Lesson Plan 3

Teacher Candidate: Amber Chesney Title of Lesson: Ask 5 Ws & 1 H & Answer Grade Level: Third Grade Subject Area: Reading Comprehension Lesson Topic (What is the big idea?): Student will learn the Ask 5 Ws & 1 H & Answer strategy. This strategy will help the student to determine the who, what, where, when, why, and how in a narrative text. The student will record this information onto a graphic organizer. This strategy will help him understand the details of what he is reading. What standard(s) and/or IEP goal(s) will it address? Colorado Academic Standards (2010) Grade Level Expectation: Third Grade Content Area: Reading, Writing, and Communicating Standard 2 Reading for all Purposes 1. Strategies are needed to make meaning of various types of literary genres. 2. Comprehension strategies are necessary when reading informational or persuasive text. 3. Increasing word understanding, word use, and word relationships increases vocabulary. Standard 3 Writing and Composition 3. Correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling are used when writing Main Objective of Instruction (What do you want the student(s) to learn?): By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the elements: who, what, where, when, why, and how, in a narrative text by using the Ask 5 Ws & 1 H & Answer strategy. He will be able to identify these elements independently and with 100% accuracy. Supporting Objectives: The student will be able to independently use the strategy as he is reading which will help him understand the text better. Specific Strategies to be taught/modeled: This strategy will help the student identify different aspects in a story, and as a result, he will be able to better understand what he is reading.

Planning for individual differences (mediated scaffolding): What are the accommodations/modifications you need to prepare? I will help the student with identifying the parts of the strategy during the we do part of the lesson, but he will be expected to use the strategy independently by the time he is doing the you do part of the lesson. Assessment: How will you assess students learning pre, during and post? Prior to the lesson, I will ask the student about the meaning of the 5 W s and the 1 H and what they tell him when he is reading a story. During the lesson, I will assess his learning by asking him which part of the strategy comes next and what he is going to look for while he reads. When the lesson is over, I will assess the students learning by looking at the graphic organizer that he filled out independently, and checking for accuracy. What management/grouping issues do you need to consider? This lesson will be taught to an individual student, so no grouping issues need to be considered. I will teach it in a quiet environment so that he will be able to concentrate better. I will provide a copy of the strategy to the student so that he may keep it for later use. Materials and Resources: My materials will include: Graphic organizer Pencil My resources for this lesson: Birsh, J. R. (Ed.). (2011). Multisensory teaching of basic language skills. (3rd Ed., pp. 371-373). Baltimore, MD.: Paul H. Brooks Publishing Co. Minskoff, E., & Allsopp, D. (2003). Academic success strategies for adolescents with learning disabilities & ADHD. (pp. 173-175). Baltimore, Maryland: Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co.

Generalization: How/where will students be able to integrate (generalize) this learning? This strategy can be used anytime the student reads a narrative story and will help him remember the details. This will help him to correctly answer comprehension questions and do a detailed retell of the story. How will you evaluate the lesson (judicious review)?

I will evaluate the lesson based upon how well the student is able to answer the 5 W and 1 H questions independently and fill in a graphic organizer with accuracy. Lesson Title: Ask 5 Ws & 1 H & Answer Main Objective of this lesson: By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the elements: who, what, where, when, why, and how, in a narrative text by using the Ask 5 Ws & 1 H & Answer strategy. He will be able to identify these elements independently and with 100% accuracy. (CONTENT-PROCESS) Opening: (SET How will you get the student(s) attention?) Relate lesson to prior learning. Communicate the objective of the lesson. In our previous lesson, you learned about the different parts of a story and how knowing that helps you to remember things about what you have read. Today I am going to teach you a different strategy that will help you to ask questions about the details of what you are reading and to understand how they relate. This will help you to understand more about the details of what you are reading and you will be able to answer comprehension questions and do retells better.

Procedure: (Is this an informal presentation, direct instruction, or structured discovery?) This is a direct instruction lesson with an individual student. Modeling Strategies (I Do): I will explain the parts of the strategy first: Who? - Identify and list characters What? - Identify and list the events or actions Where? - Identify and list all of the places in the reading When? - Identify and list all of the time factors in the reading Why? - Identify and list causes for events or actions How? - Identify and list the way events took place Answer the questions using a graphic organizer and review the details you listed

Then I will read a narrative story and model the strategy. Check for Understanding- What will you ask? To check for understanding, I will periodically ask the student which part of the strategy comes next and what he is going to look for while he reads.

Differentiation: In the beginning of the lesson, I will help the student remember to refer back to the strategy if he needs assistance in remembering what he needs to do. By the end of the lesson, he will be able to use the strategy independently and will be writing his answers on a graphic organizer. (PRODUCT) Guided Practice (We Do): The student and I will read a story together. As we are reading, we will identify the 5Ws and 1H and write the information on the graphic organizer. Closure: Student(s) summarize, demonstrate learning of lesson. Independent Practice (You Do). The student will read a narrative text, with teacher assistance if necessary. Then the student will independently use the strategy and fill out a graphic organizer. Formally END the lesson. The student and I will look over his graphic organizer and celebrate his accomplishment.
