PROJECT UNIT NO. PROBLEM

KOTHAGUDAM TPS -2X250 MW 10 HYDRAULIC GOVERNOR CONTROL PROBLEM

PROBLEM:
During first rolling of the turbine, Hydraulic Governor could not control the machine speed. Primary oil (speed sensing oil) pressure was not building up corresponding to 3000 rpm. The primary oil pressure was only 1.2 Kg/sq.cm. as against the minimum required pressure of 2.3 Kg/sq.cm.

ANALYSIS:

Entire primary oil system i.e. Bellows, piping, supply orifices, governor impeller, sealing rings, venting arrangement suction chamber etc., were checked for leakage and hocking and found to be normal.

Governor impeller is a fabricated component at works. Entry of oil is through 3.65 mm annular semicircular ring as shown in the sketch. This can not be measured from outside without cut opening of the ring at both ends. Same was checked and the gap was measured to be only between 1.8 to 2.4 mm against 3.65 mm.

MODIFICATION: The entry clearance was increased to 3.65 mm. Entry pipe cover portion was adjusted for smooth oil entry.

CONCLUSION: Machine was run to 3000 rpm. Primary oil pressure has improved to 2.3 Kg/sq.cm and governor control on speed established. In unit-9 the primary oil pressure is limited to 1.8 kg/cm2, probably due to the above discrepancy. Even though operational problems are not experienced since long, but recently the unit experienced overspeed during load throw off. The modification as done in Unit-10 is suggested for Unit-9 also which is to be implemented during next available shut down opportunity.
