What

is it?
When a woman is pregnant and as the baby develops, the placenta makes several hormones that can block the way insulin acts in the mother. This leads to insulin resistance. This means your bodys cells cannot turn blood sugar into energy, which causes blood sugar to rise. How often does this happen? About 7% of all pregnancies result in gestational diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Does this mean I will have diabetes for the rest of my life? No. Blood sugars should return to normal after delivery.

Check your Blood Sugar

Good control of blood sugar: Fasting blood sugar between 60-95mg/dL 2 hours after meals 120mg/dL or less
These numbers are lower than a person with diabetes mellitus because when pregnant, blood glucose levels should be under strict control for the health of the baby and for the health of the mother. **If your blood sugar numbers are consistently higher than those listed above for 2-3 days in a row, contact your physician to discuss your numbers and possible need for insulin.
