Pressure Systems
A High Pressure is a pressure surrounded by low pressures. It is also referred to as an anticyclone an approximately circular portion of the atmosphere having a relatively high atmospheric pressure and is characterized by good weather. Opposite to it is the Low Pressure, which is a pressure surrounded by high pressures and is referred to as a cyclone.

Movements of Pressure Systems

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

L
LOW PRESSURE (CYCLONE) Counterclockwise With winds blowing slightly inwards across the isobars at an angle of around 10-20 degrees

L
Clockwise With Converging Air

H
HIGH PRESSURE (ANTICYCLONE) Clockwise With winds blowing slightly outwards across the isobars at an angle of around 15-20 degrees

Counterclockwise With Diverging Air

Buys Ballots Law

This is named after Dutch Meteorologist C.H.D. Buys Ballot who published it in 1857. This rule is useful in locating the center of cyclones and anticyclones. It states that...

FACING AWAY from the wind in the NORTHERN

HEMISPHERE, the LOW lies to the LEFT (90-135 degrees) and the HIGH to the RIGHT

FACING AWAY from the wind in the SOUTHERN

HEMISPHERE, the LOW lies to the RIGHT (90-135 degrees) and the HIGH to the LEFT

Determining your vessels position with respect to a storm center
