Graha Shri B.V.

Raman's Kala Sarpa Yoga

APPENDIX I : A NOTE ON KALA SARPA YOGA by B.V. Raman (bold/italics applied by B.P. Lama)

[begin direct quote] "Kalasarpa Yoga (KSY) is said to be formed if All the planets are situated between Rahu and Kethu. The results are that countries and rulers are destroyedand people become afflicted.

Strictly speaking, KSY does not find a place in the classical astrological literature. How this yoga gained currency and gathered a sinister meaning is not clear. I propose to make a few observations in the light Of my own humble experience and it is left to the discretion of the readers to accept them for what The y are worth.

All Graha between Ketu and Rahu?

The definition of KSY given above generally holds good.

But what if all the planets are hemmed in between Kethu and Rahu ?

According to some, his does not constitute KSY. But in our view irrespective of whether the planets are between Rahu and Kethu, or Kethu and Rahu, the yoga technically exists. But in conferring results several variations are possible. The general belief is that KSY is evil, restraining all the other good yogas present in the horoscope, and that those having the yoga will have set-backs and reverses in life. It is also feared that Kalasarpa Yoga is capable of nullifying the most powerful Dhana-yogas, rendering a rich man poor.

In interpreting Kalasarpa Yoga, consideration should be given to the houses which are mainly involved, e.g.,

1st and 7th, 2nd and 8th, 3rd and 9th, 4th and 10th, 5th and 11th, 6th and 12th, etc.

In each case the results could be different, depending upon a number of other horoscopic factors.

KSY on the 6th-12th axis

Generally it is found, other combinations warranting, The 6th-12th axis (i.e., Kalasarpa Yoga) could indicateincarceration, or spiritual elevation, depending upon the presence or absence of powerful Bandhana Yogas.

KSY on the 1st-7th axis

If the axis involves the 1st and 7th houses,it is not good for marital happiness. o The marital life may become oppressive and marred by frequent clashes and want of understanding. If the 7th lord Or Venus is strongly placed and well disposed then The evil results should not be predicted. The marital troubles can be avoided.

Knowing in advance, the implications of this yoga, one can regulate one's thinking and behavior and develop an understanding.

KSY on the 4th-10th axis

Likewise if the houses involved are the 4th and 10th, o setbacks may mark one's career unless the 10th house or the 10th lord is strong and well placed.

KSY has its bright shades.

o o

It makes one industrious, hard-working, aware of one's own ability - despite mental restlessness. It raises the native s top positionsin their respective fields provided of course otherRaja Yoga s are present.

Rahu-Kethu axis favors rise in mundane lifewhile Kethu-Rahu axis indicates elevation in spiritual matters.
o

It is also found that KSY natives get betrayedby trusted friends and even relatives.

Suffering due to developments in life strengthens the mind and mellows one's outlook. This is a blessing of KSY

Other important factors to be noted are: InA KSY horoscope, the evil gets intensified if the Lagna is between Kethu and Rahu 2. the evil gets almost neutralized if the Lagna is between Rahu and Kethu; and 3. the yoga can be considered as defunct even if a single planet is withRahu or Kethu or outsidethe axis.
1.

The original sloka refers to Agre rahu, i. e., Rahu must be the main or prominent planet which means the Yoga can become effective if planets are in between Rahu and Kethu.

Another factor to be considered is if the planet associated with Rahu or Kethu is strongly disposed in his exaltation or own house , the intensity of the KSY gets reduced.

The common fear that if Kala-Sarpa Yoga is fully present the effects of other good planetary combinations get nullified is not without justification. There are horoscopes with excellent yogas showing great advancement and prosperity but the native s continue to be mediocre. A brilliant career may suddenly end. Such cases may have KSY but it may not be the main cause for making one what he is. It maybe one of the causes.

KSY Example
In the following horoscope, KSY is present because of the situation of all the planets in between Kethu and Rahu.

The Yoga is not really strong as the Kethu-Rahu axis is involved and Lagna is not behind Rahu

But the other afflictions - such as the political planet and lord of the 9th Sun being aspected by Saturn, and Saturn being in

conjunction in the 7th with the Lord of Lagna- gave a deep fall despite the fact that the native rose to the highest positionby virtue of other Raja Yoga s, reckoned from both Lagna and Chandra Lagna. The end of Saturn Dasha gave a violent death. Mark the fact the Kethu-Rahu Axis involves the 12th and 6th. the native wasbetrayedby his own trusted colleagues.

It occurs to me that undue importance need not be given to KSY. The view held by some astrologers that KSY affects longevity and adversely affects the operation of other yogas favouring rise in life, achievement and accomplishment is not tenable. The overall assessment of the horoscope is important. No single yoga, including KSY, is capable of marring or making a horoscope. In our view, Kalasarpa Yoga plays an important role in mundane astrology and is not of much importance in individual charts." [end direct quote] -----B.V.Raman "Kala Sarpa Yoga has its bright shades.

It makes one industrious, hardworking, aware of one' s own ability - despite mental restlessness.

It raises the natives to top positions in their respective fields

provided of course other Raja Yoga are present.

Rahu-Ketu axis favors rise in mundane life while Ketu-Rahu axis indicates elevation in spiritual matters. It is also found that Kala Sarpa Yoga natives

get betrayed by trusted friends and even relatives.

Suffering due to developments in life strengthens the mind and mellows one's

outlook. This is a blessing of Kala Sarpa Yoga.

.... It occurs to me that undue importance need not be given to Kala Sarpa Yoga. The view held by some astrologers that Kala Sarpa Yoga affects longevity and adversely affects the operation of other yogas favoring a rise in life, achievement, and accomplishment is not tenable.

.... No single yoga, including Kala Sarpa Yoga, is capable of marring or making a horoscope.

In our view, Kala Sarpa Yoga plays an important role in mundane astrology [assessment of world events] and is not of much importance in individual charts." Introduction to KSY Kala-Sarpa Yoga is a rather late accrual to the Jyotisha inventory of planetary yoga.

Historically, Rahu and Ketu gained prominence in the Jyotisha commentary literature starting around 600-800 C.E. -- long after the main body of literary classics were recorded. ThereforeKala-Sarpa Yoga is not listed in the hoary classical works such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Since its medieval rise to popularity, however, Kala-Sarpa Yoga has captured the interests of practicing Jyotishi. Similar to the commonplace but ridiculously over-simplified beliefs surrounding Kuja dosha ("mangalika") KSY is believed to entail many horrible and crippling consequences.

Kala-Sarpa Yoga is associated with dreadful experiences like suffering from poisons, relentless catastrophes, sudden and disastrous changes in every aspect of life, and every type of scandal. The accursed victim is predicted to become homeless, unmarriageable, unemployable, or a pariah -- all due to this single excruciating planetary configuration.

In truth, few of these terrifying results are likely manifeSaint What the yoga does involve is a rather deep and complex psychological compulsion to re-enact a past-life memory of being especially Chosen as a human sacrifice.

Psychologically, KSY may produce a pattern of self-glorification (Rahu) mixed with self-mortification (Ketu). Emotionally there can be a deep conviction that one has been chosen as an agent of higher destiny. This conviction supports both unusual risk (Rahu) and unusual detachment (Ketu). Rahu always wants to go higher. Ketu always wants to disconnect. KSY imposes a particularly high-frequency oscillation of the attractionrepulsion cycle .

During a Rahu phase, the KSY personality may display radically different traits from the behavior observed during a Ketu phase. It is not a split personality in modern psychological terms. Rather KSY = a two-phase interior signal

Phase-1 announces "urgent ambition to distinguish oneself and obtain privilege NOW" (Rahu) Phase-2 announces "abandon attachments and nebulize into a state of witness, prayer, egolessness NOW" (Ketu).

It can be a challenge to know who this personality really "is" . Yet with KSY, the real person assuredly "is" both an ambitious materialist hungry for elite privilege (Rahu) AND a non-acquisitive wandering mendicant who may seem either saintly or dysfunctional or both. Chandra's character can provide additional profile data regarding the nature of KSY's emotional needs. For example if Chandra + Shani, one may demonstrate a need for approval from institutionalized authorities.

Being used for "higher purposes" may produce especially during the dissolving, pulverizing Ketu phase a sensation that one's life force is being 'consumed' by the deities. In modern parlance, phrasing such as being 'eaten alive by worry' or 'consumed by one's work' may be heard

from the KSY native. One's own individual needs may seem irrelevant to the higher needs of the group. Naturally such a perception may frame a sacrificial personality often found in the lives of the saints. However, the point of confusion is that Rahu dominates this personality and that means there will be periods of burning desire for recognition and "unearned rewards". Obsessive-Compulsive patterns

KSY psycho-mental oscillation pattern may lead to obsessive-compulsive behavior. During the Ketu phase,

dissolution of material ambition and sacrificial "beheading" of the ego demonstrate surrender of one's life force to the goals and needs of one's community, tribe or nation. KSY-native appears detached and highly spiritualized, non-reactive, and often absorbed in reflective prayer. There may be a compulsion to let everything go, to scatter one's possessions, and even to attempt to break apart one's own body.

However during Rahu phases,

Devious Desiring Rahu may attempt to utilize these very acts of apparently selfless spiritual detachment as the launching platform from which the Hungry One can "get it all back" (in spades). Under camouflage of apathetic saintliness, the KSY native may then act on a powerful compulsion to self-promote toward ever-higher levels of elite privilege. The nature of these intensely desired privilegespan> ar may be known via the bhava occupied by Rahu.

Jyotisha Rules for identification of Kala-Sarpa Yoga:

1. All planets must be "hemmed in" between Rahu and Ketu, as we read clockwise in the southern-style radix chart. 2. According to B.V. Raman, Rahu must occupy one of the first six houses from the lagna, i.e., bhava 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. 3. According to B.V. Raman, If even one planet is outside the "clutches" of Rahu-Ketu - if even one planet is not hemmed in - Kala-Sarpa yoga

does not apply. o If even one planet is outside the "jaws of the serpent", results may be surprisingly good for social-change leadership or activism. The person knows all about the destructive powers of wild, excessive desire but one is not entrapped by those desires. Rather, one serves those who are trapped. o Results can be world-scale compassionate leadership - Especially if that one "saving planet" is a benefic like Jupiter or Venus. QuitQuite a number of contemporary world leaders have some type of "modified" kala sarpa yoga where all planets are hemmed in AND some planets occupy the Rahu-Ketu axis. "Kalasarpa will have its effects nullified if one of the planets especially Mercury is exalted and occupies a favorable strong position -- or Lagna is outside Rahu and Ketu." Nullification of KSY B.V. Raman, Catechism of Astrology. Part II, page 35 "Q, 51 What is meant by ''Kalasarpa Yoga'' ? Explain its effects. Ans. Kalasarpa Yoga is formed by the situation of all planets and Lagna within Rahu and Ketu. Here Rahu must be considered as moving in an anti-clockwise direction (Apasavya).

This should not be confused with strong>"Sarpa Yoga" given by all great Rishis as being formed by the presence of Saturn in one of the kendra, Mars in another kendra, and the Sun in another without any association with benefics.

Both these yogas are Arishta Yogas. The first Kalasarpa will have its effects nullified if one of the planets especially Mercury is exalted

and occupies a favorable strong position or Lagna is Outside Rahu and Ketu. As this yoga is not mentioned prominently by such great writers as Varaha Mihira or Satyacharya, we have to take it that it is not very effective in Kali Yuga."

Any graha outside the semicircle of Rahu-Ketu will cancel KSY.

"Q. 31: If all planets, except, say Saturn, are hemmed in between Rahu and Ketu,

does it constitute Kalasarpa Yoga?

Ans:

By Kalasarpa Yoga is meant the situation of all planets between the two nodes. When Saturn is outside the semicircle forming this yoga, then it implies the cancellation of the yoga."

from: Bangalore Venkata Raman. (1992). A Catechism of Astrology. Part II, page 32 (bold-type emphasis by BPL) Q. 48. Is there Kalasarpa Yoga in [Benito] Mussolini's horoscope ? Ans.

There is no doubt Kalasarpa Yoga in Mussolini's horoscope; o but the evil is tempered o because the planets are hemmed in not between Rahu and Ketu but between Ketu and Rahu. Mussolini has a powerful Sula Yoga(one of the Nabhasa Yogas),
o

because all the 7 planets are concentrated in the three houses and the 7th, the 8th and the 9th.

This is quite unfavourable and will have a very adverse effect

o

especially now that Saturn is at present transiting Mussolini's Janma Rashi, in which are placed Saturn and Mars.

[BPL note, Raman would have written this answer in approx. 1942 as gochara Shani passed over the center of Mussolini's janma rashi, Vrishabha = bhava-8. E.g., Saturn Return + Sade-Sati. The by-then-reviled dictator was assassinated by gunshot to the chest, and his corpse subjected to violent abuse.] from: Bangalore Venkata Raman. (1992). Twelve Types of Kala Sarpa Yoga

Students of the samayavidya might notice that the predicted dire consequences of the Kala Sarpa Yoga are not different from the predictions normally associated with standard at-birth placements of Rahu and Ketu within the 12 bhava.

The fact that Rahu-Ketu "encircle" the seven classical graha does not worsen the prediction.

In Kala Sarpa Yoga, as with other prediction for the effect of Rahu and Ketu, the lords of the rashi occupied by Rahu and Ketu provide a definitive force. Yet, as in other predictions for Rahu-Ketu, the occupied bhava is the most important fact. Often, the energy of Rahu-Ketu is significantly expressed through companion planets which share their natal house. However, in the accurate form, Kala Sarpa Yoga permits no graha in the houses of Rahu or Ketu. Therefore KSY does suggest a uniquely strong expression of the nodes within a nativity.

However the undistracted strength of the nodes does not bode evil. It simply bodes a strong and direct expression of the characteristics expected from RahuKetu in their natal bhava. For example,

George W. Bush KSY has natal Rahu-11 in Vrishabha = social and ideological networking. Uchchamsha Rahu in 11 is a virtual guarantee of extraordinary wealth from gains in the marketplace, often via questionable means. Bush's L-11 Shukra occupies the eastern horizon (radix lagna). Mr. Bush hails from a wealthy and well-connected (11) family (Shukra L4 roots). His "connections" are not much impeded in this life, and his broad circle of wealthy association can be expected to take him a long way in life, despite other disabilities in the nativity. One of the disabilities is Mr. Bush's inevitable Ketu in 5, which scatters the output of the natural charisma and makes the person appear disinterested or dull. Neither the fact of his large and powerful marketplace-profitable network (Rahu -Vrishabha-11) nor the fact of his apparently blunted intelligence (Ketu-Vrischika-5) could be said to have produced especially evil results in his career, his income, or his relationship to his children. Rahu-Ketu simply amplified the realities of his social-financial wellconnectedness (11, Vrishabha) and his apparent lack of incisive genius (5, Vrischika). Or as the American idiom goes, "not the sharpest knife in the drawer." USA President Bush-43's KSY is likely nullified, according to the rule of BV Raman, by the strength of Budha in his Karkata lagna enjoying parivartamsha yoga with Chandra-Kanya.

The lore of Rahu-Ketu is not part of the oldest Jyotisha texts (which go back to the Rik Veda and Atharva Veda.) Rahu-Ketu seem to have entered the Jyotisha literature in the early centuries of the common era. Varahamihira mentions them. The yoga names for the specific bhava placements of Rahu-Ketu are drawn from Naga lore.

The serpent force

"Kala" = "earth-time" and "sarpa" means "serpent". One translation of Kala-Sarpa-Yoga = the serpent-force has enclosed your entire

incarnation.

The serpent-force is Nagaenergy, which is essentially Earth energy, the psychic power of chthonic deities. The Nagaare huge, ancient serpentlike deities who continue to control the psychic shield around our planet Earth. Naga beingslive in the subtle-particle (astral) realm which interpenetrates the physical realm. They are overseeing entities, of a much higher vibrational constitution than human beings or other earth-animals. Definitely not to be confused with the common earth reptile! Ancient Indo-Tibetan tradition and some modern esoteric traditions are sensitive enough to detect the presence of Naga energy. These traditions describe Naga effects in detail.

In practical terms, Earth energy is the vibration of the ancient history of Earth. It moves through the vehicles of sound and image. It is not logical; it is not verbal; it is not even rational. (It is older than Budha). It can be controlled, but only with psychic skill. Vocabulary = Naga Koeln Sanskrit Dictionary - a Naga or serpent-demon (the race of Kadru or Su-rasa) - inhabit the waters or the city Bhoga-vati under the earth - Naga are supposed to have a human face with serpent-like lower extremities - the three Naga kings = Sesha , Vasuki , and Takshaka Names of the Nine Naga Vasuki, Ananta, Takshaka, Varuna, Padmaka, Sankhpala, Kulika, Mahapadma, and Karkotaka

Effect of the Yoga

Rahu in bhava-1; * Ketu in bhava-7 Ananta = Annant = Kala Sarpa Yoga

endless, boundless, eternal, infinite; earth, sky, number one

Ananta KSY is said to be short-tempered, impatient, and difficult to satisfy, with the result that alliances and partnerships become frustrating and unbalanced. Rahu in bhava-1 harms the marriage agreement and causes one to feel disinterest toward the spouse. The spouse Ketu in 7 displays apathy and disregard for the native .

Rahu in bhava-2; Ketu in bhava-8 Kulika = Kulik = Kala Sarpa Yoga

poison; also means "head". Name of one of the eight Naga chiefs

Kulika KSY loses control of one's tongue and says hurtful things. Rahu in bhava-2 is considered to speak poisonously, and one may ingest poison or suffer venomous snakebite. Ketu in 8 harms resistance to curses, and one may experience surgeries or psychic invasion.

Rahu in bhava-3 * Ketu in bhava-9 Vasuki Kala Sarpa Yoga

interviewer Larry King (8 marriages)

Vasuki is one of the three chief kings of the Nagas. The gods and demons used the serpent Vasuki as a rope for twisting round the mountain Mandara when they churned the ocean .

Friends who are "lesser" in status (similar to younger siblings) may be cheaters and frauds. In practice, malefics (Rahu, Shani, Kuja) in upachaya houses do give good results over time. Rahu in bhava-3 often produces a younger sibling who may have high ambitions, make sudden announcements, and maintain an unusual lifestyle. Ketu in 9 scatters attachment to the birth religion, and may cause a "relativistic" approach to public morality. Dissatisfaction with overly ritualized religious behavior e.g. pietism will however persist.

Rahu in bhava-4 * Ketu in bhava10 Samka-pala = Shankpal, Shankapal = Kala Sarpa Yoga

Samka = contest , strife, fight Pala = name of a serpent-demon of the race of Vasuki = Naga).

It is said that Relations with the mother and her customs are damaged; one's desire nature is so strong that it separates one from the mother.

traditionally, Vehicles and

owned buildings are also negatively affected. However in practice, Rahu-4 signifies a craving for the privileges accorded to owners of lands, buildings, and vehicles. One wishes to obtain recognition as a member of the class of estate holders. As a result matters of borders, fences, schools, houses, commercial properties, and overall national defense may become expedient devices by which Rahu can self-elevate. unless Rahu's lord is damaged, one may strive to own vast properties, ships, and land vehicles; Rahu may rise impulsively in defense of holdings thus He

empowers security agents and police.

Ketu in 10 scatters attachment to the public respectability, and may cause one to abandon high-visibility leadership roles in favor of operating close to the earth.

Rahu in bhava-5 * Ketu in bhava-11

Padama = Padam = Kala Sarpa Yoga

Literally, padam = "step". Specifically, Padama refers to steps toward the divine = The king's majesty; to make an impression upon; to expand one's position; extend oneself through children.

Rahu bhava-5 = children and creative intelligence is said to harm romance, procreative fertility, and speculative gains. Ketu in 11 harms the financial income and one's general social popularity is reduced through disintereSaint

In practice, Ketu in upachaya houses does give good results over time. If Ketu's lord is strong, gainfulness arrives.

Rahu in bhava-6 * Ketu in bhava12 MahaPadama Kala Sarpa Yoga

A great step, making a very large impression.

Rahu in 6 is actually quite a materially successful placement for Rahu, although it does involve a good deal of lying, criminal desire and multitudes of broken promises. In 6, Rahu gets what He came for. Rahu-6 is said to give exotic, powerful enemies, criminal association, damage to the health, and increase of debt. Yet Rahu will use these problems in a very clever way, as a platform for His own pursuit of recognition and privilege. In general malefics in dushthamsha placements give good results and Rahu in particular does His best work in the satkona. In addition, Rahu-Ketu axis with both nodes in in upachaya bhava [612] will give good results over time largely due to what they do NOT do -- because the disruptive nodes in 6-12 do not harm the pillar kendra of the social personality (1-4-7-10).

poet novelist of broken promises Rainer Maria Rilke

Ketu-12 is said to harm the sleep, dreams, and private bedroom relations, causing debt and dissolution. However the 6/12 is actually a rather good place for the nodes to be, at least for spiritually inclined personality types who have their wits about them.

There is definitely a need to maintain clear and effective boundaries in one's interaction with spirit guides, to prevent unwanted incursion from the more predatory variety of spirit messenger.

However when properly, one's extreme psychic permeability may be a great meditative and guidance-channeling gift. Rahu can be a fraud in 12 but Ketu is innocent

of malice. What Ketu channels here may be weird but it is true.

Rahu in bhava-7 * Ketu in bhava-1 Takshaka Kala Sarpa Yoga

One of the three chief kings of the Naga kingdom . A cutter; a carpenter.

Rahu in 7 is said to give bad qualities to the mate. Generally this holds true only if Rahu's lord is poorly disposed. However any time Rahu occupies Yuvati bhava, whether in Takshaka Kala Sarpa Yoga or not, there is a prediction of desirous ambition and exotic nature in the partner. Ketu in bhava-1 is said to give high blood pressure, headache, and a general lack of enthusiasm for life. The native may have a weak constitution which, combined with the adventurous proclivities of Rahu-7, becomes vulnerable to disease from overindulgence.

poet of forbidden relationshi ps Charles Baudelaire

Rahu in bhava-8 * Ketu in bhava-2

Name of a Naga. Sugar-cane.

Rahu in 8 is said to bring problems from mysterious diseases, black magic, and

sudden shocks. Karkotaka Kala Sarpa Yoga However unless Rahu's lord is damaged, Rahu the Trickster deals rather shrewdly with hidden money, family secrets, and other potentially catastrophic information. Karkotaka-KSY effectively and fearlessly handles emergencies and disasters. One becomes a tantriki or psychic healer through skillful use of poisons.

poet Rainer Maria Rilke

Ketu in bhava-2 is said to give a high income but no savings, an unsupportive family history, and medical problems of the face or teeth. In general, one feels ambivalent about hoarding wealth. Carrying on the family values lineage is not important. Potential for Sensual indulgence overflow due to

"no boundaries" Ketu.

Rahu in bhava-9 * Ketu in bhava-3 Samka = Shankchood = Kala Sarpa Yoga

Samka = contest , strife , fight

Rahu in 9 is said to cause severe financial losses through gambling and disregard for ritual practice. However in practice, Rahu-9 signifies a craving for recognition as a High Priest officiant of the Temple, and a desire to use the preaching of religious or philosophical doctrine as the method of self-elevation to higher privileges. If the dharmapati is strong, Rahu-9 may indicate a socially successful preacher yet the style and content of professing activities may be controversial.

Opus Dei Santo JoseMaria Escriva

Santo JoseMaria Escriva remains a highly controversial figure in the RC Church, with some passionate supporters and some judging his

religious views as inappropriate. Ketu in bhava-3 harms the family relations, produces mental volatility, and brings negativity into the life narrative (the way we explain our lives to ourselves, in conversations with others). One may be apathetic toward human communications in general.

a possible yoga for the Pentecostal talent of "speaking in tongues"

In practice, Ketu in upachaya houses [3, 6, 10, 11] is not so harmful. In Sahaja bhava, Ketu produces a somewhat apathetic or perhaps whimsical communication style which does not cater too effectively to the target audience. One may succumb to being a communicative

agent for the ancestors rather than expressing one's own native thoughts. One needs mental training in the meditative disciplines, to learn to establish boundaries against incursion by predatory ghosts, esp. the ancestors of one's own family line. A younger sibling may have mental health issues or be prone to eccentric behaviors. the native suffers a loss of courage and relations with siblings are harmed due to weak boundaries and poor mental "traffic control".

Rahu in bhava-10 * Ketu in bhava-4 Ghataka = ghatak = Kala Sarpa Yoga

destruction, ruination

Rahu in 10 is said to damage the decisionmaking and leadership capabilities through impatience and desire. In practice, Rahu in upachaya bhava (3, 6, 10, 11) does give good results over time. However Ketu in 4 is unfavorable for pursuit of comfortable habitual

lifestyle. One is seemingly always on the move due to Rahu10 desire to obtain public responsibilities, and home life gets pulverized. So long as there is a second parent in the home however one may continue parenting. A Great Leap Upward in public recognition and "prestige" (Rahu10) usually during Rahu periods. Craves leadership roles. If Rahu's lord is functioning well, the results may be excellent for boundary crashers. E.g., Margaret Thatcher broke through a gender boundary and kept it broken for years. May be accompanied by emotional insecurity and abandonment of life foundations (Ketu4).

Ketu in 4 is said to harm the fundamental serenity and security in life, so that the native feels constant uncertainty and

depression. Some vulnerability to ancestor ghosts who are restless due to incomplete burials (4) after their deaths.

Burning incense while visiting graves of the departed on proper memorial days, or showing memorial honor to those whose passing was not ritually respected at the time (e.g., lost or unrecovered corpse).

Ketu-4 weakens the physical heart, therefore the native must attend more carefully than normal to one's cardiological health. Without proper attention, heart can become a psychic weak spot which lacks protective boundaries. With sensible lifestyle, regular check-ups and management of diet, the problems can be averted.

Rahu in bhava11; * Ketu in bhava-5 Visha-dhara = vishdhar = Kala Sarpa Yoga

Visha = poison, venom, bane, anything actively pernicious. Dhara = a receptacle or container. Vishadhara = a container for holding poisons, or a snake.

USA Pres43 George W. Bush

Rahu in 11 is said to damage the earning powers and the elder sibling, who becomes an enemy. Usually however Rahu creates significant earnings, by devious and deceptive means but still this is a material bhava and it does gives a quantity of measurable material results. Rahu is the natural colord of labha bhava = material goals and achievements. Rahu-11 will eventually produce significant material gainfulness via marketplace risk-taking and taboo-breaking networked friendships. In fact, Vishadhara is probably the best type of KSY materially because Rahu is so motivated to obtain earnings. The native will always become wealthy although the methods typical of Rahu may be surreptitious and highly expedient. Generally the friendship network includes many profit-aiding foreigners who may speak with forked tongue of snaky Rahu.

George W. Bush = uchcha Rahu, very strong, overt advancement of his and R. Cheney's owned oil-and-war corporations. He maintained a close friendship with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia the source of the Bush family oil wealth, before during and after the 2001 Saudi terrorist bombing of New York's WTC.

Ketu in 5 is said to harm the children and reduce the intelligence, to the point where the native cannot control the performance of one's creative mind.

Rahu in bhava-12 * Ketu in bhava-6 Sesha-naga = Sheshnag

Sesha = one of the three great Naga kings.

In practice, Rahu in 12 dushthamsha = quite good results. Rahu-12 is not tricked

Kala Sarpa Yoga

by false expectations. Rahu in 12 is said to give intense imaginative desires which dissolve the physical integrity. Passionate desires expressed in foreign or subconscious dreamlike imaginative settings (12).

Alfred Hitchcock fear films

Ketu in bhava-6 = apathy re: the health, conditions of chronic indebtedness, and a tendency to walk away from conflicts. Arguments and disagreements linger indefinitely, in a state of irresolution. Ketu-6 may be jailed and make no attempt to get out; may be accused and make no attempt to self-defend. Some tendency to be carried along in illegal ventures, not as the lead perpetrator but often as an employee or servant of a wrong-doing master.

What is KalaSarpa yoga and why is it so Dreadful?

First of all, it is really not that dreadful!

KSY may Obsessive, desiredriven , or psychomentally impatient , but not (normally) deadly or dangerous.

KSY yoga gives a "sacrificial" personality which tends to subjugate the welfare of self to the welfare of a group, an ideology, a goal, or a cause.

the native may have limited selfknowledge but they are quite driven to use all of their personal resources to satisfy their singular desire. One often appears to "not have much of a life" because they are so focused in a single channel.

The keynote of KSY is that the native sacrifices, transforms or channels All of the intelligence, abilities, preferences, and perceptionsin life toward thequest forRahu's singular goal.

The group upon which KSY may be obsessively focused can be a family network, a religious cult, a political party, a profession, or any association of people committed to a shared cause. the native 's hunger to satisfy the desires of the group transforms the native 's entire life into a vehicle for this desire. The ideology upon which KSY may be obsessively focused can be political, religious, or anything in between. The goal upon which KSY may be obsessively focused can be physical, mental, social, emotional, or spiritual. The power upon which KSY may be obsessively focused can be psychic, material, punitive, liberating, utterly private, totally global, or anything in

between.

KSY = wide range of sacrificial social expression

KSY may manifest though a driven ideologue whose personality is consumed by a hunger to lead their group into political power.[Margaret Thatcher] KSY can express through a parent who does not live one's own life, but rather lives entirely through one's children, sacrificing everything for the children. KSY can signify a wife who literally lives through her husband, and who commits suicide upon the spouse's death. KSY can create a teacher who lives through their students. KSY may under highly auspicious circumstances creates a son of God who sacrifices one's life for the transformation of

humanity. The The key to understanding the Kalasarpa personality is to appreciate that this native is driven by a great hunger to possess a particular person, object, experience, or power. The The KSY person interprets the ongoing stream of life experience predominantly in terms of this goal. One will sacrifice an unlimited amount of one's own resource in the quest to achieve this satisfaction.

If the goals are socially recognized, KSY's intense and dedicated drive may bring the native worldwide recognition and praise. If the goals are considered socially deviant, the native may be criminalized and eventually executed. KSY does not define the goal. KSY defines theobsessive psychological

driveto reach the goal.

KSY Obsessions

The Kala-Sarpa nativity predicts a lifetime of potentially Obsessive habits and concerns.

Key transits of Rahu-Ketu have enhanced dramatic effect in their lives. The "dreadful" effects of KalaSarpa yoga can much mitigated if the chart is otherwise strong i.e., if there are Raja Yoga s in placeand dasha periods are favorable. In the charts of political people, celebrities and those high in the public eye, "true" Kala Sarpa yoga will give its classic result: "Great fall in life at the pinnacle of achievement."

Psychic sensitivity heightened in KSY

KSY folks are exceptionally psychically sensitive, and their sensitivity can force them to defend themselves through anti-social means. They often form Obsessive healing partnershipswith other psychic 'sensitives'.

Certainly if neither party is awareof their channeling gifts, these partnerships can be ego-destructive. However, the converse is also beautifully true. If aware of their powers, KSY people can be genius healers, trance mediums, and clairvoyant image readers.

KSY and Identity Crisis

During during Rahu/Ketu periods and also periods of the Moon, KSY folks can have severe identity crisescaused by having reached toxic saturation levels of other people's negative imagery. Therefore , KSY folk must patrol their aura

boundaries defensively especially during RahuKetu periods. Vigilant patrolling will ensure that " foreign energy" in the form of criticism and negative pictures, is prevented from entering the individual sphere.

Sacrifice: keynote of KSY

The keynote of KSY is that the native sacrifices, transforms or channels All of the intelligence, abilities, preferences, and perceptionsin life toward thequest forRah Rahu's singular goal.

The psychic strain of this condition can cause terrible pain in the physical body. The pain is authentic but the pain is typically diagnosed as "somatic" which is invalidating to the KSY native who is feeling it.

The problem is that KSY natives use their physical bodies to channel conflictaway from the people they are serving.

KSY people are

found doing this in the fields of medicine, government leadership, family business, and simple homemaking.

They are the people who keep a fractured, conflicted group together by sacrificing themselves for the benefit of group harmony.

KSY and Physical Body Health

KSY females who use their bodies to absorb psychic conflictwill tend to experience radically fluctuating, usually unmanageable excess bodyweight.

Bodily impact is especially acute if Moon or lagnesha is involved with Rahu-Ketu. Additionally the spinethr through which Kundalini energy flows, is often a site of much undiagnosable nerve pain. Pain

and weight management begins to become possible when the native comes to understand their psychic permeability, victim orientation, and sacrificial nature.

KSY males also experience fluctuating body weight but they tend more toward the spinal pain. For both males and females, very close attention to the endocrine balance as well as daily meditation and conscious management of psychic boundaries are essential to a quality lifestyle.

KSY and Sexuality

If Rahu or Ketu are involved with Mangala, sexual interactions of all kinds must be carefully managed due to the heightened psychic openness and potential for psychic invasion (Mangala) and carrying out the agendas of

others(K (Ketu) during a sexual communication.

Whenever Rahu is overly strong, the native will face various issues regarding boundaries. Generally speaking Rahu signals the native to crash, overcome, or invade boundaries. The children who are passive objects of predatory boundary-crashers tend to become adults who repeat the same boundarydisrespecting behaviors. Skillful, articulate, and intentional negotiation of restrictive, outgrown boundaries may be the mark of genius. Obsessive, crude, dehumanizing aggression across protective boundaries is normally considered a criminal act. Rahu's lord can make the difference between an act of genius and an act of criminal

disrespect.

KSY in the 6/12 axis can give 'betrayal'. Females and males may be prone to child sexual victimization within their own families as they become the conflict absorber who calms and reintegrates angry and predatory adults.

Past-life bleedthrough: heroism, ritual murder, and trauma

The default KSY state is unfortunately to suffer increasing pain caused by toxicity and attachment to the victim state.

Subconscious memories continue to pump forward desire to repeat an ancient cycle of self-destructive desire. Recall the myth of RahuKetu! The KSY native was a victim of public religious sacrificeinpast lives. One continues to live out the ego

identity as one who will be destroyed in order than others shall flourish. Historically, some ancient societies had a practice of selecting certain children at birth who would eventually be used as human sacrificial victims.. A child might live their entire life anticipating that one would be murdered in propitiation to the gods at the age of nine or twelve (or whenever the time came).

KSY people are living out this carryover selfimage, inscribed in unspeakable trauma, encased in heroic dignity, and so dominant in the consciousness that it drowns out every other call to selfdevelopment. Essentially KSY are trying torescue the tribe through destroying themselves. In modern life this is rarely effective. In fact it is tragic and embittering. So it is a very good idea

for KSY people to see how their initial healing instinct is classically selfdestructive, and to consciously avoid the attractions of the victim state.

Loss of energy through heroic self-sacrifice

The glorious age of sacrificial victims, who give their lives for their people, is by and large completed. There may be some remaining valid events for heroic self-destruction -such as death by war and sacrifical acts which prevent catastrophe. However, in general, KSY folks are running their lives on old programming.

KSY people often wake up after a lifetime of giving their energy to othersand say, "Why didn't I get an education? Why didn't I save money for retirement? Why didn't I marry the person I loved, but instead married the person who

advanced my cause? Why am I sick, bitter, and resentful that everyone around me is doing better than I am?" False Bodhisattva Even when material circumstances are beneficial in the KSY person's life, the native may suffer a deep grieftoward the end of life. The cause = "false Bodhisattva": seeing, toward the end of the incarnation, that one has abandoned one's own spiritual development to unconsciously serve the agendas of others. (A true bodhisattva has completed one's own path. After completion, the Bodhisattva remains in pastoral service of the incarnated masses until all have arrived.

KSY Conscious transformation = divine sacrifice

The KSY native can be profoundly transformed Andsaintly when one understands one's karmic inheritance and CONSCIOUSLY decides to dedicate one's life to the

welfare of their family, tribe, religion, nation, or humanity.

This is a rare but exquisitely beautiful possibility for the super-conscious KSY.

The conscious KSY native can be a performer of miracles- a transformative guidein any field of endeavor. In contrast to the suffering, toxic, unconscious default KSY, the conscious KSY is not a victim of obsession.

Rather, one may have tremendous vital charisma and deepest possible satisfaction in one's own life.

The conscious KSY knows that one's life is INDEED being sacrificed for a higher cause. One lives in awakened agreement with that calling. This very high level of vocational awarenessgenerates intentional (not obsessive) sacrificial ego transformation. The KSY native becomes

transformed into a mere tool for the divine will. This " high" KSY runs such pure Kundalini energy that one serves a living link between human and divine, executing the will of the divine with no human interference. One willing sacrifices the body for a higher purpose, at the moment the signal is given.

Grumpy and hard to get along with? Yes.

Crazy or destructive? Usually not.

In contradiction to the ominous forecasts of some Jyotisha literature, the world is full of highfunctioning KSY folks with good jobs and stable families. Strong planetswithin the Rahu-Ketu enclosure can be very grounding. As B.V. Raman says, "astrology is a science of tendencies."

Unless the hypersensitivity of KSY is accompanied by

other destructive planetary combinations, the extreme potential of KSY is only partly felt. Generally, KSY gives strong sensitivity -- not psychosis! Also it is important to remember that even the most ominous-looking KSY can easily be cancelled by "Kalasarpa will have its effects nullified if one of the planets especially Mercury is exalted and occupies a favorable strong position -- or Lagna is outside Rahu and Ketu." ~~ B.V. Raman, A Catechism of Astrology. Part II, page 35

In Vedic Astrology : A Guide to the Fundamentals of Jyotish (P. 183) Jyotishi Ronnie Gale Dreyer says, "[KSY] which is labeled in the scriptures as malevolent and unhappy, provides inflexibility, stubbornness, and a high-strung

personality." Certainly this is the traditional viewpoint, and also a true experience for the average low-awareness person. The reason for their grumpiness(in extreme cases, sociopathic personality) is that KSY folk are EXTREMELY psychically sensitive.

Need for psychic education

KSY folk need psychic skill training to learn to defend themselves against the barrage of negative energy in today's world.

If KSY folk can build a successful psychic shield, they can be transformative leaders of a great healing change in society. IMO, Kala Sarpa Yoga represents the effect of intense tantrik training in past lives. The KSY person is predisposed, for good or evil, toward channeling foreign energies

and opening themselves to become vessels for spirit communication. Those who live in such a habitually unbounded mental statecan easily absorb unwanted negative thoughts and feelings from outside their true self. They are often in danger of "losing themselves" in the channeling process.

A Curse?

Village astrologers may refer to KSY as a "curse".

IMO, a superstitious approach to Jyotisha is never healthy or useful. KSY is more beneficially understood as a psychic management challenge. KSY can be intelligently and successfully handledto produce optimum results. Utilizing the enormous psychic sensitivity entailed in KSY, the native

may become transformed into a world-class healer in the field which Rahu's lord suggests. The KSY native's life experience depends heavily on direction from Rahu's lord.

Rahu's Lord can greatly improve KSY results

Rahu =foreigners and taboo-breaking.

Rahu rules no houses. Rahu is obliged to give the results of his planetary lord. If Rahu's lord is auspicious, Rahu's lord will provide a socially recognizable, validated public role. The dignity of the role protects the native from the sociopathological effects of excess contact with taboo substance or behavior.

Skillful use of Rahu and Rahu's lord can produce great leaders!

Example Jyotisha reasoning: If Rahu in Kanya AndRahu's lord in Budha/Mithuna/10,

the native may enjoy a tremendously influential career in communications (Gemini) within the health-care industry (Virgo). Rahu Himself must be a taboo-breaker somehow - this is His nature. Natural choices for medical communications specialty might be taboo diseases sexually transmitted diseases, leprosy, other diseases associated with immoral behavior or "curse" (taboo). Since Mithuna is itself a sexual sign, and Budha is swakshetra in the sign of Gemini, the attraction toward communications genius regarding sexually transmitted diseases is especially strong.

the native is naturally willing to have contact with outcastes and strangers, to travel in foreign lands, and to maintain a relentlessly neutral attitude even while managing a terrifying world epidemic (while the " clean" people turn the other way...).

This is just an example of how Rahu's supposedly sociopathic or at the least difficult-to-like energy can serve as jet fuel for a remarkable world career involving taboo-breaking and healing. Reputable psychic training will go a very long way toward transforming Kala Sarpa's excessive psychic absorptiveness into powerful psychic healing skills.

One Outside Planet: "almost" KSY

In the charts of world leaders, it is common to see an "almost" KSY yogawhich is alleviated by the presence of one single graha outside of the Rahu-

Ketu enclosure. That one outside graha tends to have a very strong effect on the native 's performance in the outside world.

If the one outside planet is Surya(Sun) the person has strong leadership dharma and will probably teach moral philosophy as a guru to dark souls desperate for spiritual information If the one outside planet is Chandra(Moon) the person has tremendous compassion for the masses. Through his caring speech he can uplift large numbers of desiretortured people. If the one outside planet is Mangala(Mars) the person is a gifted social leader who will fight injustice and rally the cause of upliftment for the least powerful (See Jimmy Carter.) If the one outside

planet is Budha(Mercury) the person will use his calculating mind in organizing detailed planning and resource accounting to serve large-scale justice movements designed to lift the masses from their ignorance If the one outside planet is Guru(Jupiter) the person has extraordinary wisdom about other people's desirecaused troubles. He can be a healing professional like a psychologist (perhaps a criminal psychologist) who feels great compassion toward those who are victims of terrible desires. (see Mahatma Gandhi.) If the one outside planet is Shukra(Venus) the person can also save the world (or his own little section of it!) but the vehicle of upliftment will be arts and music. It is

well known that music alone has the real power necessary to change society! If the one outside planet is Shani(Saturn) the person will be exceptionally selfprotective, riskaverse and savvy about the darker side of human nature, but he might participate in social justice movements in a conservative function like legal work with intractable, repressive regimes.

Unfortunately without good supportive planets he will probably become the repressive force he once sought to remove... (see Richard Nixon, Adolph Hitler and Tony Blair .)

KSY cancellations: any graha with Rahu?

Some Jyotishi (including B.V. Raman) opine that Kala-Sarpa yoga is also cancelled if there is any other planet in the same house with Rahu. Some restrict the

cancellation, saying that the Rahu-accompanying planet must be in a lower degree than Rahu in order for KSY effect to obtain.

KSY between Ketu and Rahu?

Most Jyotishi opine that Kala-Sarpa yoga does NOT apply when planets are hemmed in between Ketu and Rahu. KSY is believed by most to occur Onlywhen all planets hemmed in between Rahu and Ketu. Dr. B.V. Raman writes that a variation of KSY does in fact apply between Ketu and Rahu.

KSY by housepair axis: 1-7, 2-8, 3-11, 410, 5-9, and 612

Raman suggests that the particular axis involved 1/7, 2/8, 3/11, 4/10, 5/11, or 6/12- has a significant determining power in the final KSY effects.

The 6/12 axisis associated with betrayal by colleagues or family members.

According to Raman in

Three Hundred Important Combinations, (p. 327) The 6/12 position"could indicate incarceration, or spiritual elevation, depending on the presence or absence of powerful Bandhana Yogas. [Yogas creating bondage, see Three Hundred Important Combinations, p. 274]

The 1/7 axisis obviously inauspicious for marital happiness.

"The marital life," says Raman, "may become oppressive and marred by frequent classes and want of understanding." Raman compassionately mentions that the day-to-day oppression of this difficult KSY variation can be avoided, like all other difficult yoga can be overcome or avoided, through conscious understanding. (The powerful KSY effect in former USA president Bill Clinton's rashi chart, with Rahu in lagna, is a good example of 1/7-KSY.)

2/8gives intrigue of money, mishandling of

shared funds, accounting scandals etc. The person has many ups and downs financially - often great wealth, wiped out, and rebuilt several times 4/10will mark setbacks in career unless 10th-rashi or 10-lord is strong. Roller-coaster cycles of rise-andfall in public life, with tremendous fame attended by scandal creating collapse. 5/11creates difficulties with children, income, and one's community of friendships. Rahu in 5th overall denies children. Yet the KSY, in combination with other yoga, can create too many children, birth defects or accidental deaths for children, or other catastrophic results.

Again, interference by numerous Other malefic factors is required to give

the frightening results often ascribed to KSY.

KSY Remedies

If your Jyotisha nativity shows the "dreaded" KalaSarpa Yoga, don't panic. There is much oversimplified Jyotisha alarmism out there The re is a major market for "remedies" of unfavorable birth yogas in traditional Bharati culture. In the west, the "cure" more likely to be prescribed is selfawareness, personal responsibility, moral and technical education, commitment to serve those less fortunate, and a robust sense of humor. As Dr. Raman so eloquently insists, no single yoga could ever control an entire chart! When inauspicious dashas make life difficult for a conscious person in an otherwise good KSY chart, consider "treating" the KSY condition via gem remedies. Selfless service works best

IMO the single most effective remedy for any type of chronic, selfobsessed mental pattern is to offer selfless serviceto those suffering the same sorrow as oneself, only worse. The best way to pry the mind out of its fixations is o assist otherswith their own life problems. It is remarkable how quickly the spiritual awareness can expand when one observes that many others are working on this precise type of karma, and that being just a bit ahead of those lower down - one may be able to offer useful guidance to those in one's "downstream".

Q:In India,
Kaalsarp dosha has gained great prominence, many astrologers associate restrictions, lack of opportunities and hurdles in life due this yoga.

A : If you have read this

far down the page, you have probably encountered my views on assessing realistic outcomes for this famous but over-estimated astrological configuration.

In brief, I have seen many nativities of perfectly normal people who live out

Others associate KSY with power and fame yoga; as observed by you also, many successful businesspeople and politicians have it. I myself have observed that the yoga does obstruct the smooth working of life. In India, the remedy for it is specific organized puja, conducted by priests in Nasik, Trimbkeshwar, where Lord Shiva shrine is there. What sort of service can eradicate the evil effects of yoga, if some one cannot do the traditional ly recommended puja?

their entire lives with KSY and are fairly happy. As Shri B.V. Raman writes, "The view held by some astrologers that KSY affects longevity and adversely affects the operation of other yogas favouring rise in life, achievement and accomplishment is not tenable. The overall assessment of the horoscope is important. No single yoga, including KSY, is capable of marring or making a horoscope. In our view, Kalasarpa Yoga plays an important role in mundane astrology and is not of much importance in individual charts."

Seva for KSY

As a general principle of "psychic similum", Selfless Service to those

who are not wellconnected to mainstream society and who often get blamed for misfortunes, such as foreigners, outcastes, and other taboo outsiders, will aid in alleviating the fear of being destroyed which is the subconscious reality underlying KSY.

KSY: Rahu in lagna

For those lacking the beneficent corrections of "one outside planet", the most dreadful results of Kala-Sarpa yoga certainly can occur when the person lacks self-consciousness and is thus incapable of assuming spiritual responsibility for his own life.

Passions may become extreme. One becomes such an expedient actor, that no moral principles can restrain him in this life. When Rahu rises, Ketu must occupy bhava-7 = spouse. Native's passions harm the spouse. The life mate becomes "collateral damage" in the

native 's hungry quest for power.

Raman writes (p. 328): "evil gets intensified if lagna is between Ketu and Rahu" whereas "evil is almost neutralized if lagna is between Rahu and Ketu."

Default questing style: duplicitous and illicit.

Barring rescue of the native 's character from other uplifting combinations, KSY Rahu in any bhava signifies a consuming obsession with achieving and controlling matters of that bhava.

The methods employed by Rahu are typically duplicitous and illicit. Recall the myth of RahuKetu. Rahu will do "whatever it takes" to drink the gods' Amrita! Traditionally KalaSarpa " victims" experience ruined marriages, spoiled career/chronic unemployment, hardship, and chronic debt. Major

periods of Rahu or Ketu are devastatingly difficult. KalaSarpa yoga gives a peculiar mental statethroughout life, which is much exacerbated during the nodal returns/oppositions at 18, 27, 36, 54, 72, etc. If other graha support wealth, the native may well be surrounded by wealth and material luxury. But one cannot experience full pleasure from the deluxe conditions. One is always craving a moreintenselevel of experience. One is willing to "throw out the baby with the bathwater";, to sacrifice basic order and stability in life, in order to pursue the next, exciting new experience.

The compulsive mind signals that one *must* concentrate one's full energy into the obsessive quest in order to feel whole.Any activity or relationship which

competes with the quest will be destroyed.

Successful but compulsive

Rahu/Ketu gain tremendous strength in Kala-Sarpa Yoga. One has the power to get the job done.

the native is very successfulin manifesting the craved experiences. However, despite Rahu's power to intensely concentrate the intelligence and attention, which could ideally yield high productivity and creative genius, KSY folks are not so happy.

One is beset by constant pangs of hunger. Just when it seems that one has it all, some new experience appears on the horizon, one feels the obsession rising again, and off one goes in pursuit of it.

Kala-sarpa yoga vs Sarpa yoga.

Sarpa yoga occurs when all benefics

are in kendras while all malefics (Surya, Kuja, Shani) occupy kona (1-5-9) houses. Don't count the Moon's position for Sarpa Yoga.

Sarpa yogais famous for creating "downward mobility". the native is born into family wealth, but by the time of occurrence of the RahuKetu opposition of approx age 27 or the Rahu-Ketu return of approx age 36, that wealth is gone completely and the person becomes a pauper. Usually there is lots of emotional trouble in the family even during the wealthy years.

Bach Flower Remedy for KSY:

RED CHESTNUT= Altruism, self sacrifice. Obsessive concern for others, unable to let go. Sacrificing one over concerns for others. Suffering, or overwrought with fear for loved ones.

Q: Respected madam, Namaskar.

A: IMO, flawless gems can

to remove Kaal Sarpa dosha, a golden ring shaped in form of Snake, is it suggested. I wish for her Good health and happiness, can all this be improved. Best regards -- Jai Ganesha.

channel stronger psychic currents through the body's nadi system, and this is their Jyotisha utility: to magnify the positive thought intentionswhich travel through the nadi (psychic nerve) system. Thought intentions originate entirely in the native 's inner mind, and it is the native 's personal responsibility to generate and maintain positive thoughts. The flawless gem will amplify whatever intention the native produces. If the native is unfortunate enough to be generating negative intentions, then also unfortunately the gems can function as amplifiers or signal-repeaters for negative intentions also. However the important point is that the center of power is not the gem. The center of power is the native's own mind. snake-image in gold sounds to me like sympathetic magic and perhaps has a superstitious motivation to place the power outside of the individual. One point to consider is that Kala Sarpa

yoga is a permanent condition in the nativity, and the Dosha cannot be "removed" by any outside agency.

Kala Sarpa yoga is a part of life for the person who chose to be born with it. With sufficient consciousness, the native will mature morally, emotionally, and psychologically into learning how to manage and direct the Kala Sarpa effects. Another thing to consider is that metals in Jyotisha remedial gem settings (gold, silver, platinum, occasionally copper, panchdhatu) are designed to support and not interrupt the signalstrengthening properties of the gems. The metal is not itself a conducting agent, but it favorably supports the gem. If the golden snake is applied in a ceremony designed

to ground and strengthen the native 's commitment to learn to appreciate and handle properly the Kala Sarpa dosha (in other words to be aware of a tendency to sacrifice one's own energies toward the well-being of one's people) then wearing such a ring could be a positive decision. Such a ring could serve as a "reminder" and help the native "pay attention" to one's own thought process, monitor expectations and reactions, etc. The psychic transactions of the Kala Sarpa dosha native do tend to be highly reactive (Rahu-Ketu influenced) so it could be spiritually beneficial to have such a reminder in a visible place. That conscious, vow-grounded approach toward wearing a golden snake ring could be useful indeed.

However please use caution in regard to the motive for applying the snake ring. If the motive is superstitious, based on the belief that one's power to mature and guide the intention of one's own thoughts and reactions in any way lies Outside the Self, this is misleading and disempowering. Superstition literally meaning "standing outside oneself" - is a dangerous motive. Superstition should be scrupulously avoided when dealing with remedial gems and the culture surrounding them. Kala Sarpa dosha will not be "removed" under any circumstances, because the native 's spirit chose this astral configuration before the time of birth in order to use it as an important learning path within the current

incarnation. The negative effects of the dosha = a Tendency to psychic exhaustion from Over-givingand ungrounded sacrifice (the "martyr type"). These oppressive effects can be relieved through personal attention to one's own behavior and the thoughts which precede the behavior. The ring under no circumstances would be the "cause" of relief. Nor does any material object have inherent divine agencyto "cause" psychic changes. Divine energy flows through the universe in a uniform pattern, and the strongest center for change and healing energy is always the human heart. Outside objects may be beautiful reminders, but the source and origin of change is the divine intelligence, and the base receptor of divine intelligence in the human being is The human heart. ( "Heart" includes the spiritual-mentalemotional-physical levels of heart.) These are my thoughts on

such a snake-ring:

If the purpose is to superstitiously apply a magical talisman and expect The ring itselfto do the work rather than the person wearing it, this is going in the wrong direction. Such a process will have the effect of deepening the Kala Sarpa bondagethrough disempowerment of the heart. However, if the purpose is to serve as a beautiful, visual 'reminder' of the spiritual workthat one has willingly undertaken in this lifetime, it is a lovely idea and may provide cheerful inspiration to push onward along the path of truth.

All the best, Barbara Pijan Lama, Jyotisha-

Q: I have an
"almost" KSY but Rahu is joined in karma bhava by GuruMangala. It is a welcoming rashi for GuruMangala but a bad sign indeed for statuscraving Rahu. Rahu periods tend to bring me far too much obligation in life -- family members want money-loans (which I feel they will not repay as I am the great overseas Provider), cultural expectations such as paying for village festivals (although I no longer live there), boss wants extra hours at work (and not a few hours either but nearly a doubling of my paid hours), kids have so many projects and

A:
You are positively right that shadowy, slippery, manipulative Rahu is in a hostile place: out of the shadows into into a high visibility in the public eye (10) and Simha (hot, bright, dry). Although Rahu gives good results in the longer term when He occupies any upachaya bhava (3,6, 10, 11) in the younger life Shri Rahu in 10-Simha = persistently problematic . In addition, with RahuKetu creating an "almost" Kala Sarpa yoga, it is important to avoid the psychological trap of "martyr complex", becoming a sacrificial victim = feeling obliged to give all your savings to your family members. Simha at the pinnacle of the kundali and you presenting enduring a bhukti of Rahu would suggest that these family members are likely males (Surya), and either their leader is the father (Guru in 10) or it is the father directly initiating the disabling (to you) money sacrifice "for the good of

school performances... I feel like everyone has a piece of me. I would have expected more glamour and recognition from Rahu but there in karma bhava Rahu gives me a Shani-weight of exhaustion, duty, and now if I give the loans that are wanted I am facing poverty too!

the greater family" (KSY). KSY and its modifications suggest a lifelong need for proactive defense against victimization by tribal guilt. Advice:

Consider taking charge of the process, refuse victim-mind. If you choose to give your life savings - much of it earned via overtime hours and other sacrificial methods - to "the fam", then try to do that as the result of a neutral, selfdetermined business decision. The KSY personality is usually tightly bound to "The Family" in larger ethnic sense of tribe = family. Thus KSY considers the welfare of the full, extended family even including the ancestors when KSY makes a decision.

Just make sure that your choice is a "decision" and not an act of martyrdom. The decision should be rationally defensible in terms of your personal, educated, and consciously articulated values. o Rahu-Ketu are desiredriven thus very unreasonable. o Establishing a voice of adult reasoning in Rahu Times is no small battle! Even if it features some aggressive tension (Mangala), your core identity with the extended family = quite strong psychologically .

Do the cost-benefit analysis and you determine that "rescuing" a highly-placed family member really is in your own best interest in

the long term. Try to avoid getting tangled in guilt, grief, and other emotional bondage (RahuKetu) that can disturb the clarity of one's decisions -- leaving the feeling that one is a victim of circumstances. Rather, acknowledge that giving your savings "away" is a choice made in the full light of awareness (Surya). "There are no victims" - this is a fundamental truth.

However, KSY and its modifications often suggests that one was a sacrificial ritual victim in past lives. (There were millions of these in public rituals of a bygone era and still a few today in darker lands.) Therefore be on the alert for voice of powerless, ever-needy victim-mind. Internal victim-narrative, much more than the reallife time-money constraints of Shani, can damage one's mental calm

and add guilt-karma to relationships. Probably there is a strong tradition of reactive guilt in your family. Luckily, you are now spiritually equipped to step forward from that tradition and refuse to accept that historic bondage. To live in the present and not be bound to the past, one must have a clear mind!

Q: Hi Barbara,
how are you? I'm doing okay. I had a question and was hoping you could help me. I'm interested in learning jyotish and wanted to start by looking at my own chart. Now, I've been told that I have "Kala Sarpa Yoga." But in my chart if you take a look, though the Grahado come in between Rahu in the 4th bhava

A : Namaste,
According to Shri B.V. Raman, Kala Sarpa yoga does not apply where there is any graha whatsoever in the rashi of Rahu or in the rashi of Ketu.

For example, in the nativity of Nelson Mandela, KSY does not Apply because Ketu shares Vrishabha rashi with Shukra.

For KSY to apply, all graha must be contained in those rashi which lie between Rahu and Ketu.

For example, the

and Ketu in the 10th bhava, the Moon is still slightly outside of Ketu...does that still qualify/constitute as Kala Sarpa Yoga? If you could enlighten me on that then that'd be great. Thank-you so much.

nativity of George W. Bush displays a legitimate KSY. If Chandra occupies the same rashi either with Rahu or with Ketu, the nativity does NOT contain the Kala Sarpa yoga. Please see also KSY comments by BV Raman. Sincerely, Barbara Pijan Lama, Jyotisha

This is a womanly sign and natives of Cancer are logical and caring. It is said that they have a very unpredictable nature and unable to fix their mind on a particular thing for a long time but they are very creative. THE FOUR AIMS OF LIFE AND VEDIC ASTROLOGY

(c) Jyotishacharya Vinay Sheel Saxena We all have so many desires in our heart but these should be legitimate. Desire is at the root of all sins. It is a desire, that started the first vibration in the Obviousand un obvious Consciousness. Hindu literature says that there are four legitimate goals of life. These

four objects that human beings pursue are Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. DHARMA It is said that the Natural law is the Dharma of the Sun to shine. It is the dharma of the planets to revolve around the Sun. Dharma, when followed carefully, can carry one across the ocean of existence. For following dharma, is to go with the cosmic flow. Though the role of religion is to show or show what dharma is, often it ends up in doctrine and ritual. Dharma is much more than religion. It is beyond all beliefs and narrow ideas religion. To follow dharma is doing what you ought to do. ARTHA It refers to the attainment of wealth or resources that are valuable. Prosperity is essential to allow us to function happily in life. If knowledge is used for supporting oneself, it can also be part of Artha. KARMA Karma is the achievement of one's aspirations. Desires and ambitions are part of "Kama". Lust too is part of it and Kama just represents one's inborn urge to attain one's ambitions. MOKSHA The aims of Artha and Kama can be followedas long as they are genuine if they are based on dharma. With dharma as the basis, if one has attained the first three goals, finally a time comes when one excels them. The first three goals are a means to attain the ultimate goal of Moksha or liberation. If you have gone through a lot of the first three goals, you can realize that there is no permanent pleasure in them, we can realise that this world is temporary and that no fixed and temporary thing can give you eternal happiness. Endless happiness is possible only if a thing is endless and everlasting.Achieving moksha or liberation is just achieving union with the cosmic consciousness or going back to Cosmic Roots. All four aims are important to a life well lived. Actually each of them helps the other, till finally we start desiring the ultimate aim of liberation. But most people do not follow all the four goals similarly because their own individual karmas direct them to prefer particular courses of action and this can be determined from the positions of the Grahas in the signs and houses. Aries is the first house of the zodiac. In aseparate chart, the ascendant or Lagna is the first house. We can apply the same values: PLACEMENT OF THE 4 AIMS IN ONE'S CHART DHARMA HOUSE

When we uphold dharma, it can protect us (dharmorakshatirakshitah). If a person has leaded a Dharmic life in the past, the effects are seen in the current life. This can give him a good education in their childhood which is represented by the 5th and 9th houses also it is seen in the birth of good children and happiness through them again in the 5th and 9th houses. Lastly, if the Dharma has been very strong, it gives Sadhana (mantra in the 5th and guru/spiritual teacher' in the 9th). ARTHA HOUSE Houses related with Artha (i.e. 2nd, 6th and 10th) are also the houses related with the occupation of the person which then leads to the creation of properties that sustain (remember these are the earth signs in the natural zodiac) . To determine an individual's profession (which is the means to wealth or Artha), we have to analyse the Artha triangle. i.eHouses 2, 6 and 10 . The second showsmoneys and gathering of wealth. The sixth indicates service, rivals, debts etc. Most businesses run on loans. The other person is seen on the 7th, 12th being loss or expenditure, the 6th indicates loss to others (12th to 7th). When we take a loan or get into debt, the other person loses, and we gain or get his money. As such our money is based on his spending. In the changing scenario, the 6th house is no longer totally bad. But judging the exact effects needs more knowledge of astrology. KARMA HOUSE The Kama houses (3rd, 7th and 11th) deal with desire. The 3rd shows one's efforts, while the 7th shows all relations with the other person be it a spouse or business partner, or anyone with whom we enter into a contract. The 11th shows one's aspirations, goals and their completion or otherwise. It also shows attachments or ties of a lasting nature like a permanent friendship. The Kama houses show the drives of the person, showing one's efforts, aspirations, goals and interaction with others for the fulfilment of the same but the key word is desire. UPACHAYA HOUSES OR HOUSES OF GROWTH The term on the Upachaya houses is not out of place here. The Upachaya houses are the houses of growth. They are 3, 6, 10, 11 houses. These are the areas where man has more freewill. These houses have a chance for the so-called growth or progress substantially. In fact malefic are favoured here. According to Vedic Astrology the results given for malefic in these houses are better than other houses. Malefic here seem to give more growth materially while actually taking the individual away from the path of understanding. All the Upachaya houses are either Artha (wealth) or Kama (desire) houses. Freewish is allowed more in these areas. Prarabdha rules more strongly in the other houses. 2nd house which signifies the family and the 7th which represents marriage, are largely determined by karmic debts and a person has very less freewish in these areas. We have no choice in the family that we are born into.

MOKSHA HOUSES Moksha houses are considered as spiritual houses and secret houses. They are seldom silent properly and this is the part of the book of fate that is closed to normal human minds. Even the best astrologers know very little of these houses. The 4th and the 8th houses represent psychic and occult powers /abilities, Samadhi, nightmares. The 12th house also means everything foreign-foreign countries, foreigners, etc being watery and also because it signifies the feet. Another important signification of the 12th house is that 'it is a secret house other than the 8th. Scouts, detectives, people involved in any kind of 'secret work' could have a strong 12th house connection. The 12th house also showsending. Water stands for cosmicending. So material ending (loss and expenditure) or voluntary giving away (charity or philanthropy) or at its best the dissolution of the Individual into the Cosmic, in other words final release or moksha, are all indicated by this house. While the 4th indicates interest and study into the occult, the 8th takes us deeper into the secrets of the Cosmic Consciousness and the 12th actually frees the individual under ideal conditions. Actually any of these trio, especially the 8th and 12th give experiences which are unusual, or spiritual. The exact nature of the experience, whether it is truly spiritual or belonging to a lower or higher level of illusion (maya), is decided based on the planets and other houses involved. To understand one's spiritual experiences, an analysis of 4, 8, 12 houses and signs becomes important. In fact any strong links between the houses of Dharma and Moksha bodes well for spiritual feelings and growth.

Remedies for Kal Sarp Yoga Chanting of Mahmrityunjay mantra of lord Shiva Details you will find in the link Kalasarpa Dosha yields good results in the later part of lifeDr. N. Jnanasekaran in conversation with Hemamalini Raghunathan Man who has a natural tendency to do a lot of mistakes (sins) is always afraid of the after-effects of his sins. When it appears as KSD, he is completely shaken. Rahu-Ketu axis does matter much. Karmic seed enters through Ketu and comes out of Rahu with reward or punishment. Many of us love to read about Kalasarpa dosha(KSD). Inspite of lack of reference in the classical treatises, many kinds of interpretations, remedial measures etc do make rounds amongst us. Here are quite convincing explanations, given by the learned Dr. N. Jnanasekaran about Kalasarpa Dosha. He has got a Ph.D. in the Civil Engineering field. He has specialized in Structural Engineering. He took up teaching as his profession. After retirement, Dr. N. Jnanasekaran (mobile:9443552698; email:njnanasekaran

@yahoo.com) wanted to learn Astrology and passed Diploma in Astrology in 2000. Then onwards, he kept enriching his knowledge in astrology day-by-day and has been helping his friends and relatives in this field. A few of his articles are published in EST also. Dr. N. Jnanasekaran took special interest in Kalasarpa dosha, while analyzing horoscopes. He has also been matching horoscopes and guiding in the choice of profession. Why do people generally fear about Kalasarpa Dosha(KSD)? Man has freedom of choice in his action. The reward or punishment for his action is with God. Karmic effect come to a person through Rahu and Ketu. Man who has a natural tendency to do a lot of mistakes (sins) is always afraid of the after-effects of his sins. When it appears as KSD, he is completely shaken. Classical treatises hardly refer to KSD. Then how did the evolution of KSD theory happen? The theory might have been developed from our mythology. Devas and Asuras got succeeded in getting Nector from Milky Ocean. It was served to Devas first. One Asura by name Suvarbam managed to get a share of it. Moon and Sun exposed his act to Lord Vishnu. He chopped his head off from the body for his act. Since he had overcome death, by partaking the Amrit, the head was attached to the tail of a snake and body was attached to the head of the snake. One Asura has become two persons. They are Rahu and Ketu. They prayed Brahma and got included with the other seven planets and the concept of Navagrahas evolved. Scientifically, the two meeting points of Suns orbit and Moons orbit are called Rahu and Ketu. They are also called Shadow planets. Please explain in detail, with case-studies, the working of KSD as various types. Kala Sarpa Dosha (KSD) is said to be caused, when all the planets are within Rahu and Ketu. It requires further explanation. There are three parameters in this Dosha 1. Rahu and Ketu 2. Other seven planets and lagna. 3. Direction of movement of planets mentioned in 2 above. A schematic diagram covering the above three aspects are shown below: A person with KSD is experiencing obstacles in life. Progress is retarded and marriage is delayed. However after 30 years. Dosha becomes Yoga and his growth is enhanced. Two reasons can be attributed to the above Dosha. 1. When Rahu or Ketu is with one planet, the planet becomes weak. It is known that Venus with Rahu affects the family life. When all the planets are between Rahu and Ketu, it is a sort of hemming between the malefic. In such a case, the adverse effect may be more.

2. Karma of a person enters though Ketu and comes out of Rahu with reward or punishment. The person with KSD experiences much greater struggle compared to the influence of a single planet. Four types are to be considered when deciding KSD Type 1: All the planets are within Rahu and Ketu, and moving towards Ketu (Anuloma). This is typical KSD. Type 2: All the planets are within Rahu and Ketu, and moving towards Rahu (Viloma). Type 3: One planet is with Rahu or Ketu and others are within Rahu and Ketu. Planet with Rahu or Ketu is to be carefully studied and decided, whether it is KSD or not. Type 4: More planets are outside Rahu and Ketu. This is not obviously KSD. Example for Type 1 (Anuloma KSD)

In Taurus, Rahu is at 5 and Lagna is at 7. Lagna falls after Rahu Independence birth chart of India is a typical example of KSD. At the birth of the country itself, millions of people were killed and huge amount of compensation had to be paid to Pakistan. India was in divided condition. Sardar Patel with his bold steps brought the united India. The problem of hunger and disease had to be solved. It had to rise up from nothing. Leaders of our country with great vision and political wisdom brought the image of the country to the fore-front. Progress in the areas of Agriculture, Education, Industry, Army, Finance etc. were spectacular. Whenever our

neighboring countries gave pinpricks, they were suitably retaliated. When the world was facing economic crisis, our country stood the test, because of the planning pattern of Reserve Bank of India and the basic culture of our people. This is a typical example of KSD, in which initial phase has problems and the later phase prosperity. Another Example for Anuloma KSD

The horoscope of Jawaharlal Nehru is another typical example of KSD. Though he was born in a rich family and was practising as a leading lawyer, he sacrificed his personal comforts for the cause of our country. His wife also passed away in his earlier age. Ultimately, he became the first Prime Minister of our Country and laid foundation for the growth of nation. His first half of life was full of struggles and in the later half, he had a princely life. His daughter Mrs. Indira Gandhi and grandson Rajiv Gandhi were shot dead. The influence of KSD penetrates upto a minimum of three generations. Example for the Type 2 (Viloma KSD) The popular Lawyer Alladi Krishnaswamy..

All the planets are hemmed-in-between the Nodes, and moving towards Rahu. He was a famous lawyer and earned huge wealth. He was expert in his field. His contributions to the Indian constitution are noteworthy. Many intricacies are involved in KSD. It is suggested that a horoscope with KSD need to be identified and treated with caution. Does KSD have anything to do with offence done to snakes in the previous birth? Experience indicates that there is a connection between harming of snakes and KSD. From my experience, I have seen a rich person owning 30 acres of land and having his residence there. But the area had many snakes. He used to kill the snakes for his protection. Three generations were not able to enjoy it. The property was under litigation for nearly 20 years. Only his grandson and granddaughter compromised the case and were able to get a fraction of it and enjoy it now. The grand daughters horoscope in given below:

This is an example of Type 2 in Viloma KSD, in which all the planets move towards Rahu. Type 2 can be taken as a mild form of Type 1 (Anuloma). How about any special influence of RahuKetu axis? Rahu-Ketu axis does matter much. Karmic seed enters through Ketu and comes out of Rahu with reward or punishment. For example, if Rahu is in the 2nd house and Ketu in the 8th house, Karmic effect enters the 8th house and the effects are seen from the 2nd house and its trines (namely 2,6,10). It is shown in the figure below: Similarly KSD effects can be inferred for other RahuKetu axis. What are the Remedies for KSD? Kalahasthi is famous for KSD remedy. It is performed by temple authorities. It is done on all days during Rahu kalam period. It is reliable.

Rudra Abishekam to Lord Shiva is another remedy. Abishekam ticket for Milk or Rose water can be got from the temple office and the devotee can go near the Sanctum Santorum and have good darshan of Lord Shiva. Remedy can be done in the stars of Rahu and Ketu, and Full Moon and New Moon days. A pious life and worship of a deity will ward off many evils. Naga Pooja and Naga pratishta can be done at Rameswaram. Any remedy done according to his ability and done with sincerity and devotion will yield good results.

Kaal Sarpa Yog : Its relevance or irrelevance in Astrology !

[ This is slightly longer article, hence, may require some patience to read ] Kaal Sarpa Yog : Its relevance or irrelevance in Astrology ! When, in a birth-chart, all other seven planets are placed in between Rahu & Ketu, it is stated to be the presence of Kaal-sarpa yoga in the horoscope. It has been stated in some texts that the effect of Kaal-sarpa yog, a dangerously malefic yoga, remains till the age of 47 years and sometimes throughout life; and, a person having this yog in his horoscope faces problems of instability in his life, defamation, problems in Progeny, mental disturbances. It has also been stated in some texts that a person affected by Kapsarpa Yog will see Pythons and Snakes in his dreams(!) In some texts a diagonally opposite effect has been stated about Kaal-Sarpa yog. It has been stated that the presence of Kaap-Sarpa Yog makes the native very courageous and practical; and, Kaal-sarpa yog makes their personality very impressive. In all, there have been contradictory statements about Kaal-Sarpa Yog, particularly in India. It is not out of place to mention here that the classical texts on Astrology do not find mention of Kaal-Sarpa Yog as stated in various books/Magazines nowadays. To have an in-depth understanding of the so-called Kaal-Sarpa Yog, we need to understand the Ascending and Descending Nodes of Moon, known as Rahu and Ketu. Let us first understand what are Rahu & Ketu : Sun, apparently, moves around the Earth. The path of this apparent movement of Sun is called Ravi Kranti Marg (Vrit). We also know that Moon revolves around the Earth. The Ravi Kranti Vrit and the path of Moons revolution around the Earth are not parallel; and, intersect each other. In the process of its revolution, the Moon crosses Ravi Kranti Vrit from the below and goes upward (ascends); and, on next occasion, Moon crosses Ravi Kranti Vrit from the above and goes downward (descends). These ascending node and descending node are called Rahu & Ketu respectively. These two points of reference have no physical body, no mass whatsoever and no shadow of their own. Hence, Rahu & Ketu are not natural planets nor any shadowy planets, these are only reference points created because of intersection of Ravi-Kranti-Vrit by Moons revolution around the Earth. The following picture will further clarify the phenomenon of Rahu & Ketu: What we see in a horoscope is a two-dimensional picture of planet-position which may give an impression that other planets are situated in between Rahu & Ketu; whereas in

actual Sky there are more than two dimensions. Each planet has its own revolution-path which is neither uniform nor parallel to Celestial equator and have their own varying Altitude and Azimuth. If we observe closely, we come to see that the phenomenon leading to creation of Ascending Node and Descending Node is created by other inner planets as well. The transit or passage of a planet across the Surya-Kranti-Marg take place in respect of the inner planets Mercury and Venus as well, in addition to Moon. On the average, there are 13 transits of Mercury each century. In comparison, transits of Venus usually occur in pairs with eight years separating the two events. The following is a picture of Venus transiting Surya-Kranti-Vrit. Photograph of the Transit of Venus on 1882 Dec 06. There have been instances when four bodies (planets) are lined up. One such case occurred on March 21, 1894 at around 23:00 UTC, when Mercury transited the Sun as seen from Venus, and Mercury and Venus both simultaneously transited the Sun as seen from Outer planets. It may thus be seen that it is not only Moon which intersects Surya-Kranti-Vrit but this Vrit (Circle) is also intersected by Mercury and Venus as well whereas no significance is given to the same intersection by Venus and Mercury, by the Astrologers. Probably, it is non-awareness of this astronomical fact or its astrological effects. It is a fact that the events like creation of Nodes (Ascending or Descending) keeps going on at regular intervals by planets, Mercury and Venus also, which mostly goes un-noticed due to lack of knowledge. The name [Kaal-Sarpa] given to this phenomenon is so terrifying as if the native had committed a severe-sin in his last birth that led to presence of Kal-Sarpa-Yog in the horoscope. It has been stated in some texts that the positive effects of all other planets, when these are placed in one side of Rahu & Ketu, get nullified and to get the desired positive effect of the planets, certain remedial measures (pooja etc) need be taken. It has however, been seen that the above notion is not based on facts. The native born in this combination of planets have been seen to be very successful, the world over. Astrologically speaking, the yogas are a set of specific permutations & combinations of planets with respect to their placement, exchange and their aspects, mutual or otherwise. It does not seem to be logical to create a yoga (specifically Kaal-sarpa yoga) which is not based on placement/exchange or aspects of planets but their being hemmed/locked between two reference points. Therefore the so-called Kaap-sarpa Yog does not withstand this scrutiny. I would like to add here a small story which goes like this:

A sculptor carved out a very beautiful and a lively sculpture. The King made a visit to the place and came across that sculpture. Impressed by the beauty and liveliness thereof, the King praised the sculptor and said, You have made a lively sculpture out of a dead stone. The sculptor said, I did not make anything, Sir. This beautiful and lively picture was already there in the stone. I merely removed the excess of the stone and this beautiful sculpture appeared. This story reminds me of the same what has happened to Astrology, particularly in India. The excess of stone needs be removed to present the true and scientific picture of astrology. With the passage of time, astrology has acquired a few irrational concepts which are otherwise not a part of the classical texts on astrology. In some cases which were given little importance or which could find only a mention in classical texts, their so-called negative effect has been unnecessarily exaggerated. There is no reason to panic in the name of Kaal-sarpa Yoga. This yoga does not find mention in original-classical texts of Astrology. This combination has been found to be present in the horoscopes of many national and internationally famous personalities like Pandit Nehru ji, Sachin Tendulkar, Dhirubhai Ambani, Margaret Thatcher and many more. This combination does not have any impact, negative or otherwise, on other planets in any manner. Every planet is to be considered individually in relation to its placement, exchange, aspect, divisional charts, dasha, transit etc are also to be examined in a scientific manner for purposeful assessment of the chart. I hope this clears the doubts and un-necessary fears prevalent in the name of Kaal-Sarpa Yog. The presence of this combination in a horoscope does not call for any pooja nor any remedy, whatsoever.

SARPA/KALASARPA DOSHA IN HOROSCOPE

2 Votes Too many theories and school of thoughts are in circulation about the causes, effects and remedies of sarpadosha found in a horoscope. Usually it is attributed to killing of a serpent by the native or his ancestors. The results are delay in achieving any goal, obstructions, health problems etc., The remedies are worshipping the nagadevathe, sarpa samskara, naga prathiste etc.,

Dose killing a serpent really cause this dosha or is there any other cause for this? Let us try to understand how this dosha is reflected in a horoscope or identifying this dosha from a given horoscope. 01. When the Planet Moon or the Ascendant is associated with the Shadow planets Rahu and Ketu. 02. When Rahu and Ketu are placed in 01, 04, 07 and 10th houses from the ascendant. 03. When all the planets in a horoscope are hemmed in between Ketu . 04. When the punya and purva punya houses ( 05 and 09) are affected by Rahu and Ketu. A retrograde planet is said to be an indicator of the previous Karma (sins) of an individual. Rahu and Ketu are natural retrograde shadow planets representing a serpents head and serpents tail. The placement of these planets quantify the extent of doshas one has to suffer. SARPA/KALASARPA DOSHA is formed due to the curse of the affected people. Cheating, Acquiring ones wealth/property by force,Ill treating wife, parents, co born, mis use of power for personal gains etc., are the sole reasons for the formation of the dosha. The affected person who is humiliated and cheated cannot live in peace nor can hit back. He spends sleepless nights and curses the person who have caused such a situation. This curse causes a sarpa dosha and it is not mere killing of a serpent. It is difficult to see a serpent in our places these days and the question of killing it may not arise at all to acquire the dosha. With in a few years we may be able to see a snake only on pictures or T.V shows. Persons acquiring wealth through illegal means also suffer from this dosha. The effects of this dosha can be broadly classified as under: 01. Rahu/Ketu- with moon ascendant flickering mind, mental worries, negative thinking, frustration, mistrust, poor understanding, strained relationship with partners, problems to parents at birth, ill-health, delayed marriage etc., 02.Rahu/Ketu in 04th from moon/ascendant. hurdles in education, misery to mother, problems in acquiring assets/vehicles, non recognition at work place, frustration in profession, a gap in the ambition and the achievement etc., 03.Rahu/ketu in 05th from moon/ascendant. Problems in child-birth, poor concentration, negative thoughts, poor management skills, acquisition of wealth through illegal means etc., The effects are more marked when the ascendant and the moons position are the same and it will be still more strong if sun is also placed with the ascendant and the moon.

In the case of a Kalasarpa Dosha, it is like holding an umbrella when the fortune rains. One has to run for a thing which the other gets it sitting. The efforts are more and the results are meager, resulting in frustration, worries, poor chances for development etc., THE REMEDIES The only remedy is to accept the fault and not to repeat the same sin again. Pray the lord almighty to forgive , bless with his association at the time of our distress so that it becomes bearable and enjoyable. Accept things as it comes and thinking what has happened has rightly happened and thank the lord . Any number of pujas and other rituals performed may not be of any use till the curse is cleared. You may be surprised that a sarpa dosha once entering a persons horoscope will continue with his children and others horoscope till it is cleared. The curse forming as a dark cloud around you will not allow you to see and judge things properly. The only remidy is to blow off this clouds of curse. Are all pujas done in connection with warding of the doshas a waste? Definetly not. When Rahu/Ketu at the dosha places receieve the good aspect of benefic planets or in conjunction of benefic planets the intensity of the dosha is reduced and it is quite possible that mere sincere pujas with devotion are enough to reduce the ill effects ofthe dosha. 01. Poor feeding. There is no match for offering food to the hungry . This is the only dana where the receiver says enough at least for the time being. Their blessings will blow the dark clouds of curse covering us. 02. Help the poor in their misery and times of distress. These small gesture of help will go a very long way in clearing your doshas. 03.Help women in distress, visit and spend some time at old age homes where poor old souls live , away from their beloved ones, neglected and waiting for a word of love and support. Offer fruits / food to them their blessings have many fold strength to ward off all the evils. 04.Help people suffering from diseases. Any amount spent on them will confer on you good health and you may not have spent on your own health. It is like taking a health insurance. 05. Do good to others. Think positive. Belive in the lord. Keep calm and to pass through the testing time. When you surrender your self to god fully he will take care of you and no dosha however big or small need not bother you. Your life is not counted by the number of days you lived but the number of good deeds you have done. With this you will gain higher status in the coming births and enjoy all the happiness. 06.Feed a cow with a mixture of Nava dhanyas along with jagary each day. It is capable of warding off the evil effects. The Dhanya should at least two fist ful of the affected person. You get the blessings of 33 crore devas .

07.Feeding crows/birds with food and water is also helpful. Place some eatables in a particular place , where birds and crows have an easy access. You get blessed bypitru devas. Beware of touts who claim that they can ward off all your sins by some ritual or the other. You only lose money along with peace of mind. To serve a punishment for our faults is the only way to cleanse ourself from the sin. Godess Mahalakshmi herself has opined that the effects of good deeds will not ward off the effects of the bad deeds. Both the effects are to be enjoyed separately. If you earn wealth by illegal means and spend the entire thing on dharmakaryas, you will enjoy punyaphala for doing dharma and at the same time you have to suffer for having earned the money in a bad way. Friends, These days sarpadosha horoscopes have become so common that it is very difficult to find one without it. Perhaps our life style may be one of the very strong reasons for this. It is never too late. Let us change our way of thinking, act for the benefit of the needy and derive the satisfaction of some help to the society, in which we live in. Let us not gift this dosha to our children and make their life miserable. After all we live, earn and save for our children . Let their happiness and a transformed society be our goal. Your suggestions are most welcome. Let the lord be your guide and not the touts. acquire knowladge rather than being intelligent. May god bless you all. NARASIMHA K

KUJA DOSHA

3 Votes Kuja Dosha is a factor which is bothering most of the Indians. This dosha is non existent in the western astrology. Then What is Kuja Dosha ? How dose it exist ? Why it is bothering mos of the Indians? To find an answer to the above questions, we have to understand certain factors which has led to creation of Kuja Dosha and Female Astrology concepts. Ours was a male dominated society from the very beginning. Yatra Naryastu Pujyante Ramyate tatra Devata Gods are happy where the female are honoured and worshiped and the female has to be guarded as a jewel in the hands of her father during her

childhood, husband after her marriage and by her children in her old age , remained only as slogans and were never practised. The female was burnt alive along with her dead husband, and she was awarded a title Sati. this brutal act had to be stopped by many reformers and by legislation. Any insubordination of a women was least tolerated and was never heard off in this male dominated society and hence they went in for a women who never raised her voice against the unjust practices of men. Anger, Courage, Bravery, Brute force, Energy, Commandeering ability, Malish are the characteristics of the planet KUJA/MARS/MANGALA. Any person with these features was considered unfit to be a good match to any male as it was a set back to the male supremacy. Hence the bride who possessed no such features was selected as a life partner. The KUJABALA (strength) was converted in to a negative factor and considered not fit for happy married life of a male. There is practically not much difference between between handling a male/female horoscope. All yogas, avayogas ( doshas and strengths) applies equally to male and female horoscopes without much exception. Kuja/Mangala/Angaraka/Mars dosha is said to exist when this planet is situated in 01,02,04,05,07,08 and or 12Th house in a horoscope. The planet being classified as Malefic, is said to cause malefic effect to the 07Th (wife/ husbands welfare) and the 08Th ( husbands/wifes longevity). Why Kuja ? any malefic planet could cause the same effect. The other reason for selecting a bride with only good yogas was due to the fact that a fully dependant wifes good yogas would be felt by the husband as her benefactor. An earning wife is not dependant on her husband and is capable of enjoying her own yogas by herself. Planet Mars has special aspects too. He aspects (sees) the 04Th, 07Th and the 08Th houses from where he is situated. From this angle if we examine a horoscope, then he is bad if situated in 01 as he aspects 04, 07 and 08. He is bad if he is situated in 02 as he aspects 08. He is bad in 04 as he aspects 07. He is bad in 05 as he aspects 08. In 06 he aspects 01. He is bad in 07 as he aspects 01, 02 and is stationed in 07 the house itself. He is bad in 08 as he aspects 02, 03 and is stationed in 08 itself. He is bad in 09Th as he aspects 12 and 04. In 10Th he aspects 01, 04 and 05. In 11 he aspects 02, 05 and again in 12Th he aspects 07th. The only other place left is the 03rd, where he is bad as karaka for coborns. Which is the good house for him to be in a horoscope? There is a rule in reading the horoscope and it is P A C T. Here P stands for placement, A for aspect, C for conjunction and T for timing. It should be very clear that each factor has the strength to alter the ill/ good effects of a planet. Of the four the last one Timing is of utmost importance. Planets are supposed to give their effects during their dashas and the native should have the Dasha period of a planet to enjoy its good/bad effects. What is the use of a kuja dosha if it operates at the age of 75? Sthree soukhya ( enjoyment from women) at the age of 07 ? Both are use less to the native.

If mars is favourable in a horoscope, If he happens to be a birth yogi or II yogi, If the 7th and or 8th houses receive good aspect by benefice planets and the Kuja dasha is not operating in the appropriate age or dose not operate at all during ones life time then you need not bother about this dosha. The effects of this dosha can be neutralised by remaining calm, being reasonably practical, control anger and by a better understanding. It is not the MANGALYA that alone gets affected by this planet. He can play a spoil sport in all most all important aspects of life like profession, brother/sister relation, profession etc., based on his placement. Kujabala is required to motivate a person to act. It becomes a dosha when it exceeds the required dose. To have a check dam to control our emotions is the best way to convert the dosha in to a yoga. It provides the force between the thinking and the act. No jumping conclusions are to be made. One should examine how the planet is placed. His ownership of houses. Weather he is a positive planet to the horoscope or not. Weather he is a Yogi to the horoscope or not. The nature of the Rasi, Bhava and the star he is placed also is to be carefully considered. Many are of the opinion that this dosha should exist in both the horoscopes for a happy married life. Perhaps they are not for the death of only one partner!! If any one suddenly jumps in to a ready conclusion, he is not only be doing a dis service to the science (but will bear the curse of the planet for the false accusation) but also bear the curse of the disappointed parents of daughters/sons whose alliance are broken by the gospel spell of astrologers on Kuja dosha. Education to the female, Powers to the female, Independence to the female are slowly breaking the castle of male supremacy. Now a days she is not the puppet in the hands of the male to dance to their tunes. She thinks, acts, lives independently and may be this is one of the reasons for the increased divorce cases in our country also. Better understanding between the two, mutual respect to the others thinking, sharing the responsibilities sensibly etc., could only result in better health of the society. Let us live live responsibly, Act responsibly and have a better understanding to Convert Kuja Dosha in to Kuja yoga. LET THE LORD YOU LOVE AND WORSHIP BE WITH YOU TO COME OUT OF THIS FALSE ALARM. TOUGH TIME NEVER LASTS BUT THE TOUGH PEOPLE DO. Your views are most welcome. You may also suggest the the next topic in which you are interested. NARASIMHAK

THE WHY WHAT AND HOW OF COMPATIBILITY

4 Votes

What is compatibility? It is grouping. It is match making. It is to understand weather one thing makes a perfect match with the other. This applies to every thing, not just matching a horoscope for marriages. When water is mixed with milk, it makes a good match but reduces the strength of the milk. When mixed with honey, it makes a good match and enhances the strength of milk with its good qualities. When mixed with lemon juice, it makes a bad match and destroys the milk itself. Another example can be blood. Before transfusion blood has to be matched properly otherwise it may kill the receiver. The process of matching starts the day we are born and ends on the day we are laid to rest. It is very important that we select the right thing to make ourselves comfortable. The medicine we take, the dress we wear, the combination we opt for education, the profession we select, the friends we make, the money we spend, the property we acquire, The boy/girl we marry are to be selected with care. We give more importance to marriage compatibility and ignore the other areas which are also important for our comfortable living. Perhaps, we think that, the boy/girl lives with each other for each ones life time and this compatibility, when not looked in to properly may ruin ones life. True. What happens when a subject in which you are least interested is forced on you by your parents, without caring for your ambitions and abilities? What happens, when penicillin is administered to you when you are allergic to it? How do you manage a clerks post after studying science for your graduation? Many a times things are forced on us against our wishes and make our life miserable. Runaanubandha rupena Pashu, Patni, Sutha, Alaya. We get material comforts like vehicle, wealth, wife/husband, children, House we live in, friends etc., according to our Karma, good or bad. Match making is a process through which, we try to match horoscopes, with compatibility to make the natives life a little comfortable How compatibility is studied, is technical in nature and a person with no background of astrology may not easily digest it. However I have tried to make the concept, much simpler, so that any reader can understand and appreciate the efforts behind match making There are three important areas, for which compatibility, is looked in to. The Mind, The Soul and The Body. These factors are represented by the Moon, the Sun and the Ascendant in a horoscope. Let us try to understand the importance of these factors in match making.

The Moon is the karaka ( cause ) of Mind in a horoscope. It is important that the mind set of the boy and the girl should match each other in general, to make their future happy. This is studied by the rashi ( house) and the star occupied by the moon at the time of birth in each horoscope. Each house and the star is ruled by different planets and it is essential that the owners of the houses and stars in each horoscope are not inimical to each other. Such of those who have no horoscopes, match is on Namanakshatra basis. In the olden days, horoscopes were prepared for the rich and the famous. The ordinary people did not have the privilege of getting their individual horoscopes. These people were named in such a way, that their star could be found by the name. Each star was identified with a letter of the alphabet and they were named as per their star, for easy identification. These days, whenever a horoscope did not match, the astrologers suggest changing of the name of the bride that suits the groom, which dose not stand logic and is a futile exercise to make one happy. Shasta Astaka, combinations are termed as bad. That is the moons position should not be eight or sixth from the other horoscope for Shasta Astaka. The sixth being the house enemies, debts and the eight is the house of death and destruction, this combination is termed as bad. The bad effects are reduced if the owners of both the house are the same and the owners of the stars have mutual friendship, which has to be looked in to. Let me give you an example. For a person born under Vishaka Star and Tula Rashi, a person born under Rohini star and Vrishabha rashi make a Shasta Astaka combination. Here the lord for both the rashis are Venus. The owner for rohini is moon and for vishaka is jupiter who are friends. If both the planets are favorably placed in each horoscope then the Shasta Ashtaka effects are reduced. The Soul is represented by the planet the Sun. Though most of the astrologers do not go in for a match of this aspect, these days, a combination as explained above will add on to like minded thinking and actions which is very essential for a happy union. It is not enough that the husband and wife only are happy with each other. We have several others living with them to be kept happy or at least comfortable Treating others as subordinates, ego factors will be taken care of here if a well balanced combination exists. Here also, the shasta ashtaka combinations is termed bad and one has to judge the horoscopes properly for better judgment. The ascendant is the karaka of the body. A body match is very essential for making a perfect looking pair. All the factors explained above applies to this factor also. Usually Ascendants situated at one, five and nine houses away from each other makes a good match. Ascendants situated at four, seven and ten also make a good match. A combination of sixth- eight, second-twelfth are considered bad. Once again, all aspects are looked in to, before a final conclusion is drawn. There are other school of thought, which prescribes that different planets, other than the sun, moon and the Ascendant, should have good placements from each other to have a perfect match This may be a fact, but we may not match many horoscopes during our life time. There is another system which establishes the link between persons like the

father, mother, son etc., This in my experience establish only the link between the persons and not the good or bad effects. Certain Astrologers feel that by fixing a very good horoscope to an ordinary horoscope, the fate of the other can be changed. This is not true either. If a girl endowed with all comforts is married to a sick man, the girl finds her own way for enjoyments and makes the life of the sick man more miserable and unbearable. Girls with long married life cannot increase the longevity of their husbands, they may marry again and lead a happy married life. What is written only is to be read. No interpretation of any sort holds water. A careful study of the horoscope is necessary to make a good match making. Then how love marriages happen without verification? One may ask. Like friendship between planets of a permanent nature, there are other states of friendship, like temporary friendship. This can happen between enemies also according to their temporary placements. Most of he love develops under these combinations and many of them do not lost long or end happily. You make friendship with a person while travelling in a train, you may become very friendly and close but it ends the moment you alight at you destination. You develop a sudden sympathy towards a person, whom you never knew before and come forward to help him. This situation also develops due to affinity of planets with each other horoscope. You have several friends but a very few may be your intimate. Many times you make a friendship and finally get duped by him. When one is destined to have what he is entitled? why match making? one may ask. This is only a precaution one has to take before selecting a match. Several trains go to Delhi daily and reach Delhi safely also. You have a chance to select the train ( fast, super fast, mail, express) class you want to travel ( AC, First class, sleeper,General compartment) for your comfort depending on your capacity. Any thing can happen during the journey, but we want you to be comfortable till such time, at least. Affliction of the planets Rahu and Ketu to the Ascendant and the moon, Rahu and Ketu in the second house, fourth house and with the lord of the ascendant has to be judged as they may cause instability of mind, sharp tongue, infidelity and deceases which lasts long. Venus in the seventh house, Jupitor in the fifth house, Mars in the third house has to be judged. If a horoscope has benefice planets in the first, fifth and the ninth house , then there is nothing to worry. Same is the case when benefices occupy the first, fourth, the seventh and the tenth. These placements cause good yogas of the first and the second order. Benefice planets before and after the seventh house is good for the partner and the same position for the ascendant is good for the native. Trust in god. Surrender your horoscope to the lord. He is capable of giving you, what you are entitled to. Enjoy what he showers on you and all your interests are taken care of by him. The match making is for the others who cannot fully surrender themselves and bow to the gods verdict.

Last but not the least let me tell you that Hanuman and Rama, Lord Srinivasa and Mahalakshmi had Shastastaka combination. Dose that mean anything? Your views are most welcome. NARASIMHA K

VEDIC ASTROLOGY AND KALA BALA OF PLANETS

Article Summary: Mathematical astrology is as important as Predictive astrology in astrology. (c) Jyotishacharya Vinay Sheel Saxena Mathematical astrology is as important as Predictive astrology in astrology. It is a base through which astrology determines the Nakshatra and planetary positions and forecasts there by. Here in this article l will discuss Kala Balawhich is a piece of Shad-Bala by which planetary strengths is measured. KaalaBala means the time Weakness. Exactly we can say that the planets obtain Time Strength which is permanent from various sources. Time Strength is sub-divided in to six parts namely, NataunnataBala (diurnal strength), PakshaBala (Moon phase strength), TribhagaBala (day night strength), Varsha, Maas, Dina Bala (Year, month, day strength), YuddhaBala (planetary war strength) and AyanBala (equinoctial strength). Here in this article we will discuss about the first three sub-divisions of Time Strength of planets. NATAUNNATA BALA In NataunnataBala the Moon, Saturn and Mars are stronger during midnight and weaker during midday. The Sun, Jupiter and Venus get stronger at midday and are less strong at midnight. In Time Strength of planets Mercury always has full strength. The Sun, Moon and Mars acquire 60 points when a native is born at midnight. Same planets receive 0 point when a native is born at after noon time. The Sun, Jupiter and Venus get 60 points when a native is born during midday and has 0 point when a child is born during midnight. PAKSHA BALA The PakshaBala is connected with the lunar phase. There are two Pakshas in a month; these are Krishna Paksha and ShuklaPaksha. A Paksha is of 15 days. According to Shad Bala auspicious planets are strong during Shuklapaksha. Jupiter, Moon and Venus have

auspicious effect on Mercury for 8 days during Shukla and Krishna Paksha. These planets are strong in ShuklaPaksha. The Sun, Mars and Saturn have inauspicious influence on Mercury for 8 days during the two Paksha. These planets are strong in Krishna Paksha. The Moon has 120 points on New Moon and Full Moon day. Moon becomes strong with 60 points during the Paksha and extremelyeffects human lives. To see the strength of Paksha the difference between the longitudes of Sun and Moon has to be found out. If the angle is greater than 180 degree then it has should be withdrew from 360 degrees. The result is divided by 3 to get the final result which is the Paksha strength of a planet. The formula to determine Paksha strength of planet is- (Moon / Sun) = PakshaBala of the planet TRIBHA BALA In TribhagaBala the day and night are divided into three parts. Jupiter always gets 60 points in TribhagaBala. If a child is born at the first half of the day then his horoscope will have strong Mercury with 60 points. If the birth time of a native is on the second half of the day then Sun is strong with 60 points and if the birth has taken place in the third part of a day then Saturn is strong in his horoscope with same opinions. The Moon gets 60 opinions if a child is born in the first part of the night. Venus is strong in the horoscope if a birth takes place on the second half of the night and Mars is strong with 60 points if a child is born in the third part of the night.

APPROACH TO ASTROLOGY

(c) Jyotishacharya Vinay Sheel Saxena The term Jyotisha is made up of both Astronomy and Astrology. Vedas do not speak directly about either astrology or astronomy. The Samhitasmention to the stars, groups etc. This knowledge may be engaged for various determinations. The determination depends on the user too and not just the knowledge open and there are at least four approaches to understanding the Vedic body. - AdhiYajna approach which is primarily ritual based. - AdhiDaivata approach which is primarily archetypal.

- Adhyatma approach which is primarily psycho-spiritual. - Tritaya approach or the integrated approach Vedas have a ceremonial basis too; the roots are even deeper, running into psychological, philosophical and spiritual depths. Thus we will see the various approaches to understand the Veda. The apparently different approaches are not contrary or disparate. They are coexistent in a way. Therefore the Vedic chants can be understood in more than one way and at more than one level- ritualistic, psychological and spiritual. SkandaSmrti suggests the Vedic body has three senses ('trayorthassarva-vedeshu' ). These three senses can be put up in an integrated and interrelated approach which the 'Tritaya' school of thought significances to do. Within Jyotish there is an integrated approach to astrology combining both the psychological and projecting perspectives concurrently. The famous South Indian text ' PrasnaMarga' defines the meanings of various houses (bhavas) under two categories- external (bahya) and internal (antara). Even Varahamihiraaccepts a similar approach in his 'BrihatJataka' .These 'internal' mentions the abstract psycho-spiritual phenomena/principles while the 'external' refers to the more concrete manifestation as events, persons and places. The external measures are a delay or reflection of the internal psycho-spiritual principles. Integrated approach to houses and planets shelters way to a simultaneous approach to both the psychological/ internal and predictive/ external levels of astrological understanding or practice. Moreover such an integrated approach is more in keeping with the current overall example shift. Though the spiritual foundations of Jyotisha are unchanging and timeless in some sense, the approach to astrology could be influenced by the times and the paradigm shift. A strong influence of Humanistic and/or Transpersonal psychology is increasingly evident on a large number of intellectuals during the modern times. Carl Jung's works have begun to influence some in the Jyotisha camp too, while most western astrologers are already looking at astrology through the eyes of modern psychology. Yet one should not mistake the superficial approach to psychology that some western astrologers adopt in the name of "psychological readings". Similarly one shouldn't mistake the fatalistic approach to life that some eastern astrologers adopt in the name of karma. Most Vedic astrologers feel that psychological astrology is for lesser brains who dare not predict, whilst most tropical astrologers are wary of and look down upon "fortune telling", as they refer to predicting. As an astrologer who studied and practiced both the approaches, I feel that both are wrong. How can one predict without understanding the psychological roots? On the other hand how would one be sure that all these psychological readings are right unless one is able to predict fairly well based on one's understanding of such psychological roots. After all, any science does try to predict, though in a different sense. One has to pay tribute to Indian astrology for keeping alive the tradition of predictive astrology intact. Nowhere

else in the world is astrology a continuous living tradition as it has been in India. In my opinion I feel that the primary purpose of astrology is not fortune telling, but an examination of awareness, a journey into the psyche, into the unconscious forces which stem from the past vasanas , into the 'shadow' (a term used by Carl Jung which comes close to the tantric papa purusha ), into the universe that we have within us, into the battle between the opposing forces and the process of attaining equilibrium. Of course these forces manifest as our (as well as others') reactions to situations, situations that we attract to ourselves because of these unconscious drives ( vasanas and samskaras ), which thus incidentallyinspiration our life path. Fortune telling based on such symbols of the psyche like the horoscope, dreams, omens etc is the most ordinary practice of this knowledge, although an application prone to error due to various factors. Yet astrology can help us comprehend our karma, especially the hidden or unseen factors that shape our life as our own karmic forces, and thereby encourage us to take accountability for our actions. But the maximum benefit of a study of this kind of a subject is Self-actualization or individuation- a process that supports the individual in an expression of one 'self', taking one to the final stages of Nirvana. When this happens the individual feels a sense of psychic "wholeness", which is a natural state of equilibrium. Don't the ancient texts promise that anyone who studies and teaches astrology is assured of final liberation (moksha)? That is the ultimate goal of a spiritual system like astrology.

COMBINATION OF RAHU AND NAKSHATRAS OF KETU Vedic astrology says that Ketu is considered as a natural inauspicious planet like Rahu. Ashwini, Magha and Moola are the Nakshatras of Ketu. Astrologers say that if Rahu is placed in any one of these Nakshatras then its native may face several difficulties in life. The person may have bone diseases and there are chances of snake biting so native

The Moons Nodes in Vedic Astrology

Rahu Ketu the specific name relevant to the true Nodes of the Moon. Rahu is the North Node and Ketu is the South Node. They are locations on the ecliptic where the Moon is in position with the Sun and the Earth. They point out the precise point of the balance with the three most essential factors in our life- the Sun, the Earth and the Moon. This partnership plays a key aspect in the said enfolding of individual conscious mind..

Their role as Karmic indicators of our life is connected with their power to cause eclipses. The eclipses occur in the vicinity of Rahu Ketu during the Full Moon and the New Moon. (During New Moon when it is +/- 18 degrees from Rahu Ketu, the Solar eclipse takes

place. At the full Moon +/- 11 degrees 15 from the nodal position, the Lunar eclipse takes place.) As they symbolically eclipse the Sun (consciousness) and the Moon (the Mind), they have a great part to play in darkening our perspective in order to bring in new light. They deal with the concept of death and re-birth, transformation and regeneration. During the eclipses the light from the Luminaries is darkened. The energies created are powerfully psychic, pregnant with new information and occult power. The period after the eclipse is considered a rebirth of the Sun and the Moon. The role of Rahu Ketu in this powerful alignment of the Sun Moon and the Earth gives them the role of the ultimate controllers of the destiny.

The prime importance given to Rahu Ketu in Vedic Astrology is one of its key features. They have been given the status of Planets to emphasise their significance and the importance placed on eclipses. They are known as Chayya Grahas (shadow planets). They have no substance and are physically non-existent. Yet their influence is full of potency and spiritual significance. They work in unison 180 degrees apart, two opposite points in the zodiac with a mission to churn our lives in order to externalize hidden potential and wisdom. In keeping with their shadowy nature, they work on a psychological level. It is always difficult to gauge their effect because their main concern is with our emotional makeup. They affect us internally. We are unaware of what exactly is happening to us at the time.

In Vedic Astrology, the concept of the Souls journey through different lifetimes is central to it. The final goal of the soul is to break this cycle of life and death. Like the beads on a necklace, various lifetimes are joined together to form a necklace, each life being different but interconnected by an invisible thread. The invisible thread is Rahu and Ketu. The purpose of the soul in this life to act out his given Karma, destroy the illusions of the materialistic life and move towards the pursuit of self realization. To live on the astral planes where pleasure and pain do not have the capacity to hurt, the mind is still and at peace. The souls journey in a particular life time and its connection with eternal life is indicated by the position of Rahu and Ketu. Ketu deals with the past Karma and Rahu with the future.

The five instincts that keep us attached to the materialistic purpose of life are Kaam (Desire, passions) Krodh (Anger) Madh (intoxicants- drugs, alcohol etc) Moh (Attachment) Lobh(Greed) and Matsaya(Jealousy). We need to control our instincts rather than allowing ourselves to be controlled by them. Both Rahu and Ketu have the ability to keep our mind focused on these instincts- Rahu by exaggerating and Ketu by obscuring or blocking. We are tied down to the cycle of unhappiness and dissatisfaction as we cannot break away from our lower selves. We are born again and again to experience the pleasures and pains of the earthly life until we recognise them to be the

illusions that they are. On a subconscious level we are afraid that if we give up these desires, we will lose out. Once we start understanding the principle of letting go, enjoying what life has to offer but not getting attached, then we are able to grow spiritually. Rahu Ketu deals with the inner fight within us, the moral and the social choices we have to constantly make and the inner dilemmas. The Mythology

There are many Myths and legends attached to Rahu Ketu. The most well known one is of Rahu Ketu as the Naga Vasuki- the ruler of the Patala Loka (the nether regions of the earth). Nagas in Vedic literature are not ordinary snakes but Serpents with much hidden knowledge and wisdom. There was a great war between the gods and the demons for the control of the universe and at the centre of it was the ocean which was being churned to find the hidden treasures and the Amrita- the nectar of immortality. Vasuki helped the gods in their mission. He was the rope tied around the spiritual mountain Mandara, which was the rod, used by the gods to churn the ocean.

When the Amrita was found the gods wanted to keep it for themselves as they felt that the demons would use it for the wrong purpose. Vasuki being a demon, his instincts were for personal glorification and materialistic happiness rather than universal good. (Sacrificing self for others is considered the godly impulse). Vasuki, was more intelligent than the other demons, he was not willing to be distracted by the gods. He drank the nectar of immortality secretly. The Sun and the Moon complained to Lord Vishnu, the creator of the Universe, who was very angry at this deception. In anger he threw the Sudharshan Chakra at Vasuki and cut him into two. Vasuki had drunk the Amrita and was immortal, therefore could not be killed. He remained in the skies as Rahu(the head)Ketu (the lower half), a permanent reminder to the other planets(gods) of the darker side of life which we have to defeat in the pursuit of immortality.

Rahu Ketu are considered great enemies of the Sun and the Moon because they told Lord Vishnu about them. They symbolically swallow the two luminaries during the eclipses. Their capacity to darken the Sun and the Moon make Rahu Ketu the most powerful influences in the Zodiac. The Sun around whom the other planets and the solar system revolves, the Moon which controls life on earth, are obscured by Rahu Ketu during eclipses. Rahu Ketu represent Cosmic Law which everyone including the Sun and the Moon have to obey.

This allegory has to be understood as life. The Gods without the help of Vasuki (Rahu Ketu) could not find the secret of immortality. In the same way we as humans cannot find our higher selves without understanding the lessons of Rahu and Ketu. They represent the darker side of our nature which we need to overcome. Our inner emotions are like the ocean being churned. Within this ocean lie a number of treasures as well as poisons and nasty things. We have learn to recognise the precious from the dross and finally find Amrita- the secret of immortality or true happiness. The conflict between our attachment to materialistic achievements (this gives us momentary happiness which is a fantasy as it has no real basis, the domain of Rahu) and liberation of the soul, finding bliss and tranquillity which is eternal and everlasting (Ketu is the Moksha karaka significator for spiritual realisation). The gods needed the help of Vasuki in the Amrita manthan and in the same way we need the knowledge provided by the wise nodes to give direction.

Understanding Rahu and Ketu in our Natal Charts

To understand the influence of Rahu Ketu in our chart we must learn about their shadow nature. This is the most important factor in when dealing with the influence of the nodes. They are only points in the Zodiac therefore they are unable to enact their effect on their own. The nodes take on the characteristics of their dispositor as they have no substance themselves. It is very important to study the sign, position and placement of the depositor. Here it is important to understand that although the nodes are influenced by their depositor, the depositor itself carries forward the influence of the nodes. The basic results of Rahu- Ketu are modified by their location in your chart. The signs/ houses they are placed in. The aspects they receive and the aspects they throw out. Also if they are in conjunction with another planet (note in Vedic Astrology a planet in the same house is considered conjunct. The closer the conjunction the stronger the influence.) they will throw out its influence. For example if Rahu is in conjunction with Mars it will throw the aspect of Mars along with that of its depositor.

Rahu Ketu are the personal eclipse points. Therefore they are areas where you need to work out your Karma, past as well as future. They are our Karmic responsibilities. We have to learn to look beyond the momentary darkness that Rahu Ketu represent. They highlight the negative side of our nature which we need to overcome to move towards the spiritual growth. They work psychologically, therefore it is hard to pin- point their effect. They are the axis of life which indicates the path of spiritual growth from past life ( Ketu) to the Future (Rahu). Knowledge of both the past and present are needed for true understanding of life. The past shapes the personality we are now, the negative and the positive Karma we are going to experience. It shades our psyche to how we are going to tackle the present. The future is always uncertain therefore can seem like darkness and carry fear and uncertainty within it. We have to really come to terms with our past to be

able to not get afraid of the future. Rahu is showing this direction, Ketu is sometime blocking due to our actions of the past.

Rahu Ketu have twin purpose, one in the mundane life and another in the spiritual life but it is intertwined, like their shadowy nature. Their actions in the material realm are meant so that we change our thoughts and ideas about what we want and desire. What is darkness to a person enmeshed in materialistic ambitions can be powerful spiritual energy for those on the path of Moksha and spiritual enlightenment.

The nodes always serves opposing purposes- good and bad, lots and nothing, give and take. Rahu gives, Ketu takes back. The are no straight rules about them. They operate in so many different colours which can lead you to the highest spiritual pinnacle to the greatest financial achievements or vice versa. They can give contrary results. You can never give predictions dealing with surety.

They can create fear of the unknown. They can create sudden and unexpected results.

The saying is that Rahu Ketu always take away what they give because they have a special reason for granting you your wishes. To realise that what they give is not necessarily what you want once you have achieved it. They highlight dissatisfaction within ourselves.

RAHU
Vedic Hymn to Rahu

Rahu is snake shaped, born of a lioness and a devourer of the Sun and the Moon Rahu is the head part of the celestial snake. This hymn refers to Rahu being snake shaped. The snakes are given great importance in Vedic mythology. Lord Shiva has a snake around his neck, Lord Vishnus throne was Shesh Naga the Eternal Serpent.

Shesh Naga represents the cycles of time and space which the seed of cosmic creation. The Nagas are shaped like snakes but stand tall. The Nagas are highly evolved beings. They are wise, but their wisdom can be used for both good and bad. The Naga sheds his skin, this symbolises transformation,re-birth. The snakes in Vedic literature remind people of their mortality.

The devouring of the Sun and Moon are when Rahu eclipses the luminaries. This shows the important part Rahu has to play in changing the course of our life. The Sun and Moon are Royal planets under whose dictates the universe and life on earth revolves. But Rahu can darken this light, therefore it controls the process of life. The Sun is the Soul and Moon the Mind, when they are eclipsed, they go through regeneration, transformation and death.

Rahu takes people off their Dharmic past path to tempt them on the road of self destruction. But Rahu has a very definite purpose in doing so. It wants you to learn, taste and feel everything so that from the full satiation of your senses you turn a new leaf on the path of self realisation and find their true enlightenment. Rahu on a physical plane gives you insatiable desire to achieve, to conquer. Once you have reached the pinnacle of achievement, you realise this success you have achieved has not brought with it happiness because you were in fact chasing an illusion. There are many cults in India which preach satiation of all your mundane and carnal desires so that we can learn the important lesson of fulfilment of all your desires do not give you the true happiness. Rahu signifies foreigners in all fields- people, countries, tastes. Rahu behaves like Saturn. It deals with drugs, poisons, over ambition, power play, hidden knowledge, Rahus element is air. It deals with all aspects of air related activities air travel, Air accidents, Aviation, Pilots etc. Other significations of Rahu include students of Astrology, metaphysical knowledge, witchcraft, skin diseases, small pox, deception, politics, political manoeuvre, inventions, scientists, execution, diseases, disenchantment etc.

Rahu and the Nakshatras Rahu Ketu rule 3 Nakshtras (fixed stars) each. Rahu rules Ardra ( 6 degree 40 to 20 degrees 00 Gemini), Swati ( 6 degrees 40 to 20 degrees 00 Libra) and Shatabishak (6 degrees 40 to 20 degrees 00Aquarius), all in the Air triplicity . Mercury, Venus and

Saturn represent intellectualism, pleasure and righteous behaviour. Rahu has the capacity to bestow in all these areas. As the ruler of the fixed star Ardra( 6 degree 40 to 20 degrees 00 Gemini), Rahu represents the highest thinking, Ardra is the Nakshatra where we begin our learning about the natures law. Ardra is in 6 degree 40 to 20 degrees Gemini a sign ruled by Mercury. At the cosmic stage of Ardra, there is conflict on the outer level where we are dissatisfied with our present surrounding, so we start looking for answers. This can be through knowledge, occult and communication The duality of Gemini as well as the celestial powers of Mercury are present. Ardras symbol is of a head or a single jewel. both symbolising ideas, mind and thinking. Rahu is always about matchless ambition and in Ardra it combines it with the capacity for knowledge. Planets in Ardra get motivated towards greater occult learning. Rudra, the God of Destruction is Ardras presiding Diety.. Rudra is a form of Shiva. Rudras mission is to destroy ignorance, therefore he directs the consciousness towards knowledge and finding the answers for ourselves about this manifestation. At Ardra we start to study or learn about the Law of Nature. The first time we become dissatisfied with the materialistic nature of our lives and start towards expanding the horizons of our spiritual selves. The Second Nakshatra ruled by Rahu is Swati ( 6 degrees 40 to 20 degrees 00 Libra) Planets in Swati indicate the depth of the souls involvement in Materialism. The indicator of the soul in our chart, the Sun, is debilitated here and Saturn the worker of the Zodiac is exalted here. Under Swati, the impulse is all about material gain. Venus rules the earthly needs in an individual. Combining it with Rahu it adds further to the desire for success, wealth and finance. Many millionaires are born with their Moons or Saturn in Swati. The presiding diety is Vayu (air). The Symbol is Coral. The location of this Nakshatra in Libra indicates that the experience of full involvment into earthy, materialistic pleasures will bring with it dissatisfaction because the scales will be heavy to one side. Once success is achieved we feel empty, alone and dissatisfied with our achievement, many try for more success but the correct thing would be to look towards your higher self at this time. Libra is a stage of life when we start thinking about the spiritual meaning of life but only once the other urges have been fulfilled.

Shatabishak( 6 degrees 40 to 20 degrees 00Aquarius) is the final Nakshatra ruled by Rahu. Aquarius is ruled by Saturn and Rahus rulership of the Nakshtra makes a very difficult combination where life has to have a purpose and the total direction is about learning lessons. Rahu gives results like Saturn but on a psychological level. This double Saturnine influence on planets placed here is difficult to handle unless our activities are directed towards service to humanity. Here both Rahu and Saturn are concerned about changing our purpose of life, giving us the final answers. Rahu on the internal level and Saturn on an external level offers restrictions, obstacles and transformation. The need to understand the final lessons of life as well as duty to others are two of the important aspects of Shatabishak. Its symbol is the thousand petalled flower, Shatabishak is where the Kundalini flowers and we reach towards the full awareness of our consciousness. This

is the stage in life where we activate the Sahasara (Crown) Chakra. Rahu brings forth its full power as the teacher of cosmic law. When the Moon is in Shatabishak, its materialistic tendencies are shed completely and we moves towards the true purpose of life. We are ready to transcend to the next phase of spiritual development.

All the quarters of Rahus Nakshatra are ruled by Jupiter and Saturn, the significators of spirituality and occult initiation. They are Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Each pada (quarter) represents the ninth harmonic of the natal chart. Together these four signs represent the final stages of spiritual development. As the Rahu Nakshatras represent a point in cycle of life where we are starting to change, these padas further indicate that life on an internal level remain the same again. Sagittarius is the level when man learns to control the base emotions, changes from animal to human, at Capricorn we learn about the duties and responsibilities to others, Aquarius represents the stage of development where we are now privy to full knowledge. At Pisces we are able to make the final change, sow the seeds for future growth. So although the stages of the souls journey are different in Ardra ( Gemini) Swati ( Libra) and Shatabishak( Aquarius) the underlying urge, represented by the quarters, is still the same- to evolve. The ending of one way of life and the beginning of another.

KETU

Vedic Hymn to Ketu

Decked with silk, flowers, garlands, sandal paste and an umbrella, of variegated colour, born of Jaiminis family under Abhijit Nakshatra

Ketu is the lower part of the celestial snake.

This hymn shows the main difference between Rahu and Ketu, Rahu is dark in colour but Ketu has a variegated colour. Therefore it has the capacity to shine a light on you suddenly, bring about enlightenment.

Ketu is born to the Jaimini family who followed the Mimasa school of philosophy. Their main concern was the correct interpretations of the vedic rituals and settling any

controversies about the Vedic texts. Ketu himself is guiding towards meditation of the nature of creation, intuitiveness, the true understanding of universe and the guidance of the soul towards its final salvation or Moksha.

Ketu causes great impediments in your paths. It sets up roadblocks, traffic jams, boulders in your journey of life. It causes pain. It wants to change your psyche. You learn to leave your excess baggage of past Karma behind. Travel lightly into your this existence so that you can understand there are areas of your life which need to address and some left behind. Those unable to harness the power of Ketu or understand its karmic path can be lead to a sorrowful existence. Sometimes it is difficult for any one do stand in the way of Ketu power. We need to accept and understand the divine plan which is part of our destiny and Ketu is doing its work to produce in you the enlightenment which would lead to true enlightenment and honour. The effect of the Ketu problems are like the going through the ritual of fire from which one comes out stronger more powerful to be able to take on the problems thrown at us

Ketu will act like Mars and so will its dispositor. Fiery in nature, it signifies accidents or injury specially due to fire.

Ketu rules 7 years in the planetary life cycle. Ketu always has a sting in its tale. So the ending of Ketu Maha Dasha one has to be vary of unexpected happening

Ketu is considered the keeper of the book of our life- past and present Karmas.

Ketu is known as Dhwajah- flag. Its association with in dignity with a planet has the capacity to boost its capabilities- good or bad beyond recognition for lotteries and windfall. Ketu in conjunction with a benefic can give beyond your wildest expectations. Some of the signification of Ketu are Ascetics, assassinations, trouble through cats, calirvoyance, contemplation, desire for knowledge, deep thinking, imprisonment, poison, intrigues, magical powers, poverty, mysticism etc. Ketu and the Nakshatras

The Nakshatras Ketu rules are Ashwini (Aries), Magha (Leo) and Mula (Sagittarius), the fire triplicity. These are the beginning stages in the cycles of life. Mars, Sun and Jupiter the rulers of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are friends with each other. Together they represent strength, the soul and wisdom, Ketu has the capacity to give in these areas. A proper blending of these three planets in our natal charts direct us towards seeking Moksha- the final liberation from the cycle of life and death. Aries deals with birth, a new life, freshness of approach and start of the cycle of Life. 0 degrees to 13 degrees 20 is Ashwini, the first Nakshatra ruled by Ketu. Ashwini indicates the beginning of the souls journey into the earthly life. Ketus rulership of this part of the Zodiac is full of occult significations. Ketu is the significator for Moksha. The beginning part of life indicated by Aries ruled by Ketu Nakshatra shows that the true reason of our manifestation on earth is to find the Moksha- the final salvation from the cycles of life and death. This is the stage where mind is pure and we have not yet entangled ourselves into knots which represent the attachment to life. Sun, the signifactor of the soul, our inner consciousness is exalted in Ashwini. Ashwini is in Aries ruled by Mars. Ketu acts like Mars but on a psychological level so the purity of Martian action, courage and protection of humanity is powerfully indicated by the planets located here. The past life connection is very strong as Ketu, specially if the Moon is located here.

Magha is the second Nakshatra ruled by Ketu. Magha is in the sign of Leo ( 0 degrees to 13 degrees 20 Leo) ruled by the Sun. Magha is the beginning of the second cycle in the souls Journey. The signs Leo to Scorpio indicate the souls full involvement into the pleasures and pains of the earthly life. Ketu, the significator of spiritual realisation ruling the commencing point of the materialistic journey shows the importance of the experience of the realities of life in fulfilling the divine mission of the Soul. Maghas ruling deity is Pitris, who are the fathers of humanity whose mission is to guide their children to the right course of life. The fathers only interfere if you are going off the right path. Ketu and Pitris both guide the soul towards its special mission in life. Planets in Magha are idealistic even if their mission is to fulfil their materialistic needs. This does create misunderstandings at times. Others suspect their honour and sincerity. Magha gives a lot materially, but the person ruled by Magha knows intuitively that the material happiness is only an experience, he still needs to follow the inner purpose of life and move towards Moksha.

Mula is the third Nakshatra ruled by Ketu. Mula is 0 degrees to 13 degrees 20 Sagittarius. This is the start of the final part of the Souls mission towards finding the answers that will lead to his breaking away from the cycles of life and death. This is one of the most difficult Nakshatra for planets to be situated in specially the Moon. The deity that rules Mula is Nittriti, the goddess of death and destruction. This personifies the

destruction of the material sheaths and the foundation on which the spiritual enfoldment can be undertaken. The pain experienced by the influence of Mula changes the personality. Attachment to the lower nature and material tendencies have to be severed so that a new spiritual beginning can happen. This is the Nakshatra of initiation towards spiritual realisation. Ketu fulfills its role as Moksha karaka by arousing the soul towards its ultimate destination. Mula means root and it also is Muladhara chakra (Base Chakra) where the Kundalini power lies dormant and has to be activated. Ketu rules this and Rahu with its rulership of Shatabishak- the Crown Chakra indicate the real spiritual insight provided by the nodes. At times they create powerful negativity to focus your mind towards the absolute knowledge.

The quarters of Ketus Nakshatras are ruled by Mars, Venus, Gemini and the Moon. Mars is courage, Venus- the guide to material fulfilment, Mercury the pure intellect and Moon, the emotional Mind. The signs these planets rule are Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer- the four sign that lead the soul towards experiencing the life on earth. Each pada (quarter) represents the ninth harmonic of the natal chart. Together these four signs represent the beginning stages of spiritual development. As the Ketu Nakshatras represent a point in cycle of life where we have to move towards the divine mission of the soul. They always indicate a beginning and an ending at two different levels. Aries is about discovery of new ideas and the courage to explore them. Taurus is where we nurture the creative potential of our new beginnings. Gemini develops the mind and the recognition of time, space, the working of the universal law. Cancer makes time and space possible. It is ruled by the Moon and Water which also leads us towards purification of mind and harmonising the spiritual and the material. The stages of the souls journey are different in Ashwini (Mars) Magha (Leo) and Mula (Sagittarius) the underlying urge, represented by the quarters, is still the same- to evolve. The ending of one way of life and the beginning of another.

Kal Sarpa Yoga

Kala Sarpa Yoga is formed when Rahu Ketu hem in the planets in the natal chart i.e. if Rahu is 10 degrees Leo and Ketu 10 degrees Aquarius and all the planets are within these degrees, either from Leo to Aquarius or Aquarius to Leo (Vedic Astrology does not use the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto). For this yoga to be complete, no planet should conjunct Rahu or Ketu. It restricts completely any indications of the charts. However capable the person, his life is impeded due to past Karma. Important lessons have to be faced in this life, where no amount of effort is rewarded, obstacles are encountered at every junction for inexplicable reasons.

The Yoga does not suggest either success or failure, but a person caught up in Karmic forces so great that they restrict his/ her destiny. It acts mysteriously, without other indications in the birth Chart. A heavy price is paid for past Karma in this life. Understanding and counter- acting the effects of Kala Sarpa Yoga needs a person to move towards his higher self. As Rahu and Ketu act on the inner self, the need to understand the psychic implications and the inner blocks created by this combination is important. Transits To judge the transits of Rahu Ketu we have to look at the planets they conjunct during their transit. The Sun and Moon being the most important planets. In 1998 when Rahu Ketu are transiting through the Leo Aquarius Axis, people with Leo Sun, Moon, Ascendant and Aquarius Sun, Moon, Ascendant are feeling the transforming effect of Rahu Ketu. The transit of Rahu Ketu gives clues to their unpredictability. They normal travel in a retrograde motion, the opposite to other planets. They will suddenly go direct and backwards again, representing the churning process. They can churn up your life, your inner emotion, force you to transform yourself, create unpredictability in your life. To know exactly how powerful their influence will be, you will have to study the eclipses. If the eclipses are taking place within 1to 2 degrees of your natal planets then they will be indicating a time for change. Here it is important to remember that the eclipses work on a psychological level, some of these influence may not be immediately obvious but will reveal themselves in time.

The transit of Rahu also needs to be seen through their Dashas- planetary cycles. They are each assigned a Mahadasha. Rahu has an 18 year period and Ketu a 7 years period. They also have sub- periods in planetary cycles of other planets through which they exercise their power and influence. Whenever the life cycles come into our life they have the overall control over factors which dictate what we are going to be doing

Kal Sarpa Yoga-Discussions

Dear all, Now that we know the types and forms of Kal Sarpa Yoga, let us see few examples pf this yoga and a general understanding, how to deal with it. Kala Sarpa Yoga/Kala Amrita Yoga(KSY/KAY) When all planets are enclosed between Rahu & Ketu, or Ketu & Rahu respectively. E.g. of KSY

Nelson Mandela, Carl Sagan, Pope Jules II, Pope Gregory XIII, Benito Mussolini (Dictator of Italy from 1922-1943) etc, E.g. of KAY Singer Yesudas, Margaret Thatcher, G.W.Bush, People with KSY or KAY like status but one or more planet outside. Mahatma gandhi ji, Tony Blair, Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Adolph hitler, Ronald reagan, Bill Clinton, Deepak Chopra, Bill gates, and the list is endless. Quote: B V Raman: Rahu must occupy one of the first six houses from the lagna, i.e., bhava 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Kala-Sarpa yoga does not apply even if one planet is outside the Rahu -Ketu Axis. If one planet is outside the axis results are good in the form of leadership or activism for social change.Though the person himself is in the trap of excessive desire, he is able to cut loose and help those who are helpless or not in a position to cut loose. E.g. Mahatma Gandhi jee, Jupiter is outside, which made him world class compassionate leader. (This is true for Jupiter or Venus) All The above leaders have KSY/KAY with one planet outside or planets occupying same rasi as Rahu or Ketu. Literary Meaning: "Kal" means "earth-time" and "sarpa" means "serpent". One view is, it is actually Sarpa energy which is again psychic energies of gods and goddesses of underworld, and it is believed that these sarpa are immense, ancient serpentlike deities who control the psychic shield around our planet Earth.Sarpa are entities, of a much higher vibration than human beings, and definitely not to be confused with the common reptile snakes! This energy can be controlled by psychic skill, that means one has to condition his or her mind in such a way that the negative thoughts emanating from deep within are neutralized and do not effect the psyche of the person, to pull yourself above mundane happenings. History: Rahu and Ketu gained importance in the Jyotisha around 600-800 AD i.e. long after the classics. like BPHS, Saravali, etc. Beliefs: Kala-Sarpa yoga is associated with dreadful experiences like suffering from delays, hardships, obsessive habits, excessive desires, poisons, catastrophes, sudden and disastrous changes in every aspect of life, homelessness, not suitable for marriage, employment etc. (Cause for manipulation by few astrologers. )

Cancellation: Even if one planet is outside the Rahu -Ketu axis. If other Raja yogas exist. If other planets are strong and corresponding dasa is in effect. If planets present in the same house with higher degrees than Rahu or Ketu. If Lagna is outside. Actual effect: During Rahu-Ketu dasa, and transits particularly if Rahu is in lagna. Roller coaster kind of life with great falls after great achievements. People with KSY/KAY are very sensitive and to defend themselves they use means which are Anti to normal society. If they channel this energy in a proper way they can follow people like Deepak Chopra. During Rahu/Ketu periods, People with KSY/KAY can have severe identity crisis and should take precautions by monitoring their negative feelings particularly in case of criticism from others. Strong planets: If other planets are strong, people with KSY/KAY live a normal life with normal career and families etc. Worst effects: when Rahu in the lagna so Ketu is in 7, if married both spouses are affected and might take to anti-social life due to acute negativity. Raman: "evil gets intensified if lagna is between Ketu & Rahu" whereas "evil is almost neutralized if lagna is between Rahu & Ketu". If houses involved are - 1/7, 2/8, 4/10, 5/11, or 6/12 - have a significant KSY effects. If it is 1/7 axis: inauspicious for marital happiness. As per Raman the Marital life becomes oppressive and marred by frequent classes and want of understanding. " and can be avoided through conscious understanding. If it is 2/8: The native will go through many ups and downs financially - often great wealth, wiped out, and rebuilt several times. If it is 4/10: Setbacks in career (If10th-rashi or 10-lord is not strong). If it is 5/11: Difficulties with children. birth defects or accidental deaths for children. If it is 6/12: betrayal by colleagues or family members. According to Raman in Three Hundred Important Combinations, (p. 327) the 6/12 position "could indicate incarceration, or spiritual elevation, depending on the presence or absence of powerful Bandhana Yogas. BV Raman: "Kala Sarpa Yoga has its bright shades. It makes one industrious, hardworking, and aware of ones own ability- despite mental restlessness. It raises the natives to top positions in their respective fields provided of course other Raja Yogas are present.

Rahu-Ketu axis favors rise in mundane life while Ketu-Rahu axis indicates elevation in spiritual matters. Suffering due to developments in life strengthens the mind and mellows down ones outlook. This is a blessing of Kala Sarpa Yoga. No single yoga, including Kala Sarpa Yoga, is capable of marring or making a horoscope. No single yoga could ever control an entire chart KSY is a yoga and not a dosha or curse: Rahu's lord directs the life of the native and Rahu is known for breaking normal set rules in a normal society, so a person with this yoga might go through a period particularly during Rahu-Ketu transits and dasas, causing acute negativity causing frustrations even in mundane events of life, Rahu is know to give a person a fearless attitude to cut loose all those borders of social decency. so basically it is a negative thought process circulating in the mind, native should try to let this negativity move out of his head, in way it is management of psychic energies and sensitivities. As Rahu enhances the phala of the lord of the house it is posited in. Venus - All desires for beautiful things enhanced to extreme. Mars- Too much focus. Mercury- Communication- Too much talking for perfection Moon- Too sensitive, too fickle minded Sun- Too much concern about self image and leadership. Jupiter- Obsession in learning or imparting knowledge to others. Sani- Claim too much credit or try for impossible achievements. In a way Rahu enhances the planetary lords traits and Ketu subdues them, so during Rahu periods the native is too focused and during Ketu periods native will have foggy focus. Planets if outside Rahu-Ketu axis: If one of the following planets is outside the axis. Sun: strong leadership dharma and moral philosophy Moon: compassion for the masses, upliftment of suffering people. Mars: gifted social leader, fight injustice upliftment for the downtrodden. Mercury: calculating mind, detailed planning and upliftment of masses from ignorance. Jupiter: extraordinary wisdom, criminal psychologist. Venus: upliftment through arts and music. Saturn: Risk taking to averse social injustice but in case no good planets are available, native might resort to injustice himself. Remedies: Since it has to do with state of mind, take care of it by meditation, spirituality, positive thinking, developing positive habits, and avoiding negative thoughts.

These remedies might look rediculous and very meaningless but the person going through the effects of Kal Sarpa Yoga or Rahu -Ketu effects only knows the pain so no matter how rediculour they sound, it is not that difficult to do most of them, atleast none of them ask to climb mount Everest and wait for Lord Shiva, and regarding the benefits of the said remedies only a native going through the difficult phase would know if they worked or not and sometimes the benefit is so small that it is not visible and sometime it is immense and it is visible like a sun rise, but lot has to do with your mind and how you take things. All the best, May Lord Shiva save us from difficult times. Regards J.s.sandhu -Patiala Namaste All, The best remedy suggested by Sanjay Ji for the Kaala Amrita Yoga (KAY) is to read about the "Matsya Avataram" and also to recite the mantra given in Srimad Bhagavatam 5.18.25. Today, after about 3 years, I have found the answer to my own question about the Mantra, so thought of sharing with you. The Mantra and its meaning Bhaktivedanta VedaBase: rmad Bhgavatam 5.18.25 om namo bhagavate mukhyatamya namah sattvya prnyaujase sahase balya mahmatsyya nama iti SYNONYMS om O my Lord; namah respectful obeisances; bhagavate unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead; mukhya-tamya the first incarnation to appear; namah my respectful obeisances; sattvya unto the pure transcendence; prnya the origin of life; ojase the source of the potency of the senses; sahase the origin of all mental power; balya the origin of bodily strength; mah-matsyya unto the gigantic fish incarnation; namah respectful obeisances; iti thus. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is pure transcendence. He is the origin of all life, bodily strength, mental power and sensory ability. Known as Matsyvatra, the gigantic fish incarnation, He appears first among all the incarnations. Again I offer my obeisances unto Him. PURPORT rla Jayadeva Gosvm sings: pralayo payodhi-jale dhrtavn asi vedam vihita-vahitra-caritram akhedam keava dhrta-mna-arra jaya jagad-a hare Soon after the cosmic creation, the entire universe was inundated with water. Therefore Manu addresses Lord Matsya as mukhyatama, the first Regards J.s.sandhu Nava Naaga Stotra The natives who are under the grip of Kala Sarpa Dosha, Naga Dosha, Rahu and Ketu Dosha are advised to recite the following mantra daily 22 times to ward of the negative effects and to overcome hurdles. The Sthotra have to be recited both in the morning and in evening. Stothra Anantam Vasukim Sesha Padmanbhacha Kambalam Shankupalam Drutharastramch Takshanam Kaaliyam Thada Phala Sruthi Etani nava navaami naganancha mahatmana Sayam patenityam prathakaale visheshita Tasya vishabhayam naasti sarvatra vijayaa bhaveth Regards J.s.sandhu Conditions for KSY AND KAY. A simple analysis to identify the same. Let me clarify. First of all, check the following conditions. 1) All planets between Rahu and Ketu 2) No planet is with Rahu 3) No planet is with Ketu 4) No planet in the Lagna

5) No planet in the 7th house If any of the conditions above are not met, the chart does not have either KSY or KAY. (Kal sarp Yoga, Kal amrita yoga) If ALL of these conditions are met, the next step is to see which of the yogas it is, KSY or KAY. The process for that is, as I mentioned before, 1) Start from Rahu 2) Traverse the chart in the zodiacal direction. This is the normal direction that the planets move in, and goes from Aries to Taurus to Gemini to Cancer etc. 3.a)If the next entity encountered is Ketu, this means that all the planets are between Ketu and Rahu. This is Kala Sarpa Yoga. 3.b)If the next entity encountered is a planet other than Ketu, this means that the planets are all between Rahu and Ketu. this is kalamrita yoga. My visual crutch for remembering this is to visualize planets going towards either Rahu or Ketu. If there are all hurling towards Rahu, the native is veering towards Rahu's materialism, which makes it Kala Sarpa yoga, since Rahu represents the Sarpa, or poison. On the other hand, if the planets are all moving towards Ketu, it is Kala Amrita yoga, since Ketu represents Moksha or Amrita. My outline above is based on the progression of the planets, but you get the same result if you consider the movement of Ra and Ke instead. 1) Start from Rahu again 2) Traverse the direction that Rahu (and Ketu) move in, i.e. go in the anti-zodiacal direction. This means if you start from Aries, go to Pisces, Aquarius etc. 3.a) If you encounter a planet other than ketu, this means that this planet is being "swallowed up" by Rahu in its progression - again

indicating Kala Sarpa yogam. 3.b) If the first planet you encounter is Ketu, and then you encounter the other planets, this means that Ketu is "swallowing up" the other planets in its movement, i.e. the desire for Moksha is comsuming the indications of all other planets, and the native will eventually reach Moksha. This is Kal Regards J.s.sandhu Dear Sir in the kaal sarp or kaal amrit yoga if jupiter is breaking this yoga then 1.it would mean through some guru or spiritual organisation. am i right? so should such a person be advised to join organisations like ISCKON or others? Visti: It means they should get a Guru. Whether this is through an organisation or not is not really of concern unless the particular planet (Jupiter) is in or lording the fourth from arudha lagna. 2.in female chart jupiter would also signify marriage or husband. am i right in my assumption? Visti: Specifically husband. 3. is it possible to time the beginning and end of kaal sarp yoga in a chart especially when there are planets breaking it. Visti: Yes. 4. in the following chart ketu occupies the upapada so is it true that when ketu accupies the upapada or any arudha pada then counting of houses from UL is reversed? Visti: Yes. 5. is it true that in the following chart wearing a green emerald for mercury would be dangerous and hence not advisable as its placed in 12th from the AL? birth details:29th november, 1987. 00:55 am jaipur, rajasthan, india. Visti: It would certainly risk causing job loss hence no advised.

6. does placement of UL in house affected by ksy as in this chart imply that marriage will play a role in breaking the ksy? Visti: If there are benefics there then yes. If none then the Marriage itself can add to the bondage of the KSY. 7.is it true that if planets breaking the kaal sarp yoga if debilitated in navamsha, would be ineffective in breaking the yoga due to their weakness? Visti: You can say that. I.e. the person who is in the Talas due to Ananta (nodes) blocking the rays of the Sun and Moon, and there fore requires the help of Ananta or the Mahavidya to come out of these Talas. And if that Mahavidya feels that he has done adharma to Vishnu, then its very difficult to overcome the Dosha. But I know one person who did it in 3 months... my wife. She has, just like you mentioned, Venus breaking the Kala Amrita Yoga, and Venus is also debilitated in Navamsa. Her example is given in the article on my website. 8. is it true that partners with kaal sarp yoga or kaal amrita yoga tend to make better partners due to karmic connections, considering this factor in isolation from the rest. Visti: Funny question. Rather the point is that 'birds of the same feather tend to flock together'. It doesn't mean the partnerships are good as a result... this is not a means of performing match making. Dear all , I am posting another article that pooh ,poohs the concept of kaal sarp dosh,What i feel is that kaal sarp dosh does have a significant factor in ones destiny, however the malefic effects of this yoga become more evident and pronounced during Md , Ad of rahu ketu, shani, sadesati and kantaka Saturn. The Mystery of Kal Sarpa Yoga unveiled Introduction In the recent times, Kal Sarpa Yoga has become the most common point of discussion in the country. It is said that this is most ominous combination, all the beneficial roles of planets are destroyed & the native having Kal Sarpa yoga in his chart is said to be suffering through all kind of hardships throughout his life, while his hardship doesnt yield any good result. Now lets see what is the combination of this Kal Sarpa yoga? It is said that if all the planets are between Rahu & Ketu, then it becomes Kal Sarpa Yoga, giving result to an ominous combination. However, books are being published under this name, with suggested remedies etc. while astrologers keep themselves busy by discussing about this topic in newspapers, television & internet with the relevant information they have about the effects of this yoga. The word, Kal Sarpa itself frightens anybody as the Kal (meaning a bad period) takes the form of Sarpa (Snake) & troubles the native. For no reason, even the astrologers of today are talking about the frightening effects of Kal Sarpa Yoga. Some of the results, which they opine are, the natives fate is damned, he cannot earn name & fame in his/hers life, may not get a job or his/hers work atmosphere will never be good, may suffer from financial problems, problems in having offspring etc. all such craps. According to the modern orators of Kal Sarpa Yoga, if all the planets are within the half of Rahu & Ketu or if one or more planets are with Rahu or Ketu, while the others are in between, then it is, Purna Kal Sarpa Yoga (Total Kal Sarpa yoga). However if six planets are in between Rahu & Ketu, while another one is located in the other half, then it is termed as, Ardha Kal Sarpa Yoga (Partial Kal Sarpa Yoga). Some of them say that people born with Partial Kal Sarpa Yoga lead more disastrous life than people having Total Kal Sarpa Yoga. Searching the classics for the existence of KSY Whenever a problem arises, we consult the classics of Vedic astrology, but in this case the problem is that we dont find anything regarding Kal Sarpa Yoga in Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Jaiminisutram, Brihat Jatakam, Uttar Kalamrita, Phaladeepika, Jatak Parijat, Sarbartha Chintamani, Bhabartharatnakar, Jatakabharanam, Sanketnidhi, Bhabakutuhalam, Manasagari Paddhati, even the modern Astro books like, jataktatwa etc. dont speak anything about this Kal Sarpa Yoga. Pundit Shree P.S. Sastri discussed about Kal Sarpa Yoga in the Astrological magazine published from Bangalore in the volume of December 1965, October 1987 & September 1994. While discussing about KSY, Mr. Sastri quoted a sloka, but didnt mention about its root. However he admitted that classics dont talk KSY. The sloka he quoted is as

under:agre rhu ante ketu sarbe madhyagat grah| yogam klasarpkhyam npa asya binanam|| -the meaning is quite clear. If rahu is at front & ketu is at last while all other planets are in between, then this combination is called Kal Sarpa Yoga & results into death of king of destruction of grains. It is clear that the above mentioned sloka has nothing to do with personal astrology (Jatak Jyotish) & is related to mundane astrology (Rashtriya Jyotish). In that same magazine, another writer supported this combination by refering it to classics like Brihat Jatakam by Varahamihira & he wrote about Sarpa Yoga, the condition of which is Sun, Mars & Saturn in kendras while the rest of the planets in houses other than kendras, & this combination is mentioned in the chapter of nabhas Yoga of Brihat Jatakam, Saravali by KalyanVarma, & in the texts of Badarayan, Manish & Garga etc. We know that Varahamihira has discussed about the existence of Sarpa Yoga in his Brihat Jatakam(chapter of Nabhas Yogas). According to him, if malefics are in Kendras then that combination is known as Sarpa Yoga, & he has taken the name of Maharshi Parasara to support this yoga. Bhattotpal, commentator of Brihat Jatakam, also named Mahrshi Manish & Badarayan. However, this yoga didnt include Rahu & Ketu, as in the texts of Varahamihira, Rahu or Ketu hasnt been accepted or any importance. Bhattotpal has made it clear about the condition for Sarpa Yoga, he says, yeu keu triu kendreu ppakaya sryabhaumasaur tabanti na kacit kendre bhabati saumya graha tad sarpo nm yogo bhabiyati -that means if Sun, Saturn & Mars occupy then it is Sarpa Yoga (while other planets are not in kendras). Dr. P.S. Shastri has said the same in the Astrological magazine of June, 1994. So we can see rahu or ketu has got nothing to do with this ominous yoga viz., Sarpa Yoga. We can deduce that Kal Sarpa Yoga has no reference in classical texts, nor supported by any astrological texts, because Maharshi Parasar, Jaimini, Varahamihira, Ramanujacharya, Kalidas, Baidyanath Dixit, Benkateswar Daivajna, Mantreswar, Chuntiraj or famous astrologers didnt accept this yoga. Results of Rahu & Ketu It is generally considered that one having Kal sarpa Yoga will have a ruined life will devastating results, as all other planets start acting as malefics as they lose their potential to do good--- thus violating the basic rule as prescribed by Maharshi Parasara. In his book Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Maharshi Parasara has told us how to analyse the results of Rahu & Ketu-

yad yad bhvagato rhu ketuca janane nm| yad yad bhbeasayuktastat fala pradiedalam|| , Rahu & ketu will give results according to their houses they are placed & according to the conditions the lord of those houses that are placed in a given chart. If rahu & ketu, who do not have any power of their won to give results, then how the good results of planets placed between Rahu & Ketu will nullify does not have any reasonable answer. It is clear according to Maharshi Parasara, that Rahu & Ketu does not have anything of their own(as they are Nodes). So we cant agree that presence of all planets between Rahu & ketu will nullify all the good results of the planets placed, & results into Kal Sarpa Yoga. Without any doubt, Rahu & Ketu are natural malefics and in Brihat Parasara Hora sastra we find many yogas formed by Rahu & Ketu alongwith any other malefics, but no yogas are mentioned, which is formed by Rahu & Ketu. We know that a planets role (both as a benefic & a melefic) depends upon its nature, according to lordships, according to its position, according to combinations formed. As for Rahu & Ketu, they cant give results according to lorshipd, but they have a major role to play according to their placements. If Rahu & Ketu is posited in a benefics house or related to any benefic, then definitely it will give good results, which has been seen in many of the charts. Now let us discuss on Rahu & ketu according to various classical literatures. In Laghu Parasari, in 2nd Chapter, 8th sloka, it is clearly said that if Rahu or Ketu are posited in Kendras or Trikonas & if they are related to lords of Kendras or Trikonas, then they become Rajyogakaraks. As you know, malefics if occupy Upachayas(3,6,10,11 houses from Lagna) then they give good results. So if Rahu & Ketu occupies the above said houses, no doubt they will give good results. In Manasagari Paddhati, a very similar sloka is very appropriate in the current context of discussion. In that very text, presence of Rahu in Vrishabh, Kark, Simha & in Kanya have been eulogised & it is said that Rahu acts as a Rajyoga karaka. The results have been seen in many natives life, where Rahu is posted in any of the above signs of zodiac. In Bhavarthratnakar by Shree Ramanujacharya, we find that presence of Rahu in 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th, & in Kendras & konas & presence of ketu in 3rd bhava is considered to be auspicious & there it is said that Rahu & ketu in their own dasas will give results of similar to rajyoga (9th Chapter, Sloka-3-4). In the same text, Shree Ramanujacharya has considered Rahu to be a Rajyoga Karak, even if he occupies the 7th bhava.

As said earlier in the same text viz., Laghu Parasari it is said that Rahu & ketu if occupies the kendras & konas & even if they are not related to kendra or trikona lords, still in their own antar dasas will give results similar to Raj Yogas (chapter 4, sloka 8). While discussing about Rahu bhukti under Rahu dasa, Maharshi Parasar says in his book that it is always auspicious to have Rahu in Kark, Dhanush, Kanya or Brischik (chapter 41 sloka 1) & in Shani Dasa Rahu Bhukti, he says that it is auspicious to have Rahu in Mesh, Brishabh, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Dhanush or in Meen (chapter 43 sloka 67). As you all know that Sarbarth Chintamani is a good reference while analysing dasa results. In the same text the dasa results of rahu has been said to be good, provided it is posted in Mesh, Brishabh, Karkata, Kanya, Dhanu or in Meen (chapter 16, sloka 21 & 22). According to Phaladeepika dasa of Rahu is good when it is posted in signs like Kanya, Brischik or Meen (chapter 19, sloka 16).

Moreover according to Maharshi Parasara, one should predict about ones wealth from the position of Rahu (chapter 14 sloka 19). It is expected from a learner of Jyotish to know that a well-placed Rahu in his dasa gives wealth. While speaking about the dasa results of Rahu when it is well placed, he says- All are beneficial for the native, be it regarding to Kingdom, begetting son, money, wealth, vehicles, construction of new home, patronised by the king etc. (chapter 36 sloka 42,4649). Both Parasara & Jaimini are of the opinion that when Ketu is auspiciously placed it might result into Moksha. All these above said conditions are stated to prove that Rahu & Ketu are not always inauspicious & not at all responsible to minimise all the good effects of planets posted between them. So, Kal Sarpa Yoga is not established by the astrological writings & none of the classics mention about it.

Predicting ones future using this Yoga Many of the Astrologers, who all believe this Yoga, tries to prove their prediction while using his yoga & if those natives have experienced anything ominous, then they state that Kal Sarpa Yoga is responsible for such ill effects. If one yoga is enough to nullify all good results & if ones relies upon a single yoga, then there is no point in talking about such yoga which is irrelevent.

All the charts published in the Astrological Magazine regarding Kal Sarpa Yoga, was gone through by another learned astrologer & in the same Magazine, he said that all the ill results caused to those concerned persons are not due to Kal Sarpa Yoga, but due to the presence of planets in inauspicious places. Some examples Still, we are ready to accept such yoga, which is not supported by any classics. But for general belief, we need to give examples for proving what we decide, as we do in Science & in Arts. It is generally considered that one having Kal Sarpa Yoga suffers throughout his life, while Ardha Kal Sarpa Yoga is much more poisonous than Purna Kal Sarpa Yoga. Is it relevent to the present situation?? Or is it possible?? But we are surprised to find horoscopes of many famous personalities who had Kal Sarpa Yoga according to the present astrologers, still they had no problem in achieving success. Some example of Purna Kal Sarpa yoga:1) Shree Shree Mahaprabhu Chaitanyadev- Simha Lagna, Moon & Ketu in Lagna, Sun, Mercury, Venus & Rahu in 7th, rest of the planets between Rahu & Ketu. 2) Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru- Karkata lagna, Rahu in 12th, Jupiter with Ketu in 6th, rest of the planets between Rahu & Ketu. 3) Scientist Dr. K.S. Krishnan- Mesh Lagna, Mercury & Rahu in 9th, Ketu in 3rd, rest of the planets between rahu & Ketu. There are plenty of examples but I dont want it to be unnecessarily large, so have refrained from giving more examples of Purna Kal Sarpa Yoga. Now, some examples of Ardha Kal Sarpa yoga or Bhanga Kal Sarpa Yoga: 1) Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi- Except Jupiter, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu. 2) Author of the book Bande Mataram Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay- Except Saturn, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu. 3) Adi Shankaracharya- Except Saturn, all are between Rahu & Ketu.

4) Swami Ramanujacharya- Except Jupiter, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu. 5) Singer Hemanta Mukhopadhayay (better known as Hemant Kumar)- Except Mars, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu. The list is endless.

Conclusion Thus we can deduce, that Kal Sarpa Yoga is nothing but a cultivated yoga, only to scare people who come to seek astrological advice. As the examples given above it is true that whatever incomplete they felt in their life, was due to planetary position, not due to the so called Kal Sarpa Yoga. I have a number of horoscopes where there is presence of Kal Sarpa Yoga, but those persons have felt the height of success in their life, but inclusion of those examples will unnecessarily make this work pretty large. I have tried my best to support my article with relevent sources. Please forgive the shortcomings, if any. I am dedicating this article to my dear lord Shree Salagram Sila rupi Shree NarasimhaNarayanji.

As i follow your rules to check KSY and KAY but here he stated that she has KAY even when planets where there with ketu I would like to have your comment to on this chart Regards Swapnil Dear Swapnil see the highlighted points. This what visti is talking about.

1) Start from Rahu 2) Traverse the chart in the zodiacal direction. 3.a) If you encounter a planet other than ketu, this means that

this planet is being "swallowed up" by Rahu in its progression - again indicating Kala Sarpa yogam. 3.b) If the first planet you encounter is Ketu, and then you encounter the other planets, this means that Ketu is "swallowing up" the other planets in its movement, i.e. the desire for Moksha is comsuming the indications of all other planets, and the native will eventually reach Moksha. This is Kal Regards J.s.sandhu

Dear Sandhu Ji, Pranams. Some clarifications please on the following. First of all, check the following conditions. 1) All planets between Rahu and Ketu 2) No planet is with Rahu

3) No planet is with Ketu 4) No planet in the Lagna 5) No planet in the 7th house If any of the conditions above are not met, the chart does not have either KSY or KAY. (Kal sarp Yoga, Kal amrita yoga) As per 1) --------If all the planets,I understand, including the Lagna fall between Rahu & Ketu on either side(east or west),it is either KSY or KAY,depending on the respective positions of Ra & Ke. I think it is ok. As per 2)& 3) -------------If there are planets either with Rahu or with Ketu, it causes KSY or KAY. Does it cause so even if Ra & Ke do not form the head and tail by their longitude even if some planets are with them? As per 4) -------------If some planets in Lagna but all other planets minus lagna fall between Ra & Ke,Does it not result in any yoga? If some planets in Lagna but all planets including the Lagna fall between Ra & Ke,does it not cause in any yoga? As per 5) -----------If some planets in 7th but all other planets minus 7th fall between Ra & Ke,Does it not result in any yoga? If some planets in 7th but all fall between Ra & Ke,Does it not result in any yoga? Given below Four cases --1.A girl born on 30-8-1977 at 7-04 hrs at Chennai has Moon in 7th,Sun&Mer(r) in Lagna but except 7th all others fall between Rahu in Virgo and Ketu in Pisces. Some are of the view that this girl is not affected by any yoga. But here I find with due respect to KSY & KAY the dual effect.

2.A lady born on 29-6-1941 at 7-56 hrs at Kumbakonam(79:E:21/ 10:N:57) has Ketu with Mars in Pisces (Mars & Ketu in Longi 5-08 & 3-38 respectively) while Rahu alone in Virgo, showing all the palenets including LAGNA Which has VENUS in it between Ra & Ke. Can we conclude that this woman has KSY or no KSY because Lagna has a planet?. 3.A boy born on 11-6-1978 at 11-35 hrs at Kancheepuram(79:E:45/12:N:05) has Ketu in Pisces and Rahu in Virgo and all the planets within them including Lagna which has in it two planets,Mars&Sat.This boy is doing well somewhere abroad and got married recently. Does he has a KSY? 4.A person born 26-9-1940 at 5-00hrs at Chennai has Ketu in Pisces and Rahu in Virgo with Mars,Sun &Mercury (Rahu:18:16,Mars:00:47,Sun:09:42,Mer:25:47),indicating all fall between Mercury & Ketu, but three planets with Rahu & no planets in Lagna. How to decide on this? In my humble view majority of charts may have the combination of KSY and KAY,if not KSY or KAY alone. Can I have your guidance? Please correct,if my understanding has gone astray. Regards, Anusha Reply With Quote 18. 04-07-2009, 12:00 PM #38 sandhu.jp

Following the criteria of identifying KSY / KAY as advised by Sandhuji, in your chart condition No. 4 is not fulfilled - so no KSY / KAY. If this criteria is not taken into account, then it is KSY (moving zodiacally, Ketu is the first planet after Rahu). regards Originally Posted by sandhu.jp Dear all A simple analysis to identify the same.
