Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: Enlightenment Thinkers Content Area: Social Studies

10.2.1- The comparing and contrasting major philosopher and their effects on the democratic revolution in England, France, U.S. and Latin America (e.g. John Locke, Montesquieu, Jean Jacques, Rousseau, Simon Bolivar, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison).
Big Ideas:

What ideas where so revolutionary at the time of their conception? Why where they revolutionary? How have these ideas influ enced our world today? Why was the world stage waiting for these ideas to take place?

Unit Goals and Objectives:

At the end of the week a student will be able to explain about the 4 most important enlightened thinker and their ideals. At the end of the session the student will be able to recall how revolutionary ideas manifested themselves in the revolutions in Eng land, France, Latin America, and the U.S. At the end of the unit a student will be able to compare and contrast the mentality of intellectuals before and after the Enlightenment.

Unit Summary: This unit will teach the students the true ideals of the enlightenment thinkers and how those ideals manifested in the revolutions at the time period. They will use worksheets as well as group projects to show their understanding to the class as well as to make sure they themselves use the knowledge. We can call on primary documents and evidence to show the influence of each of the main contributors stated above.

Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: KWL chart: The class will do a KWL chart to try and show what they remember about the previous unit, tying it into the current political climate, and how that might affect the upcoming unit. Formative: 4 assignments to help with the understanding of the students understanding of the unit. A simple online quiz, A matching worksheet, A web tie to tie the thinkers to their advancements in the Enlightenment, as well as the group discussion during the prezi. Summative: Two different items are used. First is a group poster project. The posters can be used to determine the understanding each student has for the enlightenment. The second is a persuasive 3 page paper. The students have to convince the presenter that a certain philosopher is greater than all the others ones, and that his ideals are still important to this day.

Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective:

At the end of the session the student will be able to recall how revolutionary ideas manifested themselves in the revolutions in England, France, Latin America, and the U.S.
Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective:

Acceptable Evidence: The student will be able to write a 3 page paper on how each revolution reflected ideals from the Enlightenment thinkers.

Lesson Activities: Teacher Lecture with guided notes through PowerPoint. Students can pick out key enlightenment concepts and ask teacher how they appear in revolutions. Teacher explains while students take notes and tie it onto a Drawn-up Web tied to the different locations of revolutions.

At the end of the week a student will be able to explain about the 4 most important enlightened thinker and their ideals.

Acceptable Evidence: The student will be able to pass a 3 question multiple choice test biased off of the ideals of John Locke, Montesquieu, Jean Jacques, Rousseau, Simon Bolivar, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison. Acceptable Evidence: Students will turn in a digital before and after slide show of ideals before and after the enlightenment.

Lesson Activities: Students will pair off to go through a match the correct ideals to philosopher worksheet. As well as making a presentation on a certain philosopher helping to teach the rest of the class the ideals they thought up.

Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective:

At the end of the unit a student will be able to compare and contrast the mentality of intellectuals before and after the Enlightenment.

Lesson Activities: Students will be split into small groups and made to create a digital either power point or before and after slide show or diagram to show to class their knowledge about the importance the enlightenment did to the average person.
