Freedom fighters job quota extends to their grandchildren

The 30 percent quota of government jobs for freedom fighters would be extended to their grand children. The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting, last of the year 2010, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday. Briefing newsmen after the meeting at the PID conference room, PMs press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the grand daughters and sons of the freedom fighters will get the quota benefit in the jobs of government, semi-government, autonomous/ semi-autonomous organizations and institutions and corporations when no eligible freedom fighter and their offspring will be available. The cabinet meeting approved the draft of the Children Bill with the objective of ensuring safe and prosperous future of the children. All of 18 years old will be considered children. A childrens welfare board will also be set up under the proposed law. Other agenda discussed at the cabinet meeting were Financial Reporting Bill and proposal to increase allowances for the freedom fighters having awards as the members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces.

A committee headed by Dr Mashiur Rahman, Finance Adviser to PM, will finalize the draft of the Financial Reporting Bill He is to select other members of the committee. Under the proposed bill, a council will be formed to ensure smooth and objective financial reports of various financial institutions. About the allowances for the freedom fighters having award in the Armed Forces, the proposal has been postponed until finalization of the report taking into it award holders in the police force. The cabinet meeting also approved a proposal to extend the present law prohibiting felling of forest trees by another five years. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the ministries and departments to put all information updates about the governments various development projects on its websites for the larger interests of the journalists which will help them to write reports on the government activities in the last two years. -BNN
