Problem 1 A particle leaves the origin with an initial velocity of vi = (2.10 m/s)x +(3.65 m/s)y , 2 2 and moves with constant acceleration a = (1.70 m/s )x + (2.15 m/s )y . (a) How far does the particle move in the y direction before reversing its direction in the y direction? (b) What is the particles velocity (magnitude and direction) when it reverses direction in y ? SOLUTION (a) Solve the following for y :
2 2 vf,y vi,y = 2ay y 2 vi,y 2ay (3.65)2 y = 2(2.15)

y =

y = 3.10 m the particle moves 3.10 m in the y direction. (b) Solve for t: vy = ay t vy t = ay (3.65) t = (2.15) t = 1.70 s Find vx when the particle turns around in y : vx = ax t + vi,x vx = (1.70)(1.70) + (2.10) vx = 4.65 m/s
2 + v2 = v . Since vy = 0 when it turns around, v = vx x y the particles velocity is 4.65 m/s in the x direction when it turns around in the y direction.

Problem 2 Indiana Jones is hanging onto a rope at the bottom of a snake pit. He must be pulled out but the rope will break if the tension in it exceeds 855 N. (a) Draw a free-body diagram for this situation. Label all forces and relevant information. (b) If Indiana Jones has a mass of 73.5 kg and the snake pit is 5.0 m deep, what is the minimum time necessary to pull our intrepid explorer from the pit? Assume that Indy is initially at rest and that he is pulled with a constant acceleration. (Hint: you need to calculate the acceleration.) Take g = 9.81 m/s2 . SOLUTION (a)
T y

mg

(b) To nd the minimum time necessary, the tension in the rope must be exactly equal to 855 N: F = T W = T mg = ma T = mg + ma = 855 855 mg a= m 855 (73.5)(9.81) a= (73.5) a = 1.82 m/s2 Assuming Indiana Jones is initially at rest: y = vi,y t + (1/2)ay t2 = (1/2)ay t2 t = 2y ay 2(5.0) (1.82)

t =

t = 2.34 s the minimum time needed to pull Indy out of the pit is 2.34 s
