Course: Algebra Enriched Lesson: Volume of Spheres, Cylinders, and Cones Date: March 21, 2013 Period: 2 Notes:

This lesson is one of the last lessons of the unit. Students will have learned how
to find the volume of spheres, cylinders, and cones, but now will apply this information to real-life applications.

Objectives:
At the completion of this lesson, students will: Use prior knowledge of volumes of spheres, cylinders and cones to real-life applications Generate discussion with their peers and their teacher of possible ways to answer real life problems with volumes of spheres, cylinders, and cones

Standards Addressed:
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres (8.G.9)

Standards of Mathematical Practice Addressed:

1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 6 Attend to Precision.

Agenda
1. Agenda and go over homework 2. Homework Questions 3. Quick review of scientific notation 4. Work in groups to answer the questions on the volume task 5. Get checked for your work 6. Work time to get your review done

Materials:
1. Smart Board 2. Quick Review of Scientific Notation 3. Volume Task 4. Review for Test #8

Prior Assignment/Preparation:
Students have learned about volumes of cylinders, spheres, and cones and they already have a background of operations with scientific notation.

Specific Lesson Outline and Notes

1. Agenda/Homework Assigned Students, as expected, will have their agendas out on their desks at the beginning of class. The assignment will be written on the smart board. 2. Go over any questions on their homework Students will have an opportunity at the beginning of class to ask questions on their homework. Students and/or I will help with a few questions the kids may have. 3. Quick Review of Scientific Notation I will give the students one or two examples with operations of scientific notation and we will go over a class a review of how to perform these operations. 4. Work in groups to answer the questions on the volume task The students will work in groups to answer the questions on the task thats given. I will be circulating to answer questions that students may have if they got stuck. I will be walking around to ask questions that will hopefully generate more discussion in the groups.

5. Get checked off for your work I will make sure the groups will have the correct answers on their tasks before they leave class. They know the expectation is that they get checked off before the end of the period. 6. Work time to get your review done If the students finish their work with time to spare, they can work on their homework due the next class. They are expected to work until the end of the period.

Closure
All the students in a group need to have the correct answers on their task in order to get checked off for the assignment.

Assessment
The task will serve as an assessment as well as their homework assignment.
