Suarez is top Spurs target

Tottenham are already making arrangments on how to spend the revenue generated from the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid Duncan Castles, The Sunday Times Published: 4 August 2013 TOTTENHAM are considering a bid for unsettled Liverpool striker Luis Suarez and Colombia international Jackson Martinez as they plan to reinvest the income from Gareth Bales pending transfer to Real Madrid. Andre Villas-Boas is also seeking reinforcememts in defence and on the wing to mitigate the world-record sale. Tottenhams manager has taken a pragmatic stance following Madrids proposal to meet his chairmans 87m asking price for the Wales international. In addition to the purchase of Spain centre-forward Roberto Soldado, he has asked for a second international-class finisher. With Liverpool refusing to honour a 40m clause in Suarezs contract by permitting him to talk to Arsenal, the Uruguayan is likely to prove beyond Tottenhams reach. The White Hart Lane club are not in a position to offer the Champions League football Suarez has cited as a reason for quitting Anfield, and Madrid are also interested.

Martinez, 26, is more attainable regardless of a spectacular first season in Europe in which he scored 26 times in 30 Portuguese league appearances. An inquiry has been placed with FC Porto, who say they will not sell for less than his contracts 34.7m release clause. Tottenham also retain an interest in France forward Loic Remy, who has been made available by relegated Queens Park Rangers. To add creativity to their attack, Tottenham are pursuing young Argentina international Erik Lamela. The 21-year-old has been a regular for AS Roma since being brought to Italy by Franco Baldini, now Tottenhams technical director. In defence, Spurs have entered talks with Porto over Rolando, the Portugal central defender. Madrid have offered left-back Fabio Coentrao in part exchange for Bale. While negotiations are required over his valuation and salary demands, Villas-Boas regards the Portugal international as a good solution to a problem position in his squad and the player is open to a move to the Premier League.
