The College of Arts and Architecture’s e-Learning Institute, as part of its mission to create online
and blended courses for the College, wishes to collaborate with the Department of Art History to
undertake the design and development of an online version of Art History 111, Ancient to
Medieval Art. This initiative will develop a new online course to be delivered in residence at
University Park, as well as through the auspices of Penn State Online.

The design and development of this course will require a significant amount of collaboration
between the author and the e-Learning Institute; therefore, the purpose of the remainder of this
document is to summarize our expectations of each of the participant’s roles in this project.

The project is to start at the beginning of the summer of 2007 and is to be completed at the end of
summer of 2008. Upon completion of the design and development effort, the course is to be
offered as a piloted in the fall of 2008.

Responsibilities of the Faculty Member

The faculty member will:

1. Participate as subject matter expert for the design and development of the online Art
History 111
2. Agree to participate as an e-Learning Faculty Fellow for the duration of the design and
development effort
3. Agree that the compensation provided, as outlined below, covers content authorship
costs incurred for the design and development effort
4. Work in accordance with the project timeline developed by the Institute in conjunction
with faculty member and unit head
5. Work with the Institute’s instructional designers to develop and implement a pedagogical
plan for the delivery of the course (e.g., course syllabus, course content, instructional
activities, assessment)
6. Develop course outlines and subsequent content to be included in the course and
selecting course textbooks/readings where appropriate
7. Work with the Institute’s media design specialist to identify and evaluate media elements
used within the course
8. Learn how to utilize ANGEL for the delivery of the course
9. Work with the Institute to implement best practices for online delivery
10. Work with the Institute to ensure accuracy of content, grammar, etc., as well as staying
within standard copyright practices
 11. Collaborate with the Institute to obtain permission to use copyrighted materials in the on-
line course and to adhere to the requirements of the TEACH Act
12. As needed, work with the unit head to produce any materials that may be required for
Faculty Senate approval

Responsibilities of Unit Head

The Unit Head will:

1. Support and help facilitate meeting the course timeline

2. Support the appointment of the faculty member to be an e-Learning Faculty Fellow
Appoint [Name] as an Instructor of Art History for the development of an on-line version
of ART H 111 during Summer 2007, Fall 2007, Spring 2008, and Summer 2008.
3. Ensure that the course does not stray from the faculty senate approved outline by
reviewing or designating a reviewer to approve the course syllabus, course content, and
activities prior to course launch
4. As needed, work with the faculty member to produce any materials that may be required
for Faculty Senate approval

Responsibilities of e-Learning Institute

The Institute will:

1. Be responsible for the overall project management throughout the design and
development effort including the development of project timelines and the scheduling of
status review meetings with unit heads and faculty members
2. Appoint the faculty member as an e-Learning Faculty Fellow for the duration of the
design and development effort
3. Support the design and development effort by determining staffing needs based on
project deadlines
4. Work with faculty to design, develop, and implement a pedagogical plan for the delivery
of the course (e.g., course syllabus, course content, instructional activities, assessment)
5. Assist faculty in the development of course outlines and guide faculty in writing
subsequent content to be included in the course
6. Work with faculty to identify and create media elements used to support the course
content
7. Design and develop the online course interface, course instructional flow, instructional
activities, and supporting Angel spaces for the delivery of the course
8. Develop an evaluation model for determining the effectiveness of the course
9. Work with faculty to implement best practices for online delivery
10. Help prepare the faculty member to deliver future course offerings
11. Design and develop agreed-upon multimedia elements

Course Use/Copyright of Course Materials

Per the Penn State University Courseware Copyright Agreement, this is a commissioned work;
therefore, all terms and agreements contained within the copyright agreement apply to this
document.

Financial Compensation
The e-Learning Institute will provide a sum of $XXX to [Name] to develop the Art History 111.
Payments will be made as follows:
$XXX at the end of summer 2007
$XXX at the end of fall semester 2007
$XXX at the end of spring semester 2008
$XXX at the end of summer 2008

Finally, as part of the compensation for the course, the e-Learning Institute would also like to
appoint [Name] as an e-Learning Faculty Fellow for the duration of the project (summer 2007 to
end of summer 2008).

By signing this document, both the Unit Head and faculty member are agreeing to the
compensation outlined above as well as the faculty member’s participation as an e-Learning
Faculty Fellow for the term noted above. In order for this memorandum to take effect, the
document must be filled out and have the five required signatures (Dean of the College, Unit
Head, Faculty Author, Witness to Author, and Director of the e-Learning Institute), then returned
to [Name] by April 27, 2007.
