RAIL GUN

It is not a Rail Gun but it is a
Rail Road Gun
So What is
Rail Gun
What is Rail Gun?
A Rail Gun uses the flow of electricity to
accelerate a projectile to incredibly high
velocities.
 It is distinct from other guns by the fact that
no chemical combustion is necessary.
 In fact, no gasses are used to accelerate the
projectile. All the acceleration is done by the
flow of electricity.
Main Parts of Rail Gun

 The power Source

 The rails

 The Projectile
How Rail Gun Works?
A Rail Gun consists of two parallel
conductors, the "rails," bridged by a
conducting projectile.
 The Rail Gun is fired by creating a current
loop that flows from large power source,
down one rail, across the projectile, and back
up the other rail.
 Current loop induces an enormous magnetic
field which pushes the projectile down the
rails with a force.
How Rail Gun Works?
How fast does a rail gun
projectile go?

 Tilldate, Rail Guns can easily fire a projectile

at over velocities of 10 kilometers per second
 Velocities of approximately 150 kilometers
per second are considered possible.
 By comparison, the maximum velocity that a
light gas gun has fired a projectile is less than
8 kilometers per second.
Rail Gun: Hot Facts
A test demonstrated that a rail gun
projectile's kinetic energy could create a 10-
foot diameter crater, 10 feet deep in solid
ground, and achieve projectile penetration to
40 feet - 3 to 5 times more effective than
current guns.
 Rail gun projectiles are smaller and easier to
store: a standard AGS magazine holds 1,500
rounds; a rail gun magazine could hold
10,000 rounds in the same amount of
space.
Problems with Rail Guns
 Power supply
 Resistive heating

 Melting

 Repulsion
Rail Gun Applications
 Military Applications:
 Batleships, tanks, and handguns
 Star Wars
 Asteroids
 Peaceful Applications:
 Magnetic Trains
 Space Exploration
