● Types of Enclosures

○ enclosed
○ ported – the port acts as a resonator
○ page 21 for full list of advantages and disadvantages
○ for my project I believe that I will be going with an enclosed box at this time
● Speaker Box Construction
○ make no internal dimension 3 times as big as all the others
○ See table on page 25 for what size dimensions to make my box
○ always put high frequency speakers above low frequency ones
○ felt or foam should be glued to the speaker board around the drivers to reduce diffraction
(page 33)
○ use particle board or plywood
○ make sure the box is airtight and rattle free
○ use damping material, unless you have a ported box
■ put damping material on every interior wall except the one on which the speaker is
○ see page 40 for pictures of how to mount my speakers – I like the flush mount
● Closed Box Speaker Systems
○ volume depends on air resonance frequency, resonance magnification, and the speaker's
compliance
■ with these you can predict the frequency of the closed box system resonance, the
speaker's resonance magnification in the closed box, and the frequency at which the bass
response is down 3dB called the cut-off freq.
● Ported Box Speaker Systems
○ the size and angle of the port allows you to tune the bass coming from your box
○ you can change the cut-off frequencies

● Crossover Networks
○ For my speakers I'm going to use a second order parallel circuit to power my woofer and
 tweeters
○ my crossovers have lowpass filters and high pass filters
■ they were hand made and soldered and calibrated to perform @ perfection
● Choosing speakers
○ I chose 2 mid range speakers and 2 tweeters to cover all the frequencies that I want to hear
while listening
○ I went with the 4 inch diameter cones based on the size of a typical room that I will be using
them in
○ For wire, I'm using regular + and – speaker wire hooked up to a rear terminal
● Testing speakers
○ Like the book recommends, I will test my speakers using a decibel meter at different
frequencies
