News refers to important or unusual events or happening

NEWS --- North East West South meaning it comes from all directions, its all over us It is a report on anything that happens, particularly to people, places and things It is information that has meaning for readers, and is based on facts and interest of the readers

Timeliness or recency (very recent) Oddity unusual, rare, or uncommon (when a dog bites a man, its not news, but when a man bites a dog, thats news) Prominence important or significant persons, places, things, or situations Conflict struggle whether physical or mental (how school children struggled to solve problem like waste disposal, safety at home and in school, help for the indigents or flood victims or prevention of drug abuse will constitute news Human interest event must have happened to people and must appeal not only to the emotions, but to instinct, as well and must arouse definite feelings like jy, sorrow, pity or amusement

The most important facts in the news are contained in the first paragraph, called the LEAD It answers the basic questions of WHO, WHEN, WHERE, WHAT, WHY and HOW It is a summary of the entire news
