Handwriting Project

For this project, you will research the history of handwriting and demonstrate your handwriting skills as well as a personal style that you could develop. This is a handwriting project, as such, the presentation of this project needs to be HANDWRITTEN using foundation cursive font! This project will not benefit from cut and pastes from the internet, but rather, the time taken to research and neatly write out your discoveries about handwriting. Your project has three parts a research part, an observation part and a design part. The research part of your project should answer each of the questions below: how was knowledge passed from generation to generation, or even community to community, before handwriting arrives about 4000 years ago? what benefits would a society have from a written means of communication? what were Cuneform images used by the Sumerians and how might they have influenced later handwriting? where do Egyptian hieroglyphs fit into the history of handwriting? how did the Romans influence our written alphabet? what has been the impact of various technologies on handwriting clay tablets, papyrus, ink, quills, pencil, biro as well as the advent of printing presses? The observation part of your project needs you to look at a pictorial or graphical way of writing and communicating (such as used by the Aborigines, Sumerians, Egyptians or even Mayans). You need to show the ancient script and write your observations about how the symbols link to sounds, words, ideas or things. (What is most spectacular about the writing, what obvious links are there to things or ideas, how hard would it be to write etc.) Finally, for the design part of your project, create a handwritten alphabet in a style or font that represents you. If may be free flowing and carefree, it may be tightly-controlled and organised, it may have symbols representing letters or ideas. Whatever you choose, make it YOUR style.
