Max Torres Period 8 John Ashberys poem The Cathedral Is, displays certain poetic elements that certainly

contribute to the overall poem, which is clearly ironic. A giant element I want to discuss is how the poem clearly is trying to explain how destructive mankind is. When we hear the words slated and demolition we think of set, and destruction. We would easily be fooled that this poem is just saying one thing, the Cathedral is set for destruction, but when we end up finding the true meanings and patterns of the words, we easily figure it out. The main definition for slate is to cover, or even to criticize, in a severe fashion. So now, the poem is saying that the Cathedral is being criticized for demolition. The main definition for demolition would be an overwhelming defeat. Now we can see a giant ironic pattern. The Cathedral is being criticized severely for an overwhelming defeat. Now, we think of Cathedral as a big, nice, beautiful Church, but the main definition of Cathedral would be a diocese, which is mainly the center of the Church. This is where mainly every person would be, mankind. So now, the poem has a different wording. Mankind is being criticized severely for having an overwhelming defeat. In this case, who would defeat mankind? Only mankind itself. This is what I believe the secret of this poem is. It is stating a thesis on mankind, that mankind is beyond destructive, that they can even destruct themselves without any thinking. I believe the poem gives a true thesis, and maybe even a warning.
