CONFIRMATION HANDBOOK

Revised 6/2013vr

1REV 6\21\2013vr

What is Confirmation?
In the Rite of confirmation, young people publicly confess their faith, celebrate the promises of their baptism and begin to identify with and become involved in the adult Christian community. Confirmation instruction is a team effort, involving parents, pastors and staff, and the educational ministry of the church in the preparation of Confirmands for this important transition. It is the continuing responsibility of the parents and sponsors who made a promise on the day of the youths baptism: to provide for his/her instruction in the Christian faith. Confirmation begins at baptism when God claims us as His children and ends when we join our Savior in heaven. The Rite of Confirmation is in no way a graduation from Christian education and growth in faith, but a step along our journey of faith. God has entrusted the spiritual instruction of children to parents. Confirmation instruction is a supplement to not a substitute forthis duty. The basic responsibility continues to be with the parents or guardians (not the instructor or the church) to see that young people receive and participate in this educational process.

Basis for Trinitys Confirmation program

Our Confirmation ministry is based on the command of Jesus, Go, and make disciplesteaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28.19-20) Confirmation instruction is one of the ways we obey Jesus command to teach the Christian faith. God gave us this command out of love for us. We, too, love our children. We desire that our youth have the best in life. We believe that they cannot have the best if they lack faith in Jesus Christ. We offer our prayers, our encouragement, our faith, so that they may have the best in lifea personal relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ! The Confirmation program at Trinity is about providing opportunities for youth and families to grow in a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. That is the foundation of our program. To achieve this goal we have a program made up of different class modules and requirements. It also involves family participation, which is vital in a childs faith journey. Our program offers a family the choices and flexibility of going at their own pace to complete the program while placing a high value on commitment and follow through.

Trinitys Confirmation Program

Our Confirmation Program design provides flexibility and accountability. Classes are not separated by grade, although there are some classes available only in their final year of study and only for specific grade levels. If a family wants to complete the Confirmation program in three years then it is necessary to participate in all the Required Class Modules scheduled per year and pace the other needed Modules. As a result, in their final year, they can focus on personal declaration and some deeper questions. For final-year Confirmation students the Alpha module and Cornerstone retreat (retreat under development) will help them understand what it means to dedicate their lives to God, in a personal way. Upon completion of this final year and all requirements, students participate in the public Rite of Confirmation.

Modules
Luthers Catechism, along with supplemental subjects, are studied in modules. Each module is 3-6 weeks long. We will offer at least five modules per year (September May). Modules are taught on Sunday mornings 945-1045a. As teacher schedules allow, there will be courses offered during alternative times posted on the Youth Board in the Narthex, Church Newsletter and Bulletin, Email/Text/ Facebook notification. Alternative times will include, but not limited to, summer intensives for a weeks duration, Saturday and Wednesday options. [Alternative scheduling at the discretion of the Pastor and Youth Director] Categories of Modules include the following: Required, Elective, Action, Retreat, and Independent. All modules must be successfully completed with less than 2 absences, along with any scheduled memory work in order to receive credit for that module.

To be Confirmed 16 Required Modules, 2 Elective Modules, 6 Action Modules, and 3 Retreats Modules must be successfully completed.

Required: Students must complete 16 Required Modules. Family Courses require at least one parent to participate in all classes with student. Memory work for many Required Modules will be assigned. Elective: Complete 2 Elective Modules. A variety of topics and interests are scheduled at various times throughout the year. Topics not limited to those listed in the class descriptions. Not all courses offered every year. Action: Spiritual disciplines help us live an active faith; active worship attendance, being in Gods Word, prayer, accountability and serving. All Action Modules must be completed 3 weeks prior to the Rite of Confirmation. Retreat: Attend at least 3 Retreats from the listed choices. Independent Modules: IMs offer flexibility with your schedule and provide you with additional choices. IMs can be taken to either makeup a course, get ahead in your study schedule or take a family-approach in completion of the program. There are both Required and Elective courses offered as IM.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENTS AND CONFIRMANDS TO TRACK THEIR OWN PROGRESS
Each student will have a folder kept in the Youth Directors office with an active check off sheet. As items are turned in, the Youth Director or Office Assistant will check off any completed materials. Youth will not be reminded to turn in required items. Parents and Youth may examine the contents of their folder at any time.
3REV 6\21\2013vr

Knowledge of course content

Students should display adequate knowledge of the content of the course through the completion of memory work, all homework, and an occasional quiz in certain modules.

Registration
Will begin in July. Forms will be available on the Youth Board in the Narthex. An Intro Meeting for parents and new students is required. A packet containing schedules, required Health History form, and other information will be given at this meeting. Returning students will be offered a program refresher class.

Parents Participation
Since the primary responsibility for Christian nurture rests with the parents or guardians, it is important that they be actively involved in Confirmation instruction. The reality: No matter what we teach at Trinity, students are more likely to carry with them what the family teaches. Our prayer as students grow through the Confirmation program they will grow to take on more ownership of their faith education, but parents help them along the way. These young people will take their cues from you. If parents do not Worship consistently, your students will not understand its importance either. Some Modules noted as Family Courses require at least one parent to attend with their student. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend any class sessions. Parents also offer invaluable support by daily PRAYING for their son or daughter, by KEEPING IN TOUCH with the staff and discussing any problems as soon as they arise, and by cooperating with the DISCIPLINE POLICY and working with the student to solve any discipline problems. Occasionally students will receive questions and topics to discuss with their families. Parents can encourage students in completing these assignments by choosing a particular time each week for discussion. Above all, it is important that parents set an example for their children in Worship, Bible Study, prayer, and personal and family time with God. Studies show that a parents example has more impact on a young persons faith than any other factor. Vicki Ribar is able to provide you with materials, support, and training for your family regarding these disciplines. Our prayer is that you will also commit to learning more about who God is and invest in your relationship with Him! What would you like to be learning over the next 3 years? How do you desire to grow? What elements in your spiritual health could be improved or focused on. The example you set as you invest in your faith will affect your child!

Parents Involvement Opportunities:

There are many different ways Parents can be involved in the Confirmation program outside of attending class with your student. If you are interested in any of the following areas, please contact Vicki Ribar. Retreat Mentor Attend a retreat as an adult caring for students. Some retreats allow adults to attend at no cost or at a lower rate (number of adults spots may be limited) Coffee Hour Once a month assign needed food donations, oversee the kitchen operation and clean up so teachers may get to their class on time Fundraiser Team Work on a board to arrange and record data for Retreats, Mission Trips, and other Event fundraisers Office Assistant Work with Vicki to keep students folders up to date and assist with special projects.

Materials
Each student needs a Lutheran Study Bible, which contains Luthers Small Catechism. Bring a pen or pencil to each class Bring their Confirmation backpack each week to increase the odds of assignments and materials making to class. PLEASE WRITE NAME ON BACKPACK. Each student will receive ONE backpack and Bible during their 3 years this cost is part of the yearly fee.

Cost
There are varying costs relating to the Confirmation program. $25 each year, will help cover a Bible, Backpack (one each given during first year), other classroom materials for the required modules, Rite of Confirmation stoles and flowers. This also helps us offset some of the retreat costs. Retreats: Costs vary depending on the retreat(s) that you choose to do. For a list of those costs look under the Retreat Module section for descriptions. If cost is an issue for your family for this program or for the retreats, please see Vicki Ribar. We do not want cost to be an issue for someone not being involved.

Attendance
Class attendance is not an optional part of this program. Each student is responsible for attending each class session for which he has signed up. With different choices of classes offered, it is up to the student to schedule classes around their other commitments. If the student and parent decide to make other commitments, it will take longer to complete the Confirmation program. If a student misses one class session, he is responsible for contacting the teacher to arrange for completing the work done in that class session. If a student misbehaves during a session and asked to leave, it will count as an absence. If a student misses two classes during a module session, he will need to take the class again at a later session.

The Confirmation Program at Trinity requires a commitment from both student

Worship
The Worship of God flows from a living faith. Worship is the primary time to gather as a family of God and encourage each other in our life of faith.

Completion of Requirements
In order to be confirmed a student must successfully complete 24 total Modules and 3 Retreats. These will be completed Sunday mornings 945-1045a, during Independent Study Modules, and during other specially scheduled times/dates. Once these pieces are completed and a student has been able to express their faith in a Confirmation Interview they will be able participate in the Rites of Confirmation (October).

Confirmation Celebration (COMING SOON!)

Coffee and refreshments, sponsored by the other students/families in the Confirmation Program, this special time will include a celebration of their commitment, some reflections of their Confirmation experience and an opportunity to meet and talk with other members of the congregation.

Rite of Confirmation
In October, on Reformation Day, the Rite of Confirmation will seek to guide each student to make a meaningful, deliberate step forward in being disciple of Jesus Christ. Parents, family, friends and baptismal sponsors have the opportunity to participate in and observe the service. Parents will write and speak a special blessing over their child at the Altar at this service. Families will choose a Confirmation Verse that is meaningful to them. In addition, confirmands will express their faith in a banner project completed as a family and displayed a week before the Rite and for a few weeks after for the congregation to celebrate.

Behavior Expectations
RESPECT ONE ANOTHER
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4.7-8

RESPECT YOUR LEADERS

Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. Hebrews 13.17

RESPECT THIS PLACE I love the house where you love, O Lord, the place where your glory dwells. Ps 26.8 If a student engages in inappropriate and disruptive behavior, they will receive a verbal warning. If behavior continues, removal from that class and no attendance credit for that class session given.

Action Modules
The Action Module is based on spiritual disciplines, which help us live an active faith. These actions are based in active worship attendance, being in Gods Word, prayer, accountability and serving. All of these pieces need to be completed 3 weeks prior to the Rite of Confirmation. 400 Sermon Notes Jesus spent a lot of time listening to His Father. We have the opportunity each Sunday to listen to what God has to say to us and apply it to our lives. 30 Sermon Notes total are required as part of Trinity's Confirmation program. These sermon notes can be completed at any Wednesday, Saturday, or Sunday service, any special worship service, or at a church where you are visiting. If you take notes at another church you must turn in the sermon note form and the bulletin from that service. In order to get credit for the completion of a sermon summary all information asked for on the sermon summary form must be completed. If there are blanks on the sermon note sheet, the sheet will be returned to complete. Sermon Note Forms are available on the Youth Board in the Narthex 401 Servant Events Jesus not only told us to love our neighbors, He modeled His entire life after serving others. Servanthood is a way Christians respond to the redeeming love Christ has shown for us. The blessing of serving others is a sign of spiritual maturity and devotion. Serving has also been commanded by Jesus. Participation in the Confirmation program requires the student to complete 30 servant hours that benefit people outside of their family or go on a mission trip. When a student conducts some type of service they are to fill out a servant event form and turn it in. Students need to participate in at least 2 different types of service (ie:Nursery and Soup Kitchen. Not all hours can be completed by working in the Nursery). They can be done anywhere as long as they arent paid or serving family members. Servant Event Forms are available on the Youth Board in the Narthex Some opportunities are listed below: Sunday morning Nursery Assistant Projectionist Lawn Care/Snow Clearing with Family Help Michelle with Sunday School plays Sunday School Special Events volunteer Office volunteer folding Bulletins/Newsletters in Summer Run games during Sunday School Fall Fest and Spring Eggstravaganza Misc office projects scheduled with Vicki
