9467 Self Assessment Worksheet

Directions: I just recently completed a lesson on post-secondary education options with 75 freshmen taking career management. Each pair of students was to research five different examples of programs for certificate programs, diploma programs, associates degrees, bachelor degrees, masters degrees, and doctoral degrees. Each student was then assigned to set short-term, middle-term, and long-term goals toward the post-secondary education option they think they might pursue. Then, each student was asked to complete a graduation checklist in pursuit of achieving each of his or her goals. Throughout the direct instruction, activities, cooperative learning, etc., I felt as though the majority of the lesson was being retained, and this was proven successful after an objective, multiplechoice formative assessment. However, when I performed a class discussion about what the students were actually planning to pursue, it was apparent that their understanding of the difference between post-secondary education options was inept. Learning Situation: Characteristics of Meaningful Learning Active Learning Rating (1=low; 5= high) 1 2 3 4 5 Example Learners explored and manipulated the components and parameters of technology-based environments by researching various college websites and utilizing careercruising.com. Students observed the results of their activities. Learners articulated what they know by defining five examples of each postsecondary education option and learned and reflected on their meanings and importance. Learners were assigned their goals and the regulation and management of their activities were completed by the Instructor. The real-world problem in this situation is that each student is looking to plan his/her future by researching different post-secondary education options and setting achievable goals to pursue an option. Learners collaborated with other students and socially negotiated the meaning of each post-secondary education option.

Summary and Reflection Questions: Which one dimension of meaningful learning do you believe is the strongest in the situation you selected? Why? (one paragraph) In this learning environment I would say cooperative learning was the strongest dimension of learning. The activity was designed to foster a cooperative learning environment so each student would need his partner to complete the postsecondary education research and then work cooperatively with all groups to assist in creating short-term, middle-term, and long-term goals. Not all groups created the same type of research but all had the same data. This reinforced the idea that there are many different post-secondary education options. Which one dimension of meaningful learning do you believe is the weakest in the situation you selected? Why? (one paragraph) I think that the Active Learning dimension is my weakest area in this lesson. Since my students are reading about concepts and then discussing them they are not really getting a lot of hands on opportunities in this particular lesson. They are getting to write down examples of each post-secondary education option, but I dont think in the way they are very hands on. Which technologies could be used to enhance learning in the situation you selected? How? Why? (two paragraphs) While we used the Internet, looking back, I do believe that concept map software would have helped with making the lessons more concrete and hands on. The concept map software could have allowed the students to lay the post-secondary education information out visually to help the students see it more clearly and better understand it.
