Electrical Panels for Operating Theatres The Prisma Medical Solution

Protection against power outages : Lives at stake.

Reliability In order to ensure quality patient care and reach productivity targets to an increasing extent, hospital physical plants are, structured around technical hubs. This provides greater dependability, higher quality and enhanced flexibility. Additionally, the advent of new medical technologies and treatments has introduced into the hospital environment increasingly sophisticated medical equipment requiring a continuous electrical power supply. A successful surgery now depends not only on the medical staffs effectiveness and skill, but also on the reliability of the hospitals infrastructures. Prisma Medical was designed as part of an overall strategy to improve the reliability of hospital electrical distribution systems by implementing recommended architectures, approved equipment and appropriate maintenance plans. Prisma Medical was developed to meet the most stringent dependability requirements. Patient safety The patient environment is a prime target for electrical accidents. Nowhere else can one find these elements: lowered body resistance, more electrical equipment, and conductors such as blood, urine, saline, and water. The combination of these elements presents a challenge to increase electrical safety. Procedures for electrical safety should include the following: Use of isolated system (IT grounding) Realization of proper grounding of the installation Continuous monitoring of isolation. The Prisma Medical Solution fully integrates these safety recommendations, with: A qualified solution: the design and the realization of the solution from Schneider Electric ensures that grounding and isolation are fully performed. Field test and inspection: because of the complexity of isolated power and ground system, the manufacturer should field test the system before use. Limited leakage currents. Risk management New regulations introduce greater accountability on the part of hospital management and stress the importance of infrastructure quality as it applies to the electrical power supply, air treatment and other systems operated by hospitals. Given these new responsibilities, sharing information is crucial. Medical staff, maintenance personnel and hospital management must be able to monitor the status of hospital infrastructures to provide an effective response in the event of a crisis. Prisma Medical is designed to keep downtime for repairs to a minimum and to restore normal operation as quickly as possible. During a crisis the various operators have access to essential data. Once a problem has been resolved, the integrated data-logging system can be used to retrace the various steps in the process: from the occurrence of the fault and the call for assistance to the response by a technician, resolution of the fault and return to normal operation. A report can then be generated automatically.

A set of dedicated international and national standards

In order to meet the high level of requirements in healthcare facilties, electrical installations must meet the following standards : IEC 60364-7-710: "Electrical installations of buildings Requirements for special installations or locations Medical locations". IEC 61557-8: "Electrical safety in low voltage distribution systems up to 1000 V a.c. and 1500 V d.c. Equipment for testing, measuring or monitoring of protective measures Part 8: Insulation monitoring devices for IT systems". IEC 61558-2-15: "Safety of power transformers, power supply units and similar - Part 2-15: Particular requirements for isolating transformers for the supply of medical locations". IEC 60601-1: "Medical electrical equipment Part 1: General requirements for safety".

IEC 60601-1-1: "Medical electrical equipment Part 1-1: General requirements for safety Collateral standard: Safety requirements for medical electrical systems". In Denmark : Elektriske Installationer Strkstrmsbekendtgrelsen, and in particular Afsnit 6A, kap. 7.10 The Prisma Medical electrical switchboard has been developped in the scope of those standards and, thus, is the perfect solution for group 2 medical location class <0,5s, as defined per Afsnit 6A :

The Prisma Medical electrical panel solution

The Prisma Medical solution is a type tested electrical switchboard dedicated to operating theatres. It provides a safe electrical distribution according to the latest applicable standards for medical facilities, using an isolated IT system network. No power shutdown during an operation Record the events of the operating room utilities to ensure traceability Medical staff have to get a clear understanding of facility status

Prisma Medical uses state-of-the-art Schneider Electric components (circuit-breakers, medical transformers, insulation monitoring, TAC automation) which are being used successfully in hospitals all over the world. The Prisma medical panel is divided into several areas : Cable connection area (type 1 : connection to a centralized UPS, type 2 : connection to a local UPS, type 3 : connection to redundant centralized UPS system) TAC automation area, connected to a touch screen panel and/or a building management system. The 24V supply possesses a 1-hour battery that guarantee that, even in case of major electrical outage, the medical staff is kept informed and traceability is possible. TN circuit breakers area, to feed medical equipment not meant to be on the IT network (Negatoscope, shutters, peripheral lighting) Insulation monitoring device for Medical IT network (including resistance visualisation, variable threshold and fail safe mode) IT circuit breakers area, to feed medical equipement of the operating room. Up to 28 outgoings of 10A or 13A can be installed

Isolating medical transformer (6,3 kVA, 8 kVA and 10 kVA) and a battery charger that feeds the automation part and the touch screen panel in case the panel is running on a UPS during a main power shutdown Wiring & busbar : A minimal distance of 10 cm is maintained between cables when they belong to different grouding system (TNS / IT) or datas, and when they cross, this is done at right angles (in order to ensure grounding and EMC).

The Man Machine Interface

An operating theatre control panel designed specifically for the surgical team High on the list of medical staff demands is access to an overview of data on the operational status of the theatre. Existing control panels are complicated and cumbersome, and they do not lend themselves to intuitive problem-solving in the event of a fault. Prisma Medicals colour touch-screen control panel was developed based on studies targeting surgeons and surgical nurses.

The screens smooth surface makes it easy to clean and it is designed to withstand the aggressive cleaning agents commonly used in operating theatres. Additionally, the touch screens innovative ergonomics are particularly well suited to medical staff needs. All the essential data for supervising the operational status of the theatre can be viewed on a single display. Upon opening the operating theatre, nurses can quickly: check the temperature, humidity and ambiant air over-pressure test the insulation monitoring system adjust the intensity of peripheral lighting check that the theatres electrical power supply is operating normally during the operation Prisma Medical alerts the surgical team in real-time of any faults, indicating their seriousness, so that the team can take the right decision.

Prisma Medical also provides theatre managers with access to the information they need In real-time, the operating theatre manager can view the status of all operating theatres and receive alerts for all current failures right from his or her PC. For each individual theatre, the manager can print out an operational report for the surgeon with environmental data and a date-stamped list of any alarms. The data logged by each operating theatre controller are automatically saved to the operating theatre managers PC for data archiving and traceability. Prisma Medical gives operational staff easy access to essential data Operational staff both at the hospital and off-site are informed in real-time of any alarms with an indication of their seriousness. Prisma Medicals integrated Web technology makes accessing information from a cordless phone or PC easy. Maintenance managers can access information for each operating theatre via a PC connected to the hospitals Ethernet network. No special software is needed.

Example of informations displayed

Status of the main/UPS power supply

Status of insulation monitoring A fault is indicated by an orange light, along with a buzzer sound coming from the touch screen

The medical team can acknowlegde the alarm by pressing this symbol (this will shutdown the buzzer sound)

This symbol indicates alarm acknowledgement by the maintenance team. It allows the medical team to know that maintenance team is aware of the problem

Temperature control Available if Prisma Medical connected to a Building Management System

Overpressure indication

Relative humidity indication

Relative humidity control Available if Prisma Medical connected to a Building Management System

Ventilation of the operating theatre can be shut down Available if Prisma Medical connected to a Building Management System

Light from the Prisma Medical touch screen can be reduced when medical team does not want to be disturbed by the light of the screen itself

Peripheral lights of the operating theatre can be switched on/off, and then can be regulated by a dimmer in the Prisma Medical (optional)
