Advisory Lesson Plan Ashley Kantor, Elliot Gluck, Vidaur Durazo Title: Gun Violence Affects More People

Than We Think Objective: SWBAT identify the prevalence of gun violence in Chicago SWBAT define psychological trauma/PTSD SWBAT role play various scenarios and respond to these situations SWBAT evaluate and critique their peers portrayals Appropriate Grade Level: 8th Grade Timeframe: 3-45 minute classes Materials Needed: Projector, computer, handouts Lesson Procedures: Begin with initial reflection, Powerpoint Slides for the rest of the presentation 1. Do Now: (15 minutes) Show Video Trailer: Shell Shocked, Documentary on Urban Gun Violence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBePnhrg5DE (3 minutes) Reflect in writing on an experience in which you, a loved one, or someone you know was involved in an act of gun violence and elaborate on how this impacted them psychologically and physically. (7 minutes) Students can share out their experiences to the class (5 minutes) 2. Introduce Prevalence of Gun Violence/ Chicago Statistics (30 min) Take poll for students to predict Chicago rates:

What percentage of teens say they can get a handgun if they wanted to? 44% Percentage of homicide victims between ages 13-19? 29% Student victims of shooting who are male? 91% Student shooting victims who are African-American? 80%

Teacher will share actual statistics in rates out of 10, using student groups to physically show this data (students will stand or sit to show the statistics that go along with gun violence in Chicago)

Students will compare predictions with actual data and discuss their reactions in small groups

3. Introduce Definition for PTSD/ Psychological Trauma (15) Show video clip of soldier showing signs of PTSD (Hurt Locker, Rambo, Taxi Driver, Brothers, etc.) 5 minutes Read one article separated into parts for groups about PTSD in youth and have students share what they learned (the signs and symptoms, triggers, etc.) (10 minutes) 4. Explain the Connection Between PTSD/Psychological Trauma and Gun Violence (20) Discuss statistic that 35% of urban youth exposed to community violence are likely to develop PTSD (Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, 2013 p.1)--relate to discussion from Day 1 about who has witnessed gun violence, and what 35% of that number of students would be (8 minutes) Discuss and create an awareness-raising poster of what each scenario might look like for the 3 modes of youth exposure to gun violence: as victim, as witness, and hearing about it in the community under the theme: Have you been affected by gun violence? (12 minutes) 5. Analyze what may happen to gun violence victims whose psychological effects are not treated (10 minutes) What effects can this have on school performance, personal relationships, and long-term happiness? Students will independently create a cause and effect chart for what may happen to untreated victims, and then teacher will share statistics of what could happen (% who drop out of school, etc.) 6. Identify possible resources available for patients with PTSD/Psychological Trauma (10) How to identify if students need support for psychological/PTSD induced by gun violence Brief Discussion of resources for supporting those impacted by gun violence trauma CBITS (Cognitive- Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools) Community Centers/Programs

7. Planning time and performance of skit focused recognizing symptoms of PTSD and supporting those affected by gun violence (25) 3 separate modes of youth exposure to violence will be portrayed

Students will evaluate their peers performance and give feedback on their effectiveness-what would they do differently? Was it realistic?

8. Exit Slip on Gun Violence & PTSD/Psychological Trauma (10) Q: First, identify the prevalence of gun violence in Chicago. What is the definition of PTSD/psychological trauma? How are PTSD/psychological trauma and gun violence related? What are some signs that someone dealing with exposure to gun violence may show? How can you support gun violence victims who are experiencing these symptoms?
