E&M Signaling

69

E&M Signaling

E&M Signaling is a common trunk-signaling technique used on telephony switches and PBXs. The signaling and voice trunks in E&M are separated. In E&M, voice is transmitted over either two or four-wire circuits, with six methods for signaling over two-wire circuits. E&M signaling methods are referred to as Types I, II, III, IV, and V. E&M lead conditions for off-hook and on-hook for Types I through V are summarized in the following table:

70

Pin Number 8 7 6 5 4 3 2

Pin Color Brown White/Brown Green White/Blue Blue White/Green Orange SG E

Pin Name

Tip1 Tip Ring Ring1 M

White/Orange

SB

Noted that no matter Trunk side equipment or PBX side equipment, the 2 nd pin is always M Lead, the 7th pin is always E Lead.

71

When Trunk Side equipment detects the off-hook condition from a E&M telephone, the trunk side equipment generates the E lead signal to signify the PBX side equipment by grounding the E lead. The PBX side equipment detects the E lead signal by sensing the increase in current through a resistive load detector, and will send back a dial tone to Trunk side equipment. Similarly, when PBX side equipment detects an off-hook condition from another side and signify Trunk side equipment by generating M lead signal by grounding the M Lead , the Trunk side equipment detects the increase of current and know there is a off-hook condition coming from PBX side equipment.

Noted that under E&M Type V, both the PBX side equipment and the Trunk side equipment supply battery. At the PBX side equipment, battery is supplied on the E lead, and at the Trunk side equipment it is supplied on the M lead.
Type V is the most common method of E&M signaling outside North America.
72

With the Type I interface, the Trunk side equipment generates the E signal to the PBX side equipment by grounding the E lead. The PBX side equipment detects the E signal by sensing the increase in current through a resistive load. Similarly, the PBX side equipment generates the M signal by sourcing a current to the Trunk side equipment, which detects it through a resistive load.

73

E&M Type II has two additional leads over Type I: Signal Battery (SB) and Signal Ground (SG). In this circuit type, the E lead is paired up with the SG lead, and the M lead is paired up with the SB lead. An on-hook at the PBX end is indicated when the E leads and M leads are open. Alternatively, an off-hook is indicated when the E lead is grounded and the M lead is providing battery.

74

E&M Type III is used mostly in older telephone company switching centers.

75

E&M Type IV is similar to E&M Type II; however, from the PBX side, an on-hook occurs when the E and M leads are open, and an off-hook occurs when both leads are at ground

76

Example : E&M card functions as a relay.

8RS232 of AM3440
Introduction

96

System Description
1. System Description
The 8RS232 Interface Card for Loop-AM3440 has 8 interface ports. For the RJ version, 8 RJ48 connectors are available in Asynchronous mode only. For the DB version, 2 RJ48 provide 2 ports and 2 DB44 connectors provide 3 ports each. Two cables are included. Each cable converts from DB44 connector to two DB25 and one DB9 connectors.
For Asynchronous signals, the card can be used in either INDEPENDENT mode or MUX mode. In the INDEPENDENT mode, each of the 8 Asynchronous ports up to 19.2 Kb/s rate, is assigned a separate 64 Kb/s channel. In the MUX mode, up to 5 ports, each up to 9.6 Kb/s, can share a single 64 Kb/s channel. The rest 3 ports will be multiplexed to another 64Kb/s channel For Synchronous signals, only four of the ports can be used, leaving another 4 ports as Asynchronous. In the INDEPENDENT mode, each of the 4 Synchronous ports can be up to 64 Kb/s. The rest of the 4 Asynchronous ports, each up to 19.2 Kb/s rate, is assigned a separate 64 Kb/s channel per port. In the MUX mode, the 4 Synchronous ports, each up to 9.6 Kb/s, share a single 64 Kb/s channel. The other 3 Asynchronous ports will be multiplexed to another 64Kb/s channel.
