Phonetics

Part the Second

We now have some ways to describe sounds 1. Manner of articulation 2. Place of articulation 3. Voicing

How do we describe vowels?

1. Manner of articulation? Not really a fricative, and they would all be the same anyway. 2. Place of articulation? None. 3. Voicing? Would all be voiced. This is not very effective.

So, how do we describe vowels?

Highness and frontness Front High (Close) Mid Low (Open) i e o Mid Back u

Questions?
How is different from ?

How is different from ?

University of Iowa has developed a good visual.

How else do we produce vowels?

1. Make the [i] sounds 2. Round your lips Now its different. This sound denoted [y] and is used in French, Scottish English, and Turkish.

But [i] and [y] are both high front vowels. Whats different?
Vowels can be rounded or unrounded [i] is unrounded, [y] is rounded In American English, only high and mid back vowels ([u], [], [o], and []) are rounded, but this isnt the case across all languages.

Vowels can also be tense or lax

Tense vowels are on the outskirts of articulation. Lax vowels in the mid-ground of articulation. In English, [i] and [u] are tense, everything else is lax.

When analyzing English vowels, we end up with something like this:

Where are [o] and [e]?

In American English, [o] and [e] are usually pronounced as diphthongs. Diphthongs are two vowels pronounced consecutively. [o][o] [e][e]
