HOMEWORK 9 ASE 366K, Spacecraft Dynamics Assigned: Friday March 29, 2013 Due: Friday April 5, 2013 Follow

the directions for homework format given in the syllabus.

This problem consists of several sub-parts, all of which are related to the nal answer. Give all velocities and V s in m/s, and all masses in kg.

(1) A manned vehicle is on the Lunar equator, and must rendezvous with an orbiter in a circular orbit at h = 100 km altitude. Given a rotating moon (rmoon = 1737 km, moon = 4902 km3 /s2 , moon = 2.6638 106 rad/s), what is the initial moon-centric speed of the manned vehicle as it sits on the surface? (2) Given this small initial speed, what is the total V required to launch and reach the orbiter? (3) Once the vehicle rendezvouses with the orbiter, the combined craft must reach Lunar escape velocity. What is the V required from the circular orbit to reach parabolic escape speed? (4) Assume that all the V in part 3 comes from the manned vehicle. Using a vehicle mass of mv = 1000 kg and an orbiter mass of mr = 1500 kg, what fuel mass is required to perform the V in part 3? Use a fuel Isp of 310 s, and recall that g0 = 9.81 m/s2 . The vehicle and orbiter mass includes both payload and structure mass. (5) Using the results thus far, what is the total combined mass of the entire craft immediately after the vehicle rendezvouses with the orbiter? Include payload, structure, and fuel mass. (6) What is the total mass of the vehicle (including fuel) immediately before rendezvous? (7) What is the fuel required to launch the vehicle from the surface to the rendezvous orbit? (8) In summary, what is the total fuel required for all phases of the mission? This is the sum of the fuel required for both the launch maneuver and the maneuver to leave the circular orbit.

The rocket equation: V = ve ln Where: ve = g0 Isp m0 mf
