| SCIENCE BEHIND VASTU |

It is amazing to know that the Vastu principles discussed in our ancient books are built upon solid foundations of science to provide all round prosperity for the dweller. In this article, I will cover the scientific basis behind the core Vastu principles.

The entire life in our Universe is based on the five elements namely Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Sky. These five elements are found everywhere and anywhere. Even our body is composed of these five elements only. When any of these elements happen to be in excess or less in our body, it will result into physical or psychological problems. For example, if Fire element is more, we will get physical problems like high BP, insomnia, ulcers and psychological problems like anger and tensions. When Water element dominates, it leads to laziness, hallucinations, fickle mindedness, obesity and indigestion. Vastu is a science of architecture which is aimed at balancing these five elements.

Understanding

the

elements:

In our solar system, Sun provides life by giving enough light and heat which makes the life possible on Earth. This is the reason our Vedas and Upanishads praised Sun as supreme soul (God). Sun rays travel in the Sky and reach our Earth. Thus the Sky element is the carrier of life energy. Sky element should be enough to carry abundant life force into our house.

Before constructing the house or building, we should take the measurements of the plot or land. The Sky element is 9% of the length and 9% of the breadth around the plot. For a plot with 60 ft length and 50 ft breadth, we should leave around 5.4ft along length and 4.5ft along the breadth as Sky element. The Sky element surrounds the entire house something like a box as shown in the Figure 1. Remember, the actual construction should be done after deducting space for

Sky element. So the actual construction length will be 60-5.4 = 54.6 ft and breadth will be 50-4.5 = 45.5 ft.

We should leave the space for Sky element around the house or building. The Sky element can be kept more by leaving more space around the house or building. In that case, we should leave more space towards East and North directions. It means the house or building should be constructed towards the S-W direction in the plot.

After deducting space for Sky element, only the remaining area (54.6 X 45.5) should be used for actual construction. This area should be divided into 4 equal parts of each 25% as shown in Figure 2. Part1 starting from middle of North till middle of East is represented by Water element. Part2 from middle of East to middle of South represents Fire element. Part3 from middle of South till middle of West represents Earth element. Part4 from middle of West to middle of North represents Air element.

After finding the elements in the plot, the next step is to find the Brahma sthana. Brahma sthana represents the place where lord Brahma the creator resides. It is a mixture of all the 5 elements (Water, Fire, Earth, Air and Sky) since Brahma is the creator for all the 5 elements. Brahma sthana is a rectangular area with 1/3rd of the length and 1/3rd of the breadth in the center. Take the length and breadth of the actual construction area and divide each with 3. In our example, 54.6/3 = 18.2 ft and 45.5/3 = 15.2 ft. So the Brahma sthana in our building will be in the exact center in a rectangular form with 18.2 ft length and 15.2 ft breadth as shown in the Figure 2.

Balancing

the

five

elements:

It is essential to balance these five elements. The Sky element should be 9% of the length and 9% of the breadth. Even if the Sky element is more, there is no

problem. But it should not be less than 9%. Water, Fire, Earth and Air elements should occupy exactly 25% of the construction area. Brahma sthana should be a rectangular area with 1/3rd of the length and 1/3rd of the breadth in the center. This is how these elements should be kept balanced. If any of these elements are deficit or excess then there will be problems to the residents of that house, as shown in the following table: Element Water Fire Earth Air Result if not balanced Losing Gods grace, loss of male children, generation will not continue, draining of all wealth. Quarrels between wife and husband, court litigation, problems to females, getting into debts. Severe and chronic illhealth, accidents, death of owner, problem to eldest child, loss of money due to bad habits and enemies. Loss in business, mind related problems, loss of immovable property and cattle. The subtle energy flow cannot reach, so there will be loss of Gods Sky Brahma sthana grace, unexpected situations, mental problems, possession of spirits or devils. Problems related to stomach, genitals and lower parts of body. Women will face abortions and children will not survive.

1. An element is said to be imbalanced, if the area of the element is extended or reduced. See Figure 3, where South-East corner is extended and hence there is excess of Fire element in that plot. In Figure 4, the South-West corner is cut off and hence there is deficit of Earth element. This is the reason behind the Vastu principle that construction should not be done in plots with irregular shapes like triangle or hexagonal.

Case: Year 2000. A house in Hyderabad, India where S-E block is constructed

protruding out. Hence S-E is dominating. The owner of this house, a Government official has lost his job immediately after the construction of the house. He stays in the house and quarrels with his wife. His wife is soft and noble. Later, I came to know that he applied for divorce from his wife. 2. Since our soul has taken physical form and we live on this material earth, the Earth element can be a little bit raised when compared to other elements. Next to Earth, we can have Fire element a little bit raised and then Air and lastly Water. Since Water naturally flows downwards, Water element can be a bit lowered in the house. It means, when construction is done, the flooring should start at a height of 5 or 6 inches in the N-W and should slowly slope down towards N-E. This applies to flooring as well as to rooms constructed on the terrace. If a room is built on the terrace in the N-W corner, there will not be any problem as the Earth element is raised. But if the room is built in N-E or East side, and the remaining directions are free, then it leads to problems.

In Figure 5, the house has Water and Air elements dominating when compared to the other two elements which results in Vastu problem.

3. When there is no sufficient place around a house or building, it leads to imbalance of Sky element. See Figure 6, where the house is in between two gigantic buildings. The Sky elements of the two buildings overlap the Sky element of the house and hence the people live in that house will face problems.

4. Mixing the opposite elements will lead to chaotic environment. For example, in the Figure 7, kitchen is constructed in the Water element. As kitchen represents Fire, it is being mixed with Water element will cause problems to the residents.

Case: Year 2009. A house at Palakol, India. The toilets are constructed in the N-

E part of the house. When I visited this house, I predicted that the generation will not continue. The owner of the house has two children. The owner died due to illhealth. Later, their daughter died by committing suicide. Recently their son has developed problem in the kidneys and both of his kidneys stopped functioning. N-E is considered as sacred direction because the pranik energy comes from N-E. So, a toilet should never be constructed in N-E or East or North. It should be in South, S-W or West.

Update: The mother has given one of her kidneys to her son. Even if the operation is successful, later complications arised and the boy died at KIMS hospital at Hyderabad, India in June 2010.

5. Brahma sthana which lies in the center of the house should be left free. This means, a pillar or wall should never be laid in the brahma sthana.

Uniform

flow

of

pranik

lines:

The pranik (life) energy which comes from Sun and other planets comprises of various types of energies like magnetic energy, light, thermal energy, gravitational energy and various types of radiations. These energies reach the people live on this earth and influence the parts of their body. For example, scientists found millions of Ferrous Oxide crystals in human brain which are highly influenced by the magnetic and electrical fields. Such magnetic material is also available in the other parts of human body.

The pranik energy enters the house mainly from East, as Sun is the principal source for it. When the house is constructed in alignment to the four main

directions, East, West, North and South, the pranik energy distribution in the house will be uniform. See Figure 8. This will ensure good health to the residents. On the other hand, if the house is constructed in deviation from the main directions, then the pranik energy flow will be uneven and zig- zag. See Figure 9. This leads to health problems both physical and mental. This is the reason why Vastu does not prefer houses facing the corner directions like N-E, SE, S-W or N-W.

BEEJ MANTRA BEEJ MANTRA Tantrik mantras are the ones we call Beeja Mantras ' whereas Vedic Mantras are the ones that are followed under the Vedic system. Every Devi / Devta or Ishth has a particular beej mantra' or the seed letter'. There are beeja-aksharas (seed letters) of different deities, which can be used for this purpose.

Such as, the beeja-akshara for Lord Krishna is Klim , for Goddess Lakshmi it is Shrim , for Lord Ganesha it is Gam and so on. Using this seed letters in a mantra makes the mantra very powerful. Mantras cannot be concocted or tailor-made for the individual, despite some current claims. They have always existed in a latent state as sound energies. Just as gravity was discovered but not invented by Newton, Mantras were revealed to the ancient masters. They have been codified in the scriptures and handed down from guru to disciple.

Neither Mantra, deity nor guru, once chosen, should be changed. There are many paths up the mountain. Perseverance on one alone will bring the aspirant to the top faster than if he were to spread his energies in exploring all the alternative paths. SOME POPULAR BEEJ MANTRAS:

Description - This is also a Mantra of Ganesha Gayatri Mantra: Supreme Mantra Of Vedas NIRGUNA MANTRA : As Saguna Mantras have form, Nirguna Mantras are without form. There are no deities or personalized aspects of God to be invoked. Rather, one uses the abstract Mantras and Vedantic formulas to assert identification with all the creation. The abstract mantra creates a vibration in which the meditator or Sadhak identifies with the whole of the Cosmos. With the repetition of one of these Mantras, the meditator loses his individual identity and merges with nature. He avows that he is identical with that homogeneous substratum, that energy or power of existence, which underlies and permeates all that exists.

All Mantras are hidden in OM , which is the abstract. OM is the manifest symbol of the Sabdabrahaman vibration, or God; but it must not be equated with the Divine. The universe has come from OM, rests in OM and dissolves in it. AUM, as it is sometimes written, covers the threefold experience of man; A represents the physical plane, U represents the mental and astral plane, and M represents the deep sleep state and everything beyond reach of the intellect. Because of its universality, OM can be used as a Mantra by all who are unable to find a guru. However, its very universality and lack of particular form make it very difficult for a beginner to grasp. The mind must be very strong to be able to

concentrate on formless and abstract Mantras such as OM. Correctly pronounced, the sound proceeds from the navel with a deep and harmonious vibration, and gradually manifests itself at the upper part of the nostrils. The larynx and palate are the sounding boards; no part of the tongue or palate is touched. As the U is pronounced, the sound rolls from the root of the tongue to the end of the sounding board of the mouth. M is the last sound, and is produced by closing the lips.

Pronounced merely as spelled OM will have a certain effect upon the nervous system, and will benefit the psyche. Pronounced correctly, it arouses and transforms every atom in the physical body, setting up new vibrations and awakening dormant physical and mental powers. Just as the various deities are aspects of One Supreme, so the various beeja, or seed Mantras are aspects of the supreme Mantra, OM. Beeja Mantras are seed letters directly derived from the fifty primeval sounds, and are very powerful. Generally a beeja Mantra consists of a single letter, although some, such as HREEM , are compounded. The sounds for ether, air, fire, water and earth are, respectively, HAM, YAM, RAM, VAM and LAM. Every deity also has its own deed syllable. Because of their innate force, beeja Mantras generally are not given for initiation. Those who are in a pure state may practice Japa on them, and intricate rituals precede their use.

SOME POPULAR NIRGUNA OR ABSTRACT MANTRAS:

OM Description - There is no translation of OM. It consists of three letters: A, U and M. It signifies the three periods of time, the three states of consciousness and all of existence. A is the waking state, U is the dreaming state, and M is the deep sleep state. OM contains nada and bindu . Nada is the prolonged vowel sound and Bindu is the humming sound, made with closed lips, with which the Mantra ends.

Soham Meaning - I am That I am

Description - The meditator is existence itself. He is without form, without quality, without past, present or future. No bonds or limitations restrict the aspirant who has Soham firmly fixed in his hand.

Aham Brahma Asmi

Meaning - I am Brahma

Description - Aham Brahma Asmi is a great Vedantic formula. The meditator asserts himself to be One with the ever-present Brahma. In doing so, he denies confinement to the body and mind, and affirms unity with the Absolute.

Tat Twam Asi Meaning - That Thou Art Description - "That" is the eternal Brahma, and "thou" is the meditator. Tat Twam Asi , is one of the greatest of the Vedantic statements, identifies the individual as one and the same with Brahma, the Absolute Substratum of Creation. Yantra - For Success and Wealth All ancient cultures had sacred geometric designs representative of their Gods, which had a mantra (or sacred sound vibration) that corresponded to it. In the Vedic culture, we find much power and energy said to be held within sacred geometric symbols. Yantras are not "lucky charms" to be worn or displayed as icons of power in and of themselves. Much specific knowledge and ability must go into their preparation and much dedication and worship is required to achieve the desired effects. Yantra means a "talisman", or "instrument" or " Amulet" or "Kavach" which, if prepared and created by a qualified person as well as utilized under his specific instructions for fruitful results, will help to gain the objector objects of desire or ambition. Although it would not be a difficult task for most of us to copy the form of a Yantra, it would not have the desired effect. Furthermore, to be perfectly honest, it would be all but useless if not created by a qualified person and then "infused" with the specific energy via the medium of mantra. Otherwise, it becomes just an interesting form or picture to look at, but has no real effect on time or circumstances within life. Yantras should always be used on the level. If drawn on paper, the colors preferable are red, orange, yellow or a combination of these. A Yantra without bija mantras is dead. They can be drawn to whatever size is required. In worship they should be placed level on a pedestal or pitha. Before any Yantra is a suitable object for puja, it

must be given life (pranapratishta). A Yantra is essential in every field of your life, to attain success in your profession, to acquire wealth, to win in court cases, to ward off diseases and to progress in meditation. By having a Yantra and keeping it in a sacred place in your house, gazing it everyday can fulfill your desires and help in attaining your goals. It is auspicious to see the Yantra daily in the morning and one should lit incense/dhoop or lamp with ghee before the Yantra every morning. By doing this, native is blessed with success and wealth. Yantra is the use of certain external objects, symbols or some mechanical means to worship the divine. The act of folding of hands in front of the deity is but a kind of yantra only. The manner in which a fireplace is built for the performance of some Vedic sacrifice, the method in which the place is prepared and the materials (sambhra) are assembled, the manner in which the oblations are poured into the fire, the way the priests sit around the altar, and in fact the very act of chanting of the mantras with mechanical precision form part of yantric worship only. The very design of the temple as an outer symbol of the existence of the Divine on the material plane, the act of visiting the temple, circling around the temple, entering the temple, the lighting of the lamps in front of the divine, the decorations and the ornamentation so characteristic of Hindu temples and places of worship, the manner in which the images are built and installed, the lighting of the lamps, the offerings, the method of worship, the partaking of prasad, and in short any practice that is mechanical, symbolic and ritualistic to a degree, form part of this approach only. RULES WHILE CHANTING OF MANTRAS 1 Have complete devotion and faith in the Mantra. Repose your complete faith in the deity being worshipped. 2 Keep a peaceful mind. It is better to chant for 5 minutes with full concentration than to chant for one hour while disturbed. 3 While chanting of Mantras never let your mind be distracted (concentrate deeply). 4 Put your complete will power in the chanting of Mantra. 5 Never change your place before completion of your Mantra chanting. 6 From the beginning to the end of the chanting of Mantra, do not change incense (Dhoop), lamp (Deepak), asana, rosary (Mala) and clothes. 7 While chanting of Mantra, keep non-vegetarian food and liquor strictly away from your house. 8 After bathing and with complete purity perform the chanting of Mantra. 9 Never use Mantra power or attainment for negative purposes.

10 It is best to find a quiet time and a place to chant. While chanting of Mantras all the above precautions should be taken special care of. At the same time, always undertake Sankalpa at the starting of the chanting of Mantra and receive its results at the end of the chanting of Mantra.

Elements in Yantra The world is composed of five elements Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Sky. In Yantras, where lines are used with the basic concept of Bindu or point, all these elements are used particularly Earth, Water and Fire. Yantras are rectangular and of Water element are round whereas that of Fire are Triangular. Triangular Yantra when is of raised lines indicates Lord SHIVA'S Yantra and when is of Carved lines denotes of BHAGWATI Yantra. Following five elements Yantra indicate specific use, which are to be memorised by the Sadhaka. 1. Prithvi Tatva These Yantras bestow contentment, comforts, ambitions and success. 2. Jal Tatva These Yantras bless the native with respect, Love, Contentment, removes restlessness, Smoothness, affection in life and wisdom. These Yantras are helpful in gaining respect, success, avert failures and troubles etc. These Yantras stand for difficulties, disrespect, unintelligence, etc and they increase such instincts and attract the users to vices. Types of Yantra There are different types of Yantras for different purposes. They can help you to attain success in your business, bring the person under your control, and bring wealth and prosperity to you. The Yantras have to be purified and energized before using it. Yantras energized during the nights of Maha Shivratri, Holi and Diwali are most effective and powerful. Normally the related Mantras are also chanted in the presence of the Yantras for quick results.

3. Agni Tatva 4. Vaayu Tatva

5. Aakash Tatva

According to Shastras, Yantras are divided into Seven types which are used accordingly. 1. Sharir Yantra There are six chakras in the body, through which Kundalini is awakened. There are

specific Yantras for each Chakra, which are worn or used accordingly. Each Yantra carries separate mantras, which if recited, indicates different gains. These are called Sharir Yantras. 2. Dharn Yantra As the name indicates, these Yantras are worn on different parts of the body for specific use. They bestow the results when used accordingly. There are several such Yantras and methods. 3. Asan Yantra Such Yantras are kept under Aasna at the time of Sadhana. These bears fruits early than other Yantras. These Yantras are placed in temples, in the foundation of houses, used as Devas. Such Yantras are kept under every Deva for early good results. 4. Mandal Yantra In this the Sadhakas are made to sit in the shape of Yantras itself. Nine persons take part in it. One sits in the centre, four persons in four directions and others recite other mantras. The Sadhana with this Yanra bears fruit early.
5. Pooja Yantra

These Yantras are installed in temples and Pooja is performed. Actually these Yantras are of a different devas. Such Yantras are installed in many ways namely:A. While installing the idols of Devas, the Yantras are written in digits and accordingly while performing pooja, the names of respective Devas are recited. The Muslims write 786, which is a digital Yantra for the word "Bisam Allah". B. In Yantra, the name of Deva is written in the centre and pooja is performed. C. Some Yantras are prepared while writing the mantras. In such case, we write full mantras somewhere, at other place the first words of mantras are written, whereas in other cases we write Beej mantras only. D. On some yantras the photos of Devas and Devi etc are pasted or drawn and pooja is performed. In Such yantras colours are used in the pictures of Devas etc. 6. Chhatar Yantra The above yantras enumerated at Serial 1 to 5 are written at the place where you sit, on at the roof top, on the Skull etc and are Called Chhatar Yantras. These yantras are kept under turbon, hat, or in a Cloth which is kept always with the man as towel etc or be kept in a pocket. 7. Darshan Yantras These are yantras, which are if seen by the Sadhaka, he is benefited. Or the place where these are installed or worn, blesses the native with Success. In India, there are places where purified yantras are installed and those places are very powerful to mitigate the troubles and evils of the people if pooja is performed there. In temples of Jagan Nath Puri, Ishairon Yantra and in Shri Nath Dwar, Sudarshan yantra etc. is installed. But the above yantras should be written in a methodical way, following the right directions, material etc.

Gayatri Mantra: Supreme Mantra Of Vedas SAGUNA MANTRAS: Mantras used by spiritual aspirants to achieve God- Realization are called deity Mantras . They are Saguna , with qualities or form producing, and aid the conceptualisation process, just as do visual symbols. In time, recitation gives rise to the actual form of the particular deity. As a specialized sound body of consciousness, the Mantra is the deity itself. The form of the deity manifests as the visible portion of the sound. The Mantra, therefore, must be repeated in the proper way, with attention to the syllables and rhythm. If translated, it ceases to be a Mantra because sound vibrations newly created in translation cannot evoke it. Only the rhythmical vibrations of the Sanskrit syllables properly recited can regulate the unsteady vibrations of the worshipper and permit the form of the deity to arise. Every true Mantra fulfils six conditions. It was originally revealed to the sage, who achieved Self-Realization through it and passed it down to others. It has a presiding deity and A specific meter. It possesses a beeja , or seed, investing it with a special power that is the essence of the Mantra. It also has dynamic divine power, or shakti . Lastly, there is a plug that conceals the pure consciousness hidden in the Mantra. As soon as the plug is removed by constant prolonged repetition, pure consciousness is revealed, and the devotee receives the vision of his deity. At the time of initiation by a guru, one's deity or ishta devata is chosen. Every person has worshipped some deity in previous lives; the impression of this worship is imprinted in the subconscious mind. These impressions have influenced the mental vibrations and have helped to form the particular mentality. If one cannot discover his own natural inclination, the guru will choose the deity in accordance with his insight. Once the deity and appropriate Mantra have been selected, and the aspirant has received initiation, he works with the Mantra until reaching enlightenment.

Other deity Mantras can also be used in a supplementary way, such as foe acquiring particular attributes. Repetition of OM Aim Saraswatyai Namah bestows wisdom, intelligence and creative achievement. OM Sri Maha Lakshmyai Namah confers wealth and prosperity. The Ganesha Mantra removes obstacles in any undertaking. The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra prevents accidents, incurable disease and calamities, and bestows longevity and immortality. It is also a moksha Mantra, bringing liberation.

The Gayatri Mantra is the supreme Mantra of the Vedas. It is the one Mantra that can be commonly prescribed for all, for Maa Gayatri is the Mother of the universe, Shakti herself, and there is nothing she cannot do. Her Mantra purifies the mind; destroys pain, sin and ignorance; brings liberation; and bestows health, beauty, strength, vitality, power, intelligence and magnetic aura. Repetition of the Gayatri Mantra, OM Namah Sivaya, OM Namo Narayanaya, or OM Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 125000 times, with feeling, faith, and devotion secures for the devotee the grace of the presiding deity.
