationora somewhatconstantandachingpain.Theattacksoftenworsenovertime,withfewerand shorterpainfreeperiodsbeforetheyrecur.Theintenseflashesofpaincanbetriggeredby vibrationorcontactwiththecheek(suchaswhenshaving,washingtheface,orapplying makeup),brushingteeth,eating,drinking,talking,orbeingexposedtothewind.TNoccurs mostofteninpeopleoverage50,butitcanoccuratanyage,andismorecommoninwomen thaninmen.Thereissomeevidencethatthedisorderrunsinfamilies,perhapsbecauseofan inheritedpatternofbloodvesselformation.Althoughsometimesdebilitating,thedisorderisnot lifethreatening. ThepresumedcauseofTNisabloodvesselpressingonthetrigeminalnerveintheheadasit exitsthebrainstem.TNmaybepartofthenormalagingprocessbutinsomecasesitisthe associatedwithanotherdisorder,suchasmultiplesclerosisorotherdisorderscharacterizedby damagetothemyelinsheaththatcoverscertainnerves.Youmayhaveoneormoreofthese symptompatternswithtrigeminalneuralgia: Occasionaltwingesofmildpain Episodesofsevere,shootingorjabbingpainthatmayfeellikeanelectricshock Spontaneousattacksofpainorattackstriggeredbythingsliketouchingtheface, chewing,speaking,andbrushingteeth Boutsofpainlastingfromafewsecondstoseveralseconds Episodesofseveralattackslastingdays,weeks,monthsorlongersomepeoplehave periodswhentheyexperiencenopain Paininareassuppliedbythetrigeminalnerve(nervebranches),includingthecheek, jaw,teeth,gums,lips,orlessoftentheeyeandforehead Painaffectingonesideofyourfaceatatime Painfocusedinonespotorspreadinawiderpattern Attacksbecomingmorefrequentandintenseovertime
