Board Meeting: Night started with a listening session. This is not included in the Boards meeting agenda.

How Listening Time works: There is a facilitator from the school board that rotates as the facilitator. Community members that want to speak may do so with a form that indicates who they are, subject matter, and gives them a time limit of 15 minutes. Listening Session 6:00 Patsy Green was the facilitator. Lori Simon, Tia Claussen (Communications Director), Stephanie Crosby, Mike Favor (Cooper Principal), Gayle Wakoviak, Aldo Sicoli (Superintendent), were in attendance. Other board members, many parents, students, and outside stakeholders were in the audience. Tonight was a contentious night. The IB directors position was cut and being combined with another position at Cooper High School. Patsy Green announced that parents stay professional and not mention names so we dont break data privacy. Parents and Students problem was presented as one of lacking communication and input from people directly affected. Their concern is that the IB program will not be the same when the duties of MYP and IB are combined. The only time people said they were informed was when the IB Coordinator resigned. The district spokesperson said that we do not have a practice of notifying parents of coordinator programs. We were following our standard practice. You werent slighted or treated better than other programs. Communication has not been neglected but it could have been better. IB has been overstaffed in general so we are considering that. Mike Favor, the principal of Cooper High School said, I believe I could have done some things better. We havent met the world mark. We put together a program where we are at our best. She will put the focus back in the program, and will have clerical support. We are still working through that. Another comment from our Communications Director was, You never hear anyone say you over communicated. Aldo Siccoli said, I have full confidence in Mr. Favors decision. Things will be getting better. Mr. Favor is outstanding with staffing. Students spoke and were thanked for their voices, Mike Favor said that he was proud of them for standing up for what they believe in. Patsy concluded this topic concluding that the IB program is going to stay in a great place.

The next topic was on Common Core Standards presented by a former band teacher in the district and parent of children in the district. Her issue was that she is very concerned with the entire Common Core Standards system. 20 states adopted the English program site unseen. This takes it out of the local hands. It is unproven, untested, not international, and is intellectually undemanding. What happened to fiction that fosters the love of Reading. We are moving to 70% informational packets, 30% will be classical literature. Test scores have gone down in Math. History will be studied in English language packets. 3rd parties are assessed and tracked at the federal level. She continued, there has been no thorough cost analysis, no textbooks, it will be all computer. Hand scoring will cost $100.00 per student per year. 25 states are repealing/reversing the process. We are going to be using scripted lesson plans and value added teacher evaluations. Gayle Walkoviak said that, There is quite a bit on common core. There isnt anything discerning yet. We have personell make decisions about curriculum. We are mapping backward from the students 1st college year. This is done by the State of MN. Many students are not equipped with non-fiction text. Aldo Sicoli said, It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Common core curriculum is highly indoctrinated. New Yorkers are irate. Talk to representatives, and take it back to lobbying. This concluded the listening session. Role was called for the Board Meeting.
