1. (a) Draw the close packed planes and directions in simple cube, BCC and FCC
crystals and find out the Miller indices of the planes. [10]
(b) Explain briefly about the various types of crystal imperfections, with the help
of neat sketches. [10]

2. (a) What is allotrophy? Explain with suitable examples? [8]


(b) Distinguish between crystal structure microstructure and macrostructure give
examples. [12]

3. (a) Distinguish between (i) Terminal phase (ii) intermediate phase. [5]
(b) Draw a binary phase diagram where in two components are completely solu-
ble in liquid state but only partly soluble in solid state. Label the important
points; lines and phases in it. Explain the solifidication process of a hypoeu-
tectic alloy. [15]

4. (a) What is equivalent carbon in cast irons? What is the significance of equivalent
carbon? [10]
(b) Which factors affect the properties of a gray cast iron? How are they controlled
to obtain optimum properties? [10]

5. (a) What are the limitations of Austempering? [5×4=20]


(b) What are the limitations of Martempering?
(c) ‘Normalized steels are stronger than annealed steels’. Explain.
