4. Planning Thought Processes Context of Exploration This activity will take place in small groups at tables. Rationale This activity was chosen to support interpersonal learners and to assess the ability to work cooperatively with others. The specific activity was chosen based on the current ocean theme the children have shown an interest in (they especially like exploring the ocean animals. Anticipating challenges The children may want to cut out animals they like that are not ocean animals (even though most of them at apple tree have demonstrated they know the difference between ocean and land animals). If this is a challenge I will offer them another poster board to put the land animals on to create another collage. 5. Materials National Geographic Kids magazines (because that is what I have) Other magazines donated by families and co-workers

Scissors Glue Poster boards Trashcan (for scraps) 6. Activity Procedure A. Motivation/Introduction Remember when we sorted and classified animals by land or sea, well I have magazines for you to look through and cut out pictures of sea life and animals and we are going to work together in groups to make a seal life collage . B. Concept exploration - We will do this activity in small groups at tables - I will lay out magazines, scissors, glue and the posterboard on each table - The children will choose their pictures and cut them out then glue them on the poster board, working together to cover the poster board. C. Inquiry (Open Ended Questions) - What animals live in the ocean? - What animals live on the land? - What other things are found in the ocean that you could add to the poster? D. Closure - So what are some of the animals you found to put on your poster? - What do these animals have in common? - What other kinds of animal collages could we make? E. Assessment - The activity will be complete when the children have finished their collages to their liking. - I will document their ability to work together with anecdotal notes and photos of their posters. - If further exploration of these materials is desired we can make collages of different kinds of animals, animals from different habitats and label them. We can make a diorama or 3D art of animals in their environments. - We can explore plastic animals, look at books or photos of animals and their habitats. Extension Ideas - We can explore plastic animals, look at books or photos of animals and their habitats.
