2.3 fatty acid I examined acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, caproic acid, capric acid.

The lower fatty acids, in order to avoid losses due to volatilization during the operation because acid chlorides have low boiling points. In using method 2 they were distilled off during the reaction as the acid chlori de was formed. Lower fatty acid 0.1mol, [1] is heated to a predetermined temperature with 0.4mo l of disulfur dichloride and 0.2g of iron (III) acetate, at least 0.1mol of chl orine is passed into the reaction system gradually, and was allowed to stop when all acid chloride was generated. An upper boiling fraction limit should be esta blished and then the distillate should be purified by redistillation. With the lower fatty acids, the molar ratio of acid to chlorine is 1-2. The yiel d of the acid chloride reaches 90% or even more, chiefly depending upon the addi tion of chlorine. For capric acid and caproic acid, acid 0.1mol is brouhgt under reflux with 0.5-1 mol of S2Cl2 and 0.2g of iron (III) acetate. The temperature should reach 125 ~ 130 ?. After passing through 0.1mol chlorine gradually, Caproic acid chloride (bp 140~154)
