WearenowgoingtoexplorewhattheAmerican CultureiswhatotherculturescontributetoAmerican Culture.Letstakesometimetoshareoutafew interestingfactsyoulearnedaboutyourculture(teacher chooseafewstudents). Teacherwillmodelanexampleofthegraphicorganizer
(seeattached).Teacherwillputthegraphicorganizer onadocumentcameraandaskstudentstoselect4 statesforcomparison.Theteacherwillengagestudent inadiscussionaboutthesimilaritiesanddifferences betweenfourchosenstatesanddifferencesbetween allstates.Teacherwillthenlistthesimilaritiesinthe middlecircleanddifferencesintheseparatecircles. Rationale
Nowthatstudentshaveidentifiedandresearchedtheirown cultures,theywillbeabletoidentifysimilaritiesand differencesbetweentheirownandtheirclassmatescultures. Thiswilldevelopempathyandtoleranceinthestudents,as wellasinspirecuriosityabouttheworld.TheMultiperspective InquiryMapstates,Thisreflectiveinquiryrecognizesand embracestheexistenceofmanyplausibleandilluminating interpretationsofthesamestoriesandhumanevents (Henderson&Gornik,2007).Theculturestheyhave researchedandidentifiedwithprovideamoreindepth perspectivewhilethecomparisonsenablethemtosee additionalperspectivesandcultures.TheDIinthislessonwill supportdiverselearningstylesandthedialogueandcultural topicsdiscussedthroughoutthelessonarepresentedinthe endbythestudents(Henderson&Gornik,2007).
