CHDV 150 Introduction to Curriculum Small Group Activity Planning Form (with explanations & grading criteria)

Name of Activity: Pumpkin cutouts Curriculum Area Math

Length of Activity: 15-20 minutes Learning Objectives (specify at least three): -The child will be able to identify different shapes: oval, circle, triangle, square, rectangle, star. -The child will be able to make an estimation -The child will be able to discuss what measurement means -The child will be able to problem solve to find where the shape goes.

Material/Equipment Needed: -Pumpkin -Roll of yarn Preparation (What do you need to do beforehand?): -Carve different shapes out of the pumpkin - Have a roll of yarn on the table Procedures (step by step) Be Specific *Beginning (How will I introduce activity?) will introduce the activity during circle time before they start the small group activity Can you help me find the right shapes to fit in the holes of this pumpkin? How much string do you think we need to fit around this pumpkin? I will let one child at a time reach into the pumpkin and pull out a shape, they will help each other find where the shape fits. I will let each of the children estimate the circumfrence of the pumpkin by using the yarn. *Middle: (How will I support/enhance/scaffold?) The person reading your lesson plan should be able to identify what you are saying or doing to support your stated learning objectives. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. If one child has a shape that they cannot find a spot for, that I know another child knows, I will ask that child if they can help each other out to find where the shape goes. Which of these shapes can you name? How else can we figure out how big this pumpkin is? -Do you think your string will fit around the pumpkin? -If a child tries putting a shape somewhere it doesnt fit, I will encourage them to try a different one. -As the children pull the shapes out of the pumpkin I will encourage them to name the shapes and tell them to each other. *End: (How will I bring activity to conclusion and transition to next activity?)

When we are done measuring our pumpkin, we are going to move on to our next activity. I will involve the children in the clean up process by asking each of them to grab a shape and put it back into the pumpkin, while they are putting them in the pumpkin I will have them name the shapes. - They will put their yarn they used to measure their pumpkin with, in their cubby. -After they put their yarn away, they will be able to go to which ever center they would like for free time. *Throughout the day/week, what opportunities will the children have to reflect back on this activity? -After the children have done this small group activity, the pumpkin will be placed in one of the centers for the children to revisit during free time. - Through the week I will encourage children to make estimations, while putting blocks back on the shelves I will ask, How many of these blocks do you think will fit on this shelf. I will grab a few different amounts of blocks and ask them which pile they think will fit. -Through the week I will help them remember the shapes they learned with the pumpkin activity. During Circle time we will revisit some of the shapes, I will point them out if we read about them in stories.
