KVA UPS SYSTEMS

SUMMARY The Inverter Base Drive Assembly Cards in 3 & 4 kVA Cyberex UPS systems have some undersized components. These components are likely to fail under certain operating conditions which can cause an abrupt failure of the entire UPS system. The Inverter Base Drive Cards in all such UPS systems should be replaced as soon as possible. BACKGROUND CSD recently investigated the causes of Inverter Base Drive Card failures in a 3 kVA Cyberex UPS system at Pressure Reducing Station #1 (PRS-1) on East-West Pipeline. Failure analysis has indicated that Resistors R1 & R8 and Zener Diodes D1 are undersized. These components have less than the required wattage rating. Cyberex has agreed to modify the Inverter Base Drive Cards and has volunteered to supply the required number of new cards to Saudi Aramco, at no charge. RECOMMENDATIONS CSD recommends that all four (4) Inverter Base Drive Cards be replaced on all 3 & 4 kVA UPS systems manufactured by Cyberex. Refer to attachment #1 for a list of models affected by this engineering change. If your plant has any of the subject UPS systems, please contact M.T. The Inverter Base Drive Cards for the following Cyberex UPS systems should be replaced as soon as possible. All previous revisions of Inverter Base Drive Cards, Cyberex Part #41-01-290902, Revisions A or B, should be replaced with modified cards marked as Revision #D/C.
