SimpIe Present used for future
Simple present for present tense habitual:
The boat crosses the river.
When we use it for future tense, we add an
adverbial to indicate a future scheduled event.
The boat crosses the river next week.
The party begins at 7 p.m.
Present Progressive used for future
Present progressive for present tense:
am taking my vacation.
When we use it for future tense we add an
adverbial to indicate a future scheduled event:
am taking my vacation next week.
We are finishing the class next Thursday.
So What's the Difference????
go to school tomorrow.
am going to school tomorrow.
The simple present indicates an event that is a
fixed arrangement.
The present progressive indicates less formality
and perhaps a one time or first time event.

The class will go to the movie this semester (because
thats what normally happens but it hasn't been
discussed)-prediction without evidence
The class is going to go to a movie (They haven't
decided yet when or which one) planned but not
arranged
The class goes to the movies this Saturday (t is a
scheduled event that happens regularly)
The class is going to the movie this Saturday (They
have bought their tickets already and this is a one time
event)-arranged
Each one is correct but has a different meaning
Categories of meanings for different
verb forms:
Predictions=will
The actress will be 40 next year
nformal predictions=be going to
The actress is going to be 40 next year
Unarranged intentions=be going to
The class is going to the theatre on Sunday. (plans that have been decided but
not arranged)
Scheduled events=simple present
The new release comes out this summer.
Arranged plans=present progressive
Tom Cruise is playing the role in the film.
Matching Activity
Work together in groups of 3 or 4

of its meaning.

After writing one sentence, compare your

identify all the future tense verbs and assign
them a category for meaning as follows:
