Multiple Intelligences Unit Plan Template EDUC 526 Unit Title: Learning About Atoms Grade Level: Third

Grade Subject: Science Objectives: 1.The students will list down the things they see around them to make them realize that everything they see is made up of atoms. The students will examine their lists and as a group classify the items in their lists according to the three states of matter. 2.The students will be integrating new information into their thought processes by watching a YouTube video about the atom. Moreover, the students will be able to learn facts about the atom and will be able to identify its parts. 3.The students will be listing down significant concepts learned thus far, about the atom and make a wordle project. 4.The students will be solving for the protons, electrons, neutrons and atomic mass number of elements. The students will make an outline of the steps they used in solving for the protons, electrons, neutrons and atomic mass number using a Intelligences: Naturalist, Visual, Logical, Kinesthetic, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal. Time Frame: 3 Weeks Technologies: Notability, Pages, Skitch, Word
Standards: Content Standards: Science forThird Grade 1e. Students know matter has three forms: solid, liquid, and gas. 1h. Students know all matter is made of small particles called atoms, too small to see with the naked eye. 1i. Students know people once thought that earth, wind, fire, and water were the basic elements that made up all matter. Science experiments show that there are more than 100 different types of atoms, which are presented on the periodic table of the elements.

Procedures: (Technology in Light Magenta) Week One Day 1: Alphabet List The students will be given the time to list down things that they see around them. They can list one item or object per letter of the alphabet. They will do this activity using Apps such as Notability and Skitch. They can also type their list in Pages or Word document. Day 2: What's the Matter? The students will be divided into groups. Each group will classify the things they have in their lists into three categories, which are the three states of matter, namely, solid, liquid or gas. This activity serves

Intelligences:

Interpersonal, Kinesthetic, Logical, Naturalist, Verbal,

as a review of matter and its three states. Each group can write their list in Apps such as Notability or Skitch, Pages or Word and submit it in Dropbox. Day 3: Introducing, the Atom! The students will watch a YouTube video entitled Making Molecules with Atoms at http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=qmgE0w6E6ZI. This video explains what atoms are and introduces the periodic table as well. The whole class can watch it together, using one computer or an ipad that is connected to the projector. A website (http://education.jlab.org/atomtour/)that has facts on atoms will also be shown. Day 4: Online Quiz and Worksheet Day The students will access the internet with the use of computers or ipads to work on a quiz about atoms. The quiz can be found at http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/quizzes/atom.html. The students will be able to check the answers on their own as they scroll down the page. They will also access a worksheet in our class blog at http://christinaschronicles.weebly.com. They will be required to label the parts of the atom in this worksheet. The students can submit their work in Dropbox. Each student can turn to his/her shoulder partner to compare their work. Day 5: Wordle Day The students will list down at least ten sentences of significant concepts that they learned about the atom in Apps such as Notability, Skitch or in Pages or Word document. They will access http://www.wordle.net to paste their list and be able to create a wordle project. Examples of wordles will be shown to the students. Week 2 Day 1: Let Us Solve!

The students will learn how to solve for the protons, electrons, Intrapersonal, neutrons and the atomic mass number of elements by going to this Kinesthetic, Logical, website: http://education.jlab.org/qa/pen_number.html. After this, they Verbal, Visual will be playing an interactive math game at http://education.jlab.org/elementmath/index.htmlthat will require them to add, subtract or round off numbers to practice what they have learned. The students can immediately check their answers in the game. Day 2: Let Us Text! The students will be divided into groups of threes. They will make an outline of the steps that they used in solving for the protons, neutrons, electrons and atomic mass number of the elements. They will publish this outline using a text generator at http://www.fodey.com. Examples will be shown on how to use this. Day 3: Let Us Watch! The students will be learning more about the elements and the Periodic Table today. They will be watching a YouTube video about Mendeleev and the Periodic Table at http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=fPnwBITSmgU This will give them an idea how the elements and the periodic table Logical, Musical, Verbal, Visual Interpersonal, Kinesthetic, Logical, Naturalist, Verbal, Visual

came about. They will also watch a short rhyme and a song about the elements at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33SGTnx2FlE and at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F6DtNK87uk&list=PL2xDxvCMVZsTyWzOO-g7ApAizHEeJsbK. These videos could also be accessed at our class blog at christinaschronicles.weebly.com. The computer or the ipad connected to the projector will be used for this activity. Day 4: Let Us Plan!(Create-a- PeriodicTable) The students will be assigned into groups to construct a replica of the Periodic Table. Each group will be working on a portion of the periodic table using a certain theme. Themes could be Flowers, Fish, Birds, Animals or Cartoon Characters. Each element will have a corresponding picture according to the theme. The students will be given sufficient time to brainstorm, sketch their plans and do their research for this project. They can use apps such as Notability or Skitch to draw their plans and access the internet for their pictures. Day 5: Let's Volt In! (Create-a-Periodic Table) Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Kinesthetic, Logical, Naturalist, Verbal, Visual

Interpersonal, The students will continue working on their projects. Each group Kinesthetic, Logical, will be given a copy of the real Periodic Table to serve as a guide for Naturalist, Verbal, their projects. They will be allowed to draw, color, cut out pictures from Visual magazines or download pictures from the internet. Each group will be posting their work on the wall to complete a class periodic table. Week 3 Day 1: What's Up? Each group will have two representatives to report or give their positive feedback on another group's Create-a -Periodic Table project. The students will be recording this in an app called Talking Tom and Ben News. This will require use of the ipad and the projector for everyone to see. Day 2: Who's Singing? The students will be divided into groups and will be composing their own song or will be writing lyrics to a familiar song, jingle or melody. Content should have something to do with the knowledge gained about the atoms, elements or the periodic table. They will be recording this in Garageband or Songify using their computers, ipads or mobile phones. Day 3: Who's Working? The students will access the internet for the Build-a-Word Worksheet and CrossWord Puzzle about the elements and the periodic table at http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/downloads/ed_03SSBuildaWord.pdf. The students will be forming words out of the letters of the elements in the Build-a-Word Worksheet. They can turn in their finished products in Dropbox. Day 4: Who's Coming? The students will be having a Virtual Field Trip to an exhibit of elements and Periodic Tables at Dublin, Ireland. This will require a Intrapersonal, Kinesthetic, Logical, Naturalist, Verbal, Visual Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Kinesthetic, Logical, Musical, Verbal Interpersonal, Kinesthetic, Logical, Verbal, Visual

computer or an ipad connected to the projector. After the field trip, the students will be creating an audio podcast of what they learned from the experience, and what their favorite part is from the exhibit. They can record this and include music in it using Audioboo or Garageband. Day 5: Who's Presenting? The students will be presenting their recorded songs and their audio podcasts today. They will also be explaining their Create-a-Periodic Table Project. Their presentation can be recorded using an ipad or a mobile phone and can be posted in our class blog, for the parents to see.
