H.W: 1 worksheet Tuesday 1. worksheet 1.2e 2. Illustrate mental addition of 2-dgit numbers. Write the expression 36 + 45 ib tge board and display two corresponding sets of number discs. Discuss methods to add these two numbers mentally: 1) Find each digit from right to left 2) Find the ones. (see Teachers Guide 2B) Find an intermediate number 1) Add the tens of the second number to the first number to get the intermediate sum. 2) Add the ones to get the final sum. Example: 36

H.W: 1 workbook p.11-12 and 15 Wednesday 1. Class worksheet 1.2 g 2. Illustrate addition of 98 and 99 to a 2-digit number. Use displayable base-10 blocks. Write the expression 98 + 23 on the board. (see Teachers guide) Replace the 98-grid with a full- 10x10grid. Ask how many more we would get if we added 100 instead of 98. There would be 2 too many. So we could get the same answer by adding 100 and then taking away 2. 3. Illustrate addition of 98 and 99 to a 3-digit number. Write the expression 121 + 98 on the board. Illustrate with base-10 blocks, using the one with 2 squares removed or covered. Discuss strategies for solving this problem mentally. Students can either make 100 with 98 by taking 2 from 121, or add 100 to 121 and then subtract 2. H.W 1 worksheet Thursday 1. Class worksheet 1.2h & Activity 2. Materials for each group of about 4 students: One number cubes labeled with 0-5, one labeled with 5-9, and one labeled 0,2,3,5,7,8 and one labeled with two each 99, 98, and 97. Procedures: Please see Teachers guide (page 22, on the bottom) H.W: p16-17 Friday 1. Class worksheet 1.3 a

2. Illustrate mental subtraction of ones from a 2-digit number when renaming occurs. Use number discs. Displat 5 tens and 4 ones. Tell students you want to subtract 8. Write the expression 54-8 and discuss strategies to mentally find its value. Two ways: 54 8 = 40 + 6 =46 40 14 Or

54 8 = 44 + 2 =46 44 10

3. See Teachers guide for more examples (page 26) H.W 1 worksheet & workbook p.10 Differentiation: Linguistic intelligence ("word smart"): Math sentences Logical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart"): Math concept Spatial intelligence ("picture smart"): reading the scales. Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart"): hand on measuring game Interpersonal intelligence ("people smart"): working with their classmates Intrapersonal intelligence ("self smart"): classroom worksheet Assessment: Worksheet and homework will be the formal assessment. Teachers observation and students interaction with the teacher and the classmates will be the informal assessment.
