Ward AP Chemistry, Period 4 8 October 2012 Title: Oxidation- Reduction Titrations Source: Flinn Scientific, Inc. Partner Names: Michael Choi, Pan Choi, Shaina Desai Date: 10/1/12 Abstract: The purpose of this lab is to standardize a solution of KMnO4 by redox titration with a standard solution of ions. Also, it helps the students see the action of the electron transfer and the effect of the chemical reaction. Basically the students perform an oxidation-reduction titration between a standardized solution of potassium permanganate and a standardized solution of Iron(II) ions. Then, the concentration of oxalic acid was determined by the titration of oxalic acid with the permanganate solution. Results and Discussion: After completing the lab, we used .01337mL of the MnO4- in the part 1 and .0160mL MnO4- in part 2. The molarity of Fe+2, MnO4- , and H2C2O4 is 0.100M, 0.0237M, and 0.0260M, respectively. Our percent yield was 74.79% and the percent error was 33.70%. A possible source of error could be using tap water to clean and rinse the materials for reuse, thus resulting in slight deviations from 100% accuracy. Also, inaccurate measuring of exact volumes of solutions may be another source of error. Post-Lab Calculations: 1. From the Part 1 standardization the data, calculate the molarity of the MnO4- solution for each trial. Average the values and enter the average in the Part 2 data Table. 5 * VMnO4- * MMnO4- = VFe2+ * MFe2+ 5 * 0.01337L * MMnO4-= 0.0998 L * 0.100 M MMnO4-= 0.149 mol/L 2. From the Part 2 titration data, calculate the molarity of the H2C2O4 solution for each trial. Average the values and enter the average in the Part 2 Data Table. MH2C2O4=5(MMnO4)(V MnO4)/2(VH2C2O4) = 5(0.0149M)(0.01600L)/2(0.02512L)=0.0237M MH2C2O4= 0.0237M 3. How many moles of Fe2+ ions and MnO4- ions were titrated in each Part 1 trial? 5 * VMnO4- * MMnO4- = VFe2+ * MFe2 5 * 0.01600L * 0.02 M = 0.00998 L * MFe2+ MFe2+= 0.160 mol/L 0.160 MFe2+ x 0.00998LFe2+ = 0.00160molFe2+ 0.00160molFe2+ (1 mol MnO4- / 5 mol Fe2+) = .000320 mol MnO4Moles Fe2+ titrated: 0.00160mol Fe2+ Moles of MnO4- titrated: 000320mol MnO4-
